Root Help! Update Android 2.1 for Freedompop

Forgot to try Unrevoked a second time. Duh!

This time it worked, yeahh! Note to any newbs reading this. Be sure to try unrevoked a couple of times - it might save you a lot of faffing about. (I have also cleared temp internet files, installed and unistalled HTC Sync and shut computer down a few times in the process.)

Phone has booted into Clockwork 2.6 Recovery....

Sorry to be so stupid, but now I don't know how to transfer my Rom (Digital Karma v8) from the computer (Windows 7) to the SD card. I plug the phone in via USB cable, but I cant access the device or find any helpful advice online.

Do you still have the drivers installed on the computer?
Are you S-off now?
I would advise against ClockworkMod recovery...it can be glitchy when wiping before a rom. I would use AmonRa recovery;) I can link that in a second, but let's address your device not being recognized by the computer yes?

Can I assume your phone is fully booted up when you plug it in?

Hi Mike, thanks for pitching in. :) I think I've dumped all the driver folders, but I did load some drivers into the phone when I had HTC Sync on here as well as my attempt at the first part of HTC method. Yup, am still S-off.

Presumably I will need to uninstall Clockwork to load in Amon-RA?

In the meantime, I don't get what's going on with the phone. It is fully booted (on normally) when I plug it in but no icon appears on the desktop/in Computer or as an additional D or E drive. I can look at it in devices but that only seems to show me properties and such like....

Well, if you have htc sync on the computer, you should have the drivers installed.
Try this...uninstall HTC sync, but leave the drivers on the computer.
Reboot the computer.

You said the phone does NOT show up as a drive letter at all?

When you plug the phone into the computer, can you pull the notification bar down (on your phone) and choose to mount as usb storage?

As far as switching recoveries, no need to try to uninstall the old one....the new recovery will overwrite the old one. (you'll also need to make a new nandroid when you install AmonRa.....I don't think AmonRa will recognize backups made with Clockworkmod)

Sorry Mike, fell asleep before you posted this (baby in the house!) Have restored android folder (contains adb, adb dll and fastboot) and android-USB-Driver folder from recycle that I made following start of HTC method.

Think I have reinstalled the HTC Sync Drivers but not clear how to separate these from the exe. Anyway, plugged in phone which said it had updated drivers, but still doesn't show up as icon or drive letter.

In settings>SD& Phone Storage, there is only an option to Unmount SD Card. I assume this means that phone is already mounted. The other option, which I did pre-rooting, is to format the SD card. In Applications>Development, the phone is set to debug Mode when USB is connected, which perhaps might affect this?

Not sure what the notification bar is, tbh. If I pull down the bar at the top of the home screen it just gives me voicemail and email messages, not software/app options.

Oh, a baby in da hows!!! :) I remember those days :D

Hmmm, well I would think the drivers are installed on the computer then.
Have you tried a different cord or usb port?

The other thing you can try to see if the computer recognizes the device, is this...
Before plugging the phone into the computer, open up your device manager.
Then plug the phone in.
If something in the device manager pops up, even if it is not recognized, (an icon with a yellow triangle), then we know the computer sees something.....then we can go from there.

Forgot to check for baby sick in the ports :D

Different ports don't seem to make a difference however, when I plug phone in with Device Manager open, Android USB Devices pops up, with a sub-folder My HTC

I'm grasping at straws here, but it won't hurt to try this:(
Right click on the Android USB devices, and choose the option to update driver > browse my computer for driver software, then choose "browse" to MY HTC where you have the drivers listed and choose the driver.???

Right clicking just gives me "scan for hardware changes," which doesn't seem to do anything.

Going into My HTC Properties I have tried what you suggested on the "update driver" button, but no joy.

I reinstalled and updated HTC Sync to be sure I have latest drivers, and there was some interference from the adb app (which I has to stop in Task Manager). Perhaps this is the problem?

Can you tell me what drivers I need or what I should be trying to do with this?

Appreciate your efforts here :)

No problem...I'm trying :o

I'm starting to wonder if there is anything else trying to connect to your device, therefore not allowing your device to be seen.
Go to your Control Panel--->Programs and Features--->HTC Sync. Uninstall it. You should see your drivers listed in there too---leave those.
Anything else listed that might want to communicate with the phone either disable or remove.
Do you have a different cord you could try? I know you said you already tried different ports.
(although thinking here....your computer was able to communicate with the device via adb before, correct?)

Have found that HTC Sync cannot find the phone either. Uninstalled and kept the two driver programs.

Tried a different cord with no better results, but I have no idea if either is incapable of carrying data.

Yes computer must have communicated with phone down my cable to install Clockwork recovery and run unrevoked.

What kind of program might try to communicate with the phone? This is not my computer....

Programs like PDAnet or the like from what I've heard.

Is this computer the same one you used to root with?

Do you have access to another computer to test on?

Did the computer recognize the device as a drive letter before the whole rooting process?

Do I ask too many questions? :p

Ok, no PDAnet. As the computer is not mine I do not know what many of the programs are for.

This is the same one I did the rooting on, yes. Difficult to try on another...am new in town. No, the device was not recognized as a drive letter prior to rooting AFAIK

You might ask too many questions but not in this thread: fire away :D

Am thinking of using half my data and trying to download the ROM straight to phone. I still haven't even checked out Freedompop yet, lol!

OK well something has happened with that fix. Phone has moved from main list in Device Manager to sub-folder of "Disc drives"> "HTC Android Phone USB Device"

It has added two tabs to General, Driver and Details...Policies and Volumes.

Am feeling hopeful...:D

Mike, if you stop by would you please link me to the version of Amon-Ra you think I should run with. I have Supersonic EVT2-2

May as well try to get everything as good as I can....:)

Stand by. I'm not by a computer k?

Edit: This should be akin to how you installed your current recovery?
via the fastboot method?
Fastboot method
1.download amon ra 2.3 from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.extract the file and then go into and move recovery.img file into the android folder you created when unlocking your bootloader.
3.on your phone after you have unlocked your phone you should be in the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7)
6.enter command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
congrats!!!!!! you have just installed amon ra 2.3

Taken from our resident robots guide here --I know that is not the guide you followed, but installing recovery via the fastboot method is the easiest imo.
There is also other methods to install a new recovery too but....
