Help Help with 2 email apps

Hi,
please can someone help, i changed my phone over to use Microsoft exchange server for my gmail & everything seemed ok, i could send & receive and delete messages, the problem came about when i opened up my outlook 2010 and all the messages that i had deleted came flooding back in to my inbox!! i know that i set outlook up to use pop3 but how do i stop this from happening?, really want to stick with exchange server as it pushes the email through so much faster.

Thanks

Pete

If you want to make sure that when you delete an email from your phone it does not appear on your desktop, go into the email settings and make sure you have the option selected that deletes emails on the server too.

You might also want to activate the option that gives your phone priority over the server. (these options can be found under your email account settings on your phone).

Using iCloud for email has always required iMAP.

Is there a way to get it working with PUSH? Anyone here doing that?

I realize there are probably few Mac users with Android phones here (But it keeps growing)

Im a mac user..

what exactly are you trying to do? I have a gmail account and all i did was set it up using exchange server settings (just like i did on my iphone) and it works perfectly with push. Synchronises all the folders, calendars, contacts, etc :)

Yes, but on my Mac I use Apple Mail.

I have folders created in Apple Mail that need to be brought over and kept in sync.

That cannot be done through GMAIL.

So, though my mail originates on GMAIL, it is forwarded to my MAC account (to filter out spam) and that is the account I need to set up on the phone.

Is there a way to do that and have immediate push instead of iMAP which has a minimal 5-minute update rate?

Thanks

Have you tried setting it up as an exchange server?

trying setting it up as exchange server using these settings:
1. Open @email app on phone
2. press menu > + Add Account
3. Type in your email, " username@me.com ", and password
4. Click Manual Setup > Click Exchange account
5. type exactly in IMAP, " p08-imap.mail.me.com "
6. Security type " SSL " > Click next
7. type exactly in SMTP, " smtp.me.com " > Security type "none" > Click next
Done!

This process should also work if you have a @mac.com just change the imap p08-imap.mail.mac.com and smtp.mac.com

Capuman,

Don't have the Note II yet (AT&T releases on November 9) but let me try to set it up with the Samsung Mail App on my Galaxy S3.

Thank you for the help. Will be back if I have any additional questions.

Hi
Can you explain further, i can see the option to give the phone priority over the server, but cant see the option to delete emails on server at all in the samsung email app :(

Pete

Hi peter7769,

You wont see that option if you set up the email as exchange since exchange settings will automatically synch all your mail and folders on all devices.

I synch all my folders on the phone, and when i delete an email if i go into my mail client on the computer i dont see that email.

If you have setup the account using the exchange server settings, then this should synch everything properly meaning what ever you do on one device will be reflected in the other automatically.

If you use another method (i.e. pop) then this might not happen and thats when you can set the emails to be deleted on the server as well as the device.

Thanks for clearing that up capuman, i will give it another try when i get home tonight :)

No worries dude, thats what we are here for :)

I just wish i knew how to change the colour scheme of the email app though! really hate the black background with light text..wish i could invert that... :(

LOL, im the opposite, thats why i use the samsung app not gamil as i dont like the white background ;)

I prefer the samsung app as you cant change the theme for gmail (i like a dark theme) but wish i could set the sync better on samsung, i would like it to poll every minute not every 5 but thats the lowest it will go.

Pete

I cant figure out how to change the Samsung app to the dark theme. I don't see it in settings or anywhere else? Help.
Neve rmind....didn't realize "general preference" was clickable.

OK.....that wasn't it either. Nothing there to change to dark.

I have only had my note2 for 6 days (ex apple4 user) but hate, hate, hate that black background with grey or is it boring beige type face.
Please help me change it, without changing from the native Samsung email.
Anyone?

If it's not dark you are not using the native Samsung app.

I don't think you can. I have the same issue with other apps (such as the Gmail app) where it is all bright white. It's OK for a large screen but I am happier with light on dark for a small device. Saves a shed load of battery too.

Note true. On the Note 2, the Samsung app's default theme is light, not dark.

Not for me, or all the people complaining that it is dark. I wonder if there are 2 different versions. For me it looks just like it did on the Note. It Looked that way before and after the latest update (the one that added split screen).

I am in the UK but I don't know why they would write 2 separate themes.

I'll add a screenie in a bit. It would be good to see one of a light themed default app to avoid confusion as to whether we are talking about the same thing.

The GMail app is prettier to me and the Samsung app can't handle tags too well - it just wants to move an email to a folder. I use tags a lot in Gmail. Also, the samsung app doesn't handle syncing of those folders/tags well either.

However, I do like the ability to zoom and the hover feature is cool...

OK, here's what the Samsung default mail app has always looked like for me. Remarkably similar to the stock android mail apps I have seen on HTC and others:

With push you should get the notification on your phone around the same time it appears in your web interface. There may be a small delay depending on connection but you may even sometimes get the phone notification first.

Of course there is only one way to find out. If you already have an android phone that supports active sync with push in its native mail client then just test it.

Note that this is a battery killer as it's constantly checking for mail :)

I like to keep mine on an hourly basis that way I'm not distracted by email constantly.

I actually have every single one of mine on manual at all times. I like to choose when I read my mail.

The one exception is OhMyGodTheServersAtMyOfficeAreExploding@MyOwnDomain.com

That's at 15 minute intervals since an extra 10 minutes won't matter for minor issues and if they actually are exploding then I either won't get an email, if the mail or monitoring server goes first, or even with push I probably can't respond fast enough.

Isn't the Samsung app the white envelope with the red @ symbol on it?

Yes (icon is shown top left in my screenshot above), just called Email. I'd really be interested to see if anyone has it themed in different colours.

Of course if someone is using a 3rd party launcher there is nothing to stop that icon being applied to any other app.

This is what the stock email app looks like.
