Root Help with SetCPU app and general battery saving

mizm05

Newbie
Hey all,

So I just got an EVO now that the price dropped. Rooted it right out of the box with Revolutionary. Downloaded the recommended apps including Titanium Backup Pro, Lookout Premium, SetCPU, and Wireless Tether.

I'm running the latest Amon_RA ROM and have froze a bunch of bloatware with Titanium Backup. I never used the phone in it's stock state, so I don't really have a "control" group to compare to, but even with all these mods, my EVO didn't make it through a full day yesterday and I wasn't doing anything usage intensive that I normally don't do. I start my day at 6:30am and the phone made it to about 6:30pm...12 hours.

My understanding of rooting is to be able to tweak the phone to last longer and perform better. 12 hours of battery life isn't great in my opinion. I didn't even make any phone calls yesterday.

Anyways, I downloaded the latest market version of SetCPU yesterday, and set the min to 245,000 and the max to 499,000 (I've also tried having the max at 245,000 but it doesn't seem to make a difference). My question is, as I'm watching the processor speed jump around, it still jumps up to 998mhz when an app like lookout kicks on. Is SetCPU just not working? Anything special I need to do? I've got it set to "on demand" with the above settings that I mentioned. I did the "unlock perfloc" thing and it said it's already disabled, which I'm assuming the custom ROM already took care of.

Any thoughts or suggestions on SetCPU, or general battery saving apps or techniques?

I also noticed that when I go into the list of "running" apps, there seems to be alot of stuff running in the background. Is there an app to kill the unnecessary stuff?

Sorry for the noob questions, this is my first Android device and first time rooting.

you can try flashing a kernal that helped my battery life. and before i was rooted i used turbodroid to kill useless apps that ran in the background. but im sure there are other apps that can be used to help.

The system itself usually does a pretty good job of killing idle/useless apps. Which rom did you flash? Amon RA is a recovery used to flash files. I would give either Golden Monkey or Freedom a try. If you are still on the stock kernel, I am not sure that SetCPU can disable the perflock even though it says it does(I might be wrong). If you go to settings>about phone>battery check to see if your awake time and up time are close to the same. Also you can tap Battery Use to see what is using the most battery.

Ha ha...that shows you how new I am at this, I thought Amon_RA was the ROM. Good to know. So do recoveries change stuff on the phone? When I flashed Amon RA, the background of my home screen went from that stock rainbow to a carbon fiber background. That's why I thought it was a ROM because certain stuff changed when I flashed it.

I'll try a ROM...thanks.

Oh and I checked the battery usage, the biggest culprits were display 31%, wi fi 21%, cell standby 17%, phone idle 16%, and maps 14%

For the awake time and up time, awake time is 00:36 and up time is 11:44...not sure what those mean.

I have never had it change the background before. It only only writes to the recovery partition which is not access when the phone is booted. Awake time is when the phone is active. Uptime is the time from the last boot up. I would suggest MikG 2.45 as a good starter rom. It is very well done and no flaws to my knowledge.

Battery usage doesn't seem abnormal other than cell standby is a bit on the high side. Low cell signal will cause battery drain as it looks for signal all the time.

So I went to the XDA site for mikG 2.45 and the link that goes to the download page seems to be dead. Anybody have a direct link to download that ROM?

Thanks!

You have to create an account at themikmik.com. It is easy and free to do. Then the links will be available to you.

Thanks guys, found it. So I've got MikG 2.45 and GoldenMonkey on my SD card. Do I flash the ROM and then the Kernel, or does the order matter?

always flash the rom first then a custom kernel of your choice. the rom has its own kernel so it will overwrite any kernel before it.

Ok...installed the ROM and kernel (thanks guys!). Now the plot thickens...all of my downloaded apps are gone (Titanium Backup, SetCPU, Lookout, etc)...how do I get those back?

did you backup your apps with titanium backup? download titanium backup and it run it, if you did.

LOL...I had Titanium Backup, but didn't manually back anything up...didn't know I had to.

Any other way to get those back or do I have to buy everything again? This is quite the intro to the Android universe...sheesh.

well that is why nandroid backups are your friend. make a nandroid of your current rom. then restore your previous nandroid backup. run titanium bacup and and backup your apps. then restore your current rom's nandroid and restore your apps. if that makes any sense.

basically go back save apps. go forward and restore apps.

Thanks...when I just went into the market the apps that I paid for (TB, and setCPU) were available to re-install at no cost. Then I just had to go back and re-install the free ones like wireless tether, etc.

You guys have been awesome...thanks for taking such good care of an Android newbie. I love the mikG 2.45 ROM...very slick. And I can already notice a difference in battery usage with the ROM and Golden Monkey kernel.

Thanks again guys, you rock. Looking forward to being a part of the community.

Ugh...I'm having a major issue with Titanium backup. Since I flashed mikG 2.45 I can't get TB into my apps. The only way I can find it is if I go Menu>Settings>Manage Applications>All applications...that's the only place I can find it...and when I do click on it, all of the buttons are gray except "uninstall". Help!

I did the nandroid thing and went back to the previous stock rom and backed up everything I wanted to save, but now when I restore back to mikG I can't get TB to come to my apps folder.

What does the market say for TB? I've never had TB disappear like that for me...

I find it in the market just fine, it's say "purchased"...then I download it and it will only go into the app menu that is under Menu>Settings>Applications

If I go into my actual app list from the home screen, it's not anywhere to be found...I can only see it if I follow the specific path listed above, and even then I can't use it...it just gives an overview screen with all the buttons grayed out except for "uninstall"...this is weird:confused:

Maybe wipe cache and davlik? Not sure, but that sometimes helps when things get wonky.

I've wiped cache, dalvik, and data...didn't help.

Should I just wipe the TB file from my SD card altogether and start from scratch?

I know which apps I had before...I guess at that point I would just have to go back to the market and download them again one by one.

Ugh, that didn't work either, I uninstalled TB, completely wiped the folder from my SD card, rebooted, reinstalled TB and it ends up in the same menu path as described before. It won't show in my main app folder and even when I find it through Settings, I can't open it to use it.

You only downloaded the PRO Key. You need to download the free version of Titanium BackUp then Re-download the one you purchased to unlock the PRO features :)

Jon is right the one you DLed was just the key, if you have to DL the app it self and the key which is what you DLed already Here

Open the app hit "backup restore", it will populate.

Hit menu and then batch, that's where you will find the backup and restore options.
