method: odin 3 one click download. (i thought this was an app, but it is not an app).
long story, but accidentially deleted my stock "contacts.apk" app. needed to unroot. complete 20 hour nightmare over several days, ruined my weekend. i did not want a free contacts emulator, just my preference, and i have read every single comment on this blog, and researched google, and looked at 30 different web sites and pages to do this.
THE UNROOT SOLUTION, FOR ME, A SAMSUNG CAPTIVATE 2.2 FROYO, WAS THIS YOUTUBE VIDEO, LINKED BELOW. i wanted to put the bloat back on the captivate. this method will take you to 2.1. you will then need to do the official "samsung kies mini update" via your mini usb cable and computer to get back to 2.2 froyo and in the future, 2.3 gingerbread, when 2.3 is released, unless the person who made this video updates it. also, there may be better videos, but i liked this video, and this is again, in my opinion.
what the video did for me was to unroot, put my captivate back to stock condition, with all the crap-apps and bloatware. my captivate is a year old, and was 2.1.. if you bought your captivate with 2.2 froyo on it, this method will likely pout you back to 2.1, then you will need to do the official samsung kies mini update for 2.2, or possibly 2.3 gingerbread in the future.
there are many ways to do this, and many opinions, and a lot ofg people here are experts. i am not an expert, nor do i want to be. i just want to do what is as simple and easy as possible. i tried to download zip files, etc., etc. do what you want, it is no difference to me. i am merely and only sharing what worked for me, and what i found simple.
it is obviously not a high tech or sexy video, but it was simple and easy.
good luck..
unroot video link (sorry, i do not know why it posts the same link twice): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdN_9BW1SsY
official samsung kies update for the latest buildware, which is froyo 2.2. this is a samsung site. in the future, i do NOT know if this will or will not update to 2.3 gingerbread. as of this post, it updates to froyo 2.2: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00032810&fm_seq=32978
