Help hero vs moment?

I too poured through these forums before deciding to try the Moment first. I thought I would really like having the option of the hw keyboard (had an Instinct before). After using the Moment for 3 weeks, found that having both keyboards just really complicated things, esp. since I did not really like either one. The virtual had lag, and the hw keyboard I could not type with my (pretty short) nails like I could on a Palm. I had to lay it down and push down on keys w/ fingers which made it rock back and forth. Plus, with both keyboards, you don't really get quick on either one. I also felt that it was so large and awkward in the hand, felt like I would drop it. Loved the bright display and the Android market, but kept that thing on the bar, fearing to take it anywhere, that I might drop it and not be able to return it! I returned it and counted the days until I got my Hero, which I loved immediately! It took my Yahoo mail first try, which the Moment would not, no matter what I tried. I was really worried about the virtual keyboard and possibly getting frustrated with it, but have not had any problems at all. I hated the autocorrect on my Instinct, but the Hero's is awesome. They are both great phones though. My husband has an Instinct, and still uses his stylus to type as he has big fingers. That may make the Moment more the thing for those guys. I think they should package an extra battery with these android phones though, like they did with the Instinct.

FYI...if you do go with the Moment, make sure your slider is tight! I got one that was very loose--opened in my purse and would slide when taking a picture. Even when held, top screen would wiggle back and forth a little. It is a wide and thick phone, so make sure you are not getting a restocked!

Ya they all loosen up over time (so does the DROID BTW it just takes a lot more open/closing before it starts to wear out)... I am looking for a way to tighten it up (have used eraser shavings in teh track in the past to increase friction to tighten the slider up but not sure which approach to take right now)...

Hmmm... different strokes for different folks.

3 screen on to Moment can easily be changed to 5 or 7 with a different ui.

I hated to touch screen on the Hero, the only reason it feels smoother is it has oleo phobic coating, to me it was still too slow, especially compared to Moment.

The trackball on the hero got a grain or two of sand beneath it... sounded and felt terrible... that's a weak point on the phone. Can't happen with an optical pad. My optical pad seems pretty precise btw...

Hero doesn't run app or games nearly as smoothly as moment, especially those that use 3D.

Hero has a quality control issue that affects every unit. There is a gap between the screen and one of the keys that will allow dust to penetrate under the glass screen; mine had a large amount after only a few days, I can't imagine how bad it would be after a year.

And hard keyboard vs virtual...again that's a personal thing. Just remember though, you can always add a virtual keyboard that is to your liking later... you can't add a physical one.

Google voice search can and will be added later.

Physical size...again this is a personal thing. I feel much safer with my brick called Moment than I did with that puny hero. I mean really, once the zombie apocalypse happens which would you trust to bash in the skull of a ravenous zombie with.... yeah that's what I thought.

*example*. The other day I dropped my Moment accidentally on my friends foot, broke 3 of his metatarsals and number 2,3,4, and 5 phalanges, and this was through his steel toe boots...Hero woulda shattered into a billion little shards....

Not trying to be antagonistic, just pointing out the reasons I left hero for Moment.

*edit* I apologize for any mistakes, this was posted from my Moment.

I had the hero for three weeks, and coming from the Instinct I liked it. The Hero is a nice phone, but after having the Moment for a few days the speed difference is HUGE. The Moment is much faster in processing everything from web pages, texts, and apps. The virtual keyboard on the hero just did not work well for me. The real keyboard on the Moment is the easiest and most functional I've ever used on a mobile device. HTC has some nice custom built widgets on the hero, but it is these extras that slow the phone down to a crawl at times. The Moment works fast and without the lag time of the hero.

Biggest issue with the hero was the specs of dust I had in the upper right corner of the screen after two weeks. This is a common, unacceptable issue with the hero. The Sense UI on the hero is nice, but again it is not very receptive. Like old computers of the past the hero is trying to do too much, too soon.

Maybe the most interesting thing in the whole hero vs. moment comparison is the way Sprint is PUSHING the hero over the moment. From print and tv ads, to the salespeople in their stores. The Moment isn't getting a lot of love, but it is clearly a MUCH better phone.

I had a hard time deciding between the phones at first, and I went with the hero because at the time I knew it was going to get Android 2.0. Now that the Moment is scheduled to get it too, choosing the Moment over the Hero seems like a no brainer.

I wonder if it is Sprint pushing the Hero or if HTC is paying more ad bucks vs Samsung. I only saw a Samsung ad for the Instinct one time while I had it (albeit a super huge ad in Times Square). Doesn't HTC have that influence. Also I see a lot of push from Best Buy for Samsung's other phones. Could be where they are putting their target advertising dollars.

I have already got confirmation from sprint (granted it was a tier 2 tech person i believe) that samsung hasen't given anything towards advertisement dollars and HTC has (they assumed samsung didn't want to waste the money due to the highly extensive ad campaign Verizon and Motorola are doing for the droid.. Hell there is a droid ad on this very forum right up top staring me in teh face).... Samsung wasen't going to try to fight the droid, instead just release the damn thing and hope some people buy it i guess...

Are you really going to listen to what a tech has to say about the spending habits of a couple of hugh companies?

I went back and forth after the announcement of Samsung bringing an android phone into the mix. The three things that won me over were:

QWERTY keyboard
amoled screen
the dust issue with the HTC Hero.

I had to deal with the dust with the BB curve/pearl and just couldn't get an expensive smartphone that the manufacturer was too oblivious to not catch this problem. The 4th reason is I have always been a huge fan of Samsung; have used their monitors, and their phones for at least 5 years now. I am not disappointed by my choice.

And I still can't believe people bicker about the size/weight of this phone. It's not that big.

Here is my take on the whole Subject.

Hero Vs. Moment

I purchased the Moment about 2 weeks ago, and Loved it. I was coming off owning blackberry for about 5 years now, and I could tell right out of the box that I was gonna love the Moment. I had it about 1.5 weeks, the apps were killer, the speed was awesome. My only problem wasn't battery life, or apps running me down and bogging me out. It was that my gps was telling me after a week I was in Germany off the Autoban 2. Up until then it was awesome, my only issue was that i needed more then 3 screens. I like to set up one for just internet, one for phone usage, and the other for music, then one for a calender. only issue is, no 4th screen.

Since I didn't have a spare moment in stock i had to bring home the Hero, the lack of full keyboard bothered me for a bit but I got used to using the full screen board. The 7 screens I have no use for them all, I really would need 4 tops maybe 5. I like the fact the calender, Music, and Email can have its own widget with the extra spaces. I read all of the posts and see many people compare the two phones but leave out things like personal preference. For me the hero is nice, its a great phone and very well built. Don't feel as flimsy as the Moment mainly cause its one piece structure. But, that for me is its own down fall because of the fact I have large hands, and it feels like i have to cut my thumb in half to use the screen. So here is my break down.

1. Screen Resolution I give to the Moment over the hero.

2. Functionality I give to the Moment over the hero, why because even tho it only has 3 screens the orientation will switch to the side view in other apps other then just internet and select apps, so you don't always have to keep it in the prone position.

3. GPS I give this to the Hero over the moment, perhaps it was just my Moment that was malfunctioning but I liked how I could select where i am at go to Google, and select where i want to go and not have to type loads of info onto the phone.

4. Apps, I give this a tie as anyone can tell Android Market has tons of applications provided for both phones.

5. Size, I have to give it to hero, its sleek look and design is great, its thin and portable.

6. Call Clarity, it's almost a tie but goes to the Moment.

7. Blue Tooth, I give to moment as I was using My hero with the MotoRokr head phones and I had very shitty experience couldn't move my head, move my head the least and the music would cut out, i would move my hand over the phone and it would cut out. Phone was only about 1foot from head set.

8. BATTERY LIFE, to me they both have life spans that will and always do very. And They Very because of apps in the back ground, temperature, call length, Bluetooth, GPS, and etc. So people that are trying to compare on over the other and base which phone is better because of it, I have your simple solution, CAR CHARGER. Because everything plays a variable on how long your battery last's including how you charge it, so base your comparison on phone capability only because if the phones not going to do what the hell you want it to, then the battery don't matter.

Over all this comparison on Moment vs Hero is based only on user experience. Yes the Hero has more screens, for what I like, but the moment has the speed and more personal functionality for what I do. The moment fits better in my hand, feels more like a phone to me, works the way I need it to. Does not lag on its apps, and only issue I had with it was the GPS. I will be taking my Hero Back to get my Moment again. nOt to mention the Hero has the dust issue and a damn track ball lol.

Also best app for any smart phone is Mobile Defense. Check it out.

Regaurdless lol, I ment to say the screens clarity is better. I love the moment over the hero. I have been looking for a few things like the time and weather widget like the hero and the large calander. Any one know were I can find these? I tried the panda home screen but wasn't fond of the diamond style layout. Anything have 5 screens side layout market.

I haven't found a home replacement yet that hasn't made the phone feel laggy. GDE and Panda were the ones I lasted the longest with. If I do the kernel thing, I might give it another shot. Using the Hero for a bit so I can play with the Moment consequence free.

I've tried to run these apps, and it keeps telling me that I can't, the permission for 3rd party is set to accept and allow. But always tells me it can't. I used DxTool, but didn't like the lay out or the way it always had te Dx logo in the corner of the screen. I just want to have the xtra screen, and clock widget with weather built in to the mail screen. Any ideas, why i can't find any thing for it. Software updates aren't avail yet, and its bothering me. IF it wasn't for the price of my bill each month i would think about swapping carriers. But i truly like my Moment.

DxTop you mean? Icon in the corner? You're not supposed to use the demo version long term haha... Obviously the paid version doesn't have the logo lol. And personally I love the four screen diamond layout... but that's totally just a preference thing.

I usually ignore whining, but I'll make the exception. AGPS was fixed in cl14 so things like Google maps work a whole lot better. OTH, for whatever reason, the GPS receiver in this phone is fairly weak and prone to loosing lock. Sprint navigation doesn't take advantage of AGPS data and is unaffected by cl14. The GPS in the Touch Pro that the Moment replaced was far more sensitive though its poor speaker and small screen made for a lousy turn by turn device. If you want to use your phone as a turn by turn car navigator right now, the Moment isn't your best choice IMHO. Though I prefer my Moment for most tasks, my wife's Pre works much better with Sprint Nav. It's possible that the upcoming 2.1 update will make things better, but that's an unknown at this point. If you need a reliable nav unit for daily use, a dedicated PNA is a much better choice and acceptable units can be found for as low as $50. As for this phone in general, I like it BUT the incredibly inept way the cl14 update was/is being handled makes it impossible for me to recommend it anymore. When I bought the phone, there were quite a few people around here that warned me about Samsung's poor support. I didn't listen, having had a few issues with HTC already and assuming they couldn't be much worse. I regret that now. The phone may be a solid modern design, but having to search out technicians for a simple software patch is a part of the past that should already have been long forgotten. I have no confidence that the larger 2.1 update will be implemented any better, and that makes me very :(.

I have had a pre and 4 Moments. I am considering getting a hero. Are there software updates for the hero. Does rooting make it a lot better? My main concern is dust under the screen. Any advice will be appreciated.

Check the Hero forum.

There's one software update for the Hero that fixed the awake time issue, and a couple other things.

Rooting itself doesn't make the phone any better, it's what you do with the capability that makes it better than stock.

Dust under the screen seems to be a scattered issue, and the dust is very minimal from the pictures I've seen.

Yes, the GPS problem is fixed. It has a really good spell-checker, too.

Ok I have had both of these phones for a month and the moment is better overall. Im have compared each phone and any feature that the Hero has the moment either has or can get with customization. Customization is the purpose of android anyways.

Hero - Android 1.5 W/Sense UI

Pros:
1. Sense UI
2. 5 megapixel
3. Led Notification/Trackball Notification
4. Battery Life
5. Can take out SD card without removing battery
6. Very loud speaker phone

Cons:
1. Auto-Backlight fluctuates and flashlight apps dont brighten the screen
2. Trackball tends to light up randomly
3. Lag issues
4. No camera button

Moment - Android 1.5

Pros:
1. Physical & Onscreen keyboard
2. 3.2 Camera with flash and self portrait mirror
3. 800 Mhz processor
4. Optical Trackpad & touch buttons
5. Dedicated camera button
6. AMOLED

Cons:
1. Battery life is a problem with some device but not all
2. Plain android stock software
3. Have to remove battery to take out SD card
4. Average speakerphone

Conclusion:
Ok well if you compare these 2 phone straight out of the box the only thing that makes the hero better is that it has Sense. But lets not forget that the reason for android is that you can customize it however you like which is why I have customizeed my phone to perform similar to sense. I have beautiful widgets that replicate sense's flipclock and settings widgets. I have twidroid pro which give better notifications and widget than peep on the hero. I have Mxing Music Player which is just as good as the hero music player. Also I have Smooth Calendar which copies the calendar widget and also the moment comes with moxier mail which Exchange built in. Finally Im running Pandahome and I have 7 screens just like the hero does. So basically I replicated the entire hero software and put it on a faster processor with better hardware. To me the moment is hands down the winner. Also, for people thinking well the hero has a better camera. There is NOT a big difference in quality when taking pics. You will only notice the difference when printing pics. Plus you cant even take pics at night on the hero. Also after the 2.1 update how much are you gonna keep like Sense UI??????? After awhile it will get old and the slower processor will lag. While the moment will be able to have 2.1 and can be customized however you want to replicate any new home software that comes out.
