ok guys and gals
I am new to the android and have some basic questions. maybe I ca get some straight answers.

1. I have tried to root the phone (samsung galaxy prevail) (boost)
the program (z4root) I used made the phone vibrate when it was just sitting there.

2.when i plug it into my computer and open the file system, How do I know where the SD card is? how is it listed?
can i transfer most of the phone stuff to it? I always get a message, Phone memory almost full. have a 4 gig sdcard.

thanks in advance

mark
I don't own a Prevail although I can help you there, don't use z4Root, use Titanium Backup as previous replies have mentioned, looks like z4Root does not work with it, I personally, would recommend Root Manager/Explorer *I forget the name* When you plug it in, it should ask you to mount the SD Card on the phone, then a new screen will appear after its 'mounted' as a Disk Drive instead of Mobile Media/Samsung Galaxy/etc.

Hope this helps...man, I really wish I had the money for this phone.

This must be a hit or miss with this exploit,I was on GB 2.3.5 and I ran the script once and was able to gain root.

Same here. I had to try several times...

As I recall, I restarted my phone after getting this error from "root.bat"...

Getting temp root
[1] Segmentation fault app_process /dev...
error: protocol fault (no status)

The phone was "buzzing" over and over again.

I also killed one (or more?) "adb.exe" "hung" processes using the Windows 7 "Resource Monitor". I think that might have been the key to getting the "rooting" process to finish...or not! :-)

At this point I'm just guessing as to exactly what made everything work.

In the end, I used a Windows command prompt to run "adb shell" and then verified that "su root" worked under Linux. This told me that I had in fact "rooted" my "new-and-improved" Android 2.3.5 OS.

Finally, I then proceeded to remove a bunch of Boost Mobile's pre-installed "bloatware" apps using the free version of Titanium Backup.

Your mileage may vary. Good luck! :-)

I received the same error at first on Gingerbread, but after right click, went to properties on "root" and checked off run in xp compatability mode w/SP3 it worked the second time just. Thanks a million Shabbypenguin for all your assiatance and hard work, & a special thanks to all those who made it possiable.

Should my phone be taking a long time to reboot? It's been almost five minutes...:confused:

yes.

First boots can be painfully slow if you have a ton of apps.

I just recently installed CTmod 2.2 on my phone, and then installed DTa2SD without wiping my sd-ext partition.

took like 15 minutes to boot the first time.

I had 33 but I never seen more than a 4 maybe 5 min reboot. I would be sweating bullets after 10 or so I would imagine. Its nice to know yours was 15. So if it ever takes.that long I will relax a little more.

I might be exaggerating a bit, but I'll never admit to it :D

well, I've read through hundreds of posts in a couple of threads (I started in the other one)...I ran the stuff as stated.
My phone is on and things work, how do you know if it is successful? I am brain fried and finally thought I should ask a question. :)

Thank you so much for your reply, I hope it is an easy answer and not a stupid question...:P

Download titanium backup. If it works you are rooted

Please help. I am lost.
I am in debugging mode. SD card is unmounted.
I downloaded the file, opened it and started the process.
I got the message that said "you should have root"

Now what? The apps are telling me that I do not have root.
Someone please help. I turned the phone off and back on. I know these are basic questions, but I really need help.

I think my phone is not connecting to my computer. I just realized that the root program will run and say "you should have root" no matter what. (dumb of me I know)

My phone says it is in debug mode and the drivers are downloaded, put it does not seem like the root program is doing anything to my phone. Any ideas?

Once you download the drivers and install them on your computer hard drive, what do you do? Is there another step. When I plug the phone into the computer I do not get any message that the computer is searching for drivers or anything else.

The computer will only say "searching for drivers" if you DONT have the proper drivers

I apologize for sounding extremely novice but are these instructions for Samsung Galaxy Prevail? Reason I ask is because you mentioned .."its just windows" Second question, what is that link below? (http://goo.gl/S5wq7)?

1) download the zip
2) extract it to your desktop or downloads folder
3) enable usb debugging via settings > applications > development
4) run the root.bat (it may be called root instead dont fret... its just windows) or if you are on mac/linux run the .sh
5) PROFIT!!

Finally got it. I feel really stupid because of how simple the fix was. The drivers were fine. I just needed to extract the entire root file into a new folder. I was just trying to open the root file after the initial opening.

At first it did not work, but then I saw that someone posted to restart the phone and then open root. Worked perfectly. I now have root.

The ironic part is that I was going through all of this so that I could tether my Kindle fire when I go out of town next week, but Kindle apparently does not recognize phone wifi hot spots. I tried to connect and it did not show the signal. After searching the web a little, it looks like Fire will not have this ability. :( Oh well, at least I have a rooted phone now.

A friend connected his kindle to my prevail using my hotspot. I do not remember any problems with it. Not sure if he had the fire but it was the cheapest version without 3g
