Root Herp a derp!! Pay no attention!

Right. I meant flash. None of the newest releases are for 2.2.2 they will only bootloop (with 2.2.2)

They work as advertised on gingerbread

That explains it then. Learn something new every day. So I should've upgraded to Gingerbread stock (OTA)first , then root, then flash the rom. But which root method would I have used?

Use odin to install a prerooted ej06 or fa19 img
It also installs cwm in the process.
Even if the ota update installs successfully (doubtful) if you have cwm, it will overwrite it with the stock recovery

Sorry, I'm confused after reading through this thread. To achieve root, I should use the one click root method? The phone is on 2.2.2/Froyo and I have not updated to 2.3/Gingerbread yet(OTA).

If I take the system update to 2.3/Gingerbread, I should use Odin to root?

ah ha lol now i understand all the trouble you were having with cm9...i believe you were trying to flash cm9 from froyo and it was screwing you up...also when you kept bootlooping when trying to flash other roms which are all gb...sound right?

Yep. I'm a novice for the Prevail in flashing roms. Rooting this was easy but it's different coming from an EVO where you can root a 2.2 and flash a GB/2.3 rom easily. I had 2.2 when I got the Prevail. One thing is when I tried to restore the stock rom and wiped it 3 times before trying to restore it, it still bootlooped. That is what is puzzling to me.

Yeah that part I couldn't explain bro...but atleast now you know why you weren't able to flash any of the roms...I have gotten in the habbit of keeping tons of backups on the pc

Just noticed you have a galaxy tab 10.1? Did you root that? Was it easy? I'm looking to get that next. :D

If you have a question about any device having root , usually you can just look it up in the device directory here in Android Forums . If root is available , 9 times outta 10 you will be able to find that out by checking in the All Things Root section for the device .:)

I finally rooted the Prevail again and was able to flash a ROM on it. If I don't flash my EVO to Boost, I may just buy a Prevail or even buy another Prevail as a backup. This is so easy. Thanks to all the devs and people who helped me out in this forum. :D

Why don't you use Odin to root your device ? Also , you MUST have the drivers installed first .

I'm totally new at rooting phones. What drivers do i need?

I was wanting to avoid Odin do to the whole restoring back to factory default.

Well I do believe tha drivers are in the zip file, all you have to do is download it and open it with 7zip or winrar (7z is much faster and supports more formats) once extracted open the file and you should see a file with the drivers in it... If not hit me a pm and ill find a link.

If the drivers are not in the zipfile then you can download them from this thread . There is a link for them on the 7th line down .

EDIT: If you continue having trouble rooting it then use Odin . Just be sure to copy all of your card contents to your PC . ( music photos , etc. ) Also , make sure that all of your contacts and calendar events are synced to your Google account .

Honestly , I'm not sure that this method will even work with the new update . Can someone confirm please ?

You may have no other choice BUT 2 use Odin.

Cook , this will probably not work on your phone . I've read back through the thread and many have ended up using Odin . Sorry to break the news since you said that you didn't wanna go there but it looks like that's probably gonna be what you need to do .

Yup it's looking that way i can't get the one click root to work it reboots the phone but does nothing to root it.

Thanks for the help guys i will give Odin a shot.

When using Odin , be sure to unzip the original download to a folder on your desktop . There will be other zipped files within the original download . Leave those zipped up . Put your phone in download mode , ( from a powered off phone , press volume down , camera button then power all at the same time until downloading in yellow appears on the screen ) then plug the phone in to your computer . Open Odin and make sure that it is reading your phone on a COM . Select your OPS file then click the other tabs and put the tar files in the appropriate places . Click start . Once your phone reboots , it will be done and you can disconnect it .
