Root Horrific 3g speeds

I had a hardware rev3 evo that I gave to my girlfriend and used an upgrade to get myself another Evo that is also rev3.

This thing is worthless in 3g. 100k down/up with a 900-100ms ping. On my old evo my girlfriend can hit the same test server and get a meg down and sub200 ping.

Both are on Myns5 but this was the case before that too. I've tried everything I can think of. Right now its back on the newest radio/pri/nv because I figured I would do a factory reset and reload the rom as a chance but nothing. Ive tried an older radio, different kernel, the hack to remove the proxy.

not matter what my 3g speeds are capped at 100k down, 100k up and 900+ ping. Its basically made the phone useless in 3g speed as the market times out, maps wont play nice and such.

Is there anything I can do before I get pissed off, unroot and return the damned thing?

I read an interesting thread I have yet to try (trying today) about increasing 3g speeds. Give it a try and let us know how it worked for you. (Fix) Downloads for Music apps and faster 3G - xda-developers
 
^ definitely try that...but I experience this same thing from time to time even with the fix applied. I never have a second phone to test side by side.

Is it my correct understanding that you and your gf's phone are side by side and there is a difference in test results?

also, if you have time...do this. Next time you get these horrific speeds...reboot your phone, give it 5 minutes or so..and try again. I am noticing that it fixes mine every time. I can't figure out why it is doing it though.
 
I had done the "fix" but no effect. I ended up unrooting it and taking it in. The CSA redid the data provisioning and now its getting a meg down on 3g. I'll dick with it for a bit before re-rooting but it looks like something didnt take with respect to their provisioning of the phone. I suspect I wasnt actually getting EVDOrevA, but the standard EVDO since the data speeds were always around 130k, regardless. The speed tests were too consistent all day long to blame the time of day or server.

Its been good since, now back on Myns and still getting more reasonable 3g speeds. I'm almost certain that this was the case, I never actually got 3g. Once she reset the data connection its been fine since (and this phone seems to get a bit better 4g speed too).

It never got above 140, usually between 120-140. Although when I did go into the sprint store it was 60k but it never was a good speed. Now it varies more but its varying between 1.2m to 600k.
 
had them do mine today. still getting the occasional 200-300...but overall 3g and 4g speeds seem to have improved by quite a bit

What exactly were you having them do?
Because on occasion i get this too and maybe i can take it in and have them fix it.

did you take it in to get reprovisioned or can you call and have it done over the phone calling from another line of course?

They're able to active the phone that way in the first place, so I don't see why they couldn't do it again. It's worth giving them a call and trying.
 
Im having similar problems... maybe worst than the op on 3g Im getting around an average of about 90 kb down and about 102kb up with a latency of 832... also after rooting On WIFI And 3G no matter how good the signal is the progress bar on the browser hangs and around 3/4 of the way for like a minute or so before it it loads the page.. Ive reflashed my Rom a few times, Ive tried the speed fix described above.. with no luck

I can confirm this...I have had Sprint successfully reprovision my old Hero over the phone... of course, calling from a different phone. :)
 
Called and got an awesome guy on the phone. He told me a lot of good stuff. Basically updating PROFILE is pretty much the same as them 'reprovisioning' on their end.
 
Thats what the guy said.. and he seemed to know what he was talking about.
The 'reprovisioning' also occurs when you update profile...as in the towers and phone "re-sync". Both accomplish the same result.
 
^except that in some cases it isn't taking...thus the reason to take it in and have them do it hard wired via usb to a computer.

in my case internet speeds would run anywhere from 10 kbps to 130 download. upload was pretty normal.

for the most part they are better now with lows averaging in the 300's. I did have a few tests that came in in the range of 70-150 as well though so I'm not sure how much the reprovisioning really did to help
 
My speeds vary, ranging from decent/terrible (>1mbps down/<30kbps up) to atrocious (slower than dial up). Mostly it's atrocious. I was under the impression 3g (>1mbps) would essentially be high speed internet on-the-go, boy was I wrong. 4g is a myth.

4g i not nearly as good as it was. with everyone using it, I get roughly 2-2.5 mb/down.which I feel like we should be getting better speeds. when I first found working 4g in the same area, it was 7.5-8mb/down. I've got pics to prove it! if I can find them....lol
its because so many people have 4g phones now.

He may have said that but empirically I cant agree. I updated my profile, PRL, PRI, NV, AG, BBC, HIV, whatever and it never changed. The chick in the sprint store dicked with the MSL and something on their computer and now its at least 10x faster. And this was immediate, it wasnt like an hour later it was 10x faster, the moment she handed the phone back I ran speedtest and was getting 600-100k where 5 min prior I was getting 60k.

the 4g or 3.5g or whatever thankfully was always good on this phone:

That is exactly what happened to me. Either call in or unroot and take it in and they can fix it. Mine was averaging worse pings though, like 945+. Now it pings at under 200ms.

I think it only matters in this case, where its a hard stop. Its not going to fix the occasional crappy performance due to load or bad server but in my case before they did it I NEVER got a decent speed in 3g. 140k was my absolute max in every test. Im still convinced that with a hard stop like that I wasnt actually in EVDORevA even though the phone would say "3g." I think it assumes all EVDO is 3g.

I will definitely try calling them tonight (assuming that I don't have to unroot to call do I?) If worst comes to worst ill just unroot and take it in... because this is getting frustrating it took me almost 10 minutes to load this page and write this....-_-
