Hotspot ONLY on 4G?!?

Changes in terms are not a bad thing as it lets you terminate your contract consequence free (if they don't grandfather you). Would be nice to see that happen within contract and just as Palm releases their next gen and hopefully 4g device.
Correct. My friend at sprint says currently there is no limit and definitely will be no 4G limit, but they may end up putting the 5 GB limit on 3G data depending how actual usage patterns and network congestion turns out. Hopefully we can all be grandfathered in on unlimited if we complain though.
It took a fair bit of complaining with my original Sprint 3G laptop modem which was unlimited in the marketing terms and contract on Sprint when they introduced the 5 GB cap.

it would be cool if the $30 was for 4g and 3g was free. I know that's not the case...just wish it were. I do think that the $30 charge will go down or away though...just there now to see if their network can take it (a la Palm Pre + on Verizon).

Exactly. If they change the terms, we either get grandfathered or get out of our contracts with no ETF.

that would just be dumb. many would forgo the $360/yr to get free 3g hotspots and just further bog down the 3g for everyone else. The whole idea is to promote use of 4g and free up 3g bandwidth. You want to deal with the AT&T/iphone type of complaints?

sprint is not at&t. Besides, it's not bandwidth that is the problem (unless you are talking about hsdpa). It's poor planning on AT&T's part. Moreover, their voice is the biggest problem.

not saying you are totally wrong though. I just think that after they confirm their network can handle it, they'l reduce the price (just like Verizon did).

Further bog down the 3G?
I've never experienced congestion issues and I am a heavy 3G laptop modem user on Sprint on a daily basis. Maybe its a problem in other cities.

I did see a $1200 bill the month the 5 GB cap was put in place. Getting out of that was some fun times with support.

Sprint isn't Verizon either. It's #3 so why would there be congestion issues currently? Verizon only did it with webOS too. the Evo is the first phone to offer hotspot capability on Sprint. There will be others. Hopefully Palm (crossing fingers), WP7, other Android phones. Not to mention Android's built in hotspot capability in Froyo. Sprint puts forth a good premier lineup with the best rate plans with 4g service and uncapped 3g hotspot service for free? Not saying it will cause issues, but it could.

I think I'd rather see hotspot at $20/mo (or even $15) overall for a bit, see that things are issue free, then go free. If you're then sitting at $15 or 20 for 4g, it's more palatable, more areas have service, and you'll see more spending more time in 4g.

Though it could all go free over time. Postpaid service could be venturing more and more into the land of commodity, so who knows. I just don't see it going free right now or the very near future.

And an extra $120/yr is definitely nicer than seeing cap issues like that.

When I just turned on the hotspot, it said it shares your phones 3g/4g connection with other de
vices.

I just got off the phone with a Sprint Customer Care Specialist who kept insisting on telling me that I could only use the hotspot option if I had a 4G signal – That if I only was getting a 3G signal that I would not be able to activate the hotspot. I asked her several times if she was sure this was correct because I was under the impression that you just needed a data signal in order to set up a hotspot and it didn’t matter if it was 3G or 4G. She put me on hold twice to confirm and came back with the same answer. This isn’t right, is it?

3G & 4G both work with it.

My screen cap did not attach. 800x480. Site limits to 620x280. Time to upgrade this site to allow screen caps from an EVO!
