How have you dealt with the heat?

I ask because this last week has, for most of the country(im in NY), been BRUTAL. Now, here's why heat is worse than the cold, IMHO:

Say its been a long hot day, 95-101 degrees, etc, you've had windows open, doors open to the screen, etc. Now, even at night, when it says the external temperature is in the 70s, your house is still going to be hot, because if there's no breeze, etc, its that much harder to exchange/transfuse the warmer air for the cooler, something I've noticed when having screen doors and windows open till 3 AM, its just not been enough. What was worse, is the other day, even with fans and a AC going, and little hot air coming back into my room, door shut and all, with the ambient heat around 102, I could only get my room temp down into the high 80s-90 degree range. Now, how effed up is that.

I moved to the West Coast (been in the 60's and 70's during the day, and average 50 some degrees at night.. God how I love Washington State!). Best way ever to deal with the heat. ;)

I hate the East Coast.. will never live there again.

We got a window AC for the bedroom. I want to say it's 5,000 BTU. It is essential if you want to sleep here in IA. If the heat itself doesn't kill you, the humidity will, at least if you are used the CA's dry climate like we are. Cost us $100 on sale at best Buy and only costs about $10-15 a month to run. During the August heat last year it ran us about $25 for the month. Still FAR more economical than central air, and because we both work and go to school during the day it's a waste to use the central IMO.

im an oddball when it comes to the heat, this past friday i didnt find all that hot. I woke up early (for me thats round 8am) went out washed and waxed my car, then me and some friends went to mayhem fest (a fairly decent metal/hardrock festival)and was out in the sun wearing short and my hippy cape (tye dye with peace sign) and didnt really start feeling hot at all.

my girlfriend is the same way, guess that one of the main reasons we wanna move to florida over boston, doesnt get hot enough here :)

Its been 3 digit weather down here in Texas.

ACs on both my job and at home are screwy, if Winter don't come by soon, I'm going to melt.

Wasn't this hot and hectic last Year

Central AC FTW. Its all of 72 degrees in my house right now. But I live in the south so this we just call this kind of weather July.

Come to Ireland for a couple of months........on our hottest days you'd still have goosebumps from the cold:D Jesus wept...what i wouldn't give for some real heat:) This week ouur weather forcasters told us we were due a heat wave.....guess what? It reached 18 degrees.....

i've found this to be true also. i have a window unit in my great room(15K BTU) and a window unit in my bedroom(8K BTU). the great room opens into the kitchen, so the big unit takes care of all that space.

these are the only rooms that me and my gf spend any time in. the office, and guest bedroom hardly get used.

the only time the central air turns on is if i have a guest staying over and need to cool that room down.

i've had this set-up for 3 summers so far, and it's amazing how much more efficient it is than running the central air.

Maybe you need a better A/C. Also you probably know that A/C only works properly when all the windows and doors are closed and sealed, thermal insulation makes a difference as well.

When I was in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province last year, in July and August it got to 47C(116F) during the day and 42C(107F) at night. Yet I was able to maintain my apartment at a comfortable 25C-27C(77F-80F) with A/C. Of course when I went outside, it was like walking into an oven.

I find it funny that your "heatwave" is just a normal day here in the Philippines. I usually keep the AC on all day but here's a couple of low budget things I do to keep warm.

First thing, drink lots of cold water even if you don't think you're thirsty, ear light colored thin sleeveless shirt and shorts, store any fuzzy carpet you have (anything that keeps the heat in), put ice on your wrist, it will cool you down instantly and block any and all sunlight from going into your house.

I never thought that moving to Florida from New York would mean cooler temperatures, but there ya go. We haven't had any real "heat waves" this summer at all. It was up around 100 for about a week back in May, but that's it.

And to beat the heat: I think about my brother in Iraq and my husband in Afghanistan. In both places, it's consistently 115 degrees, and they walk around with 25+ pounds of Kevlar, the grossest and sweatiest thing ever made, on at all times.

It could always be worse.

Here in NYC it called indoor Air Conditioning

Well here in AZ it's been rather tepid... right before the 4th of July it hit 120!

For me I just deal with it! My house has AC, my car has AC, my office has AC, and my Harley has air! :p

Is that seriously considered a heat wave in Ireland?

(that's about 65 Fahrenheit for us yanks)

Yes i'm afraid so:D Actually in my mature recollection ( i.e in 46 years) i think the warmest weather we've ever had was about 32 max:(

We do however have lovely green grass all of the time:D

It's been over 100+ every day for about a month. There may be a handful of days in the past month where the temperature was only in the high 90s. A few weeks ago, it was 2200 and it was still over 100 degrees. Sun had been down for several hours, but the heat just hung around. It sucks. The A/C's around here can't keep up for the most part. I have my thermostat set at 70. My house is 80. A lot of other people are experiencing the same thing. I've given up cooking anything at all that's not strictly microwaveable. The heat is just too much. Highs are predicted over 100 every day this week.

Fortunately we have a lot to look forward to. As we move into August, the meteorologists have looked in their crystal balls and tell us that as August comes upon us the temperatures will probably go up. WTF???
