Root HOW TO: Install 2.1 and Root (for dummy's)

You're right, I did re-download it and it was a smaller. I ran it and now I'm up and running. Thanks for your help and this tutorial. Huge help!

Thanks for taking the time to put up the instructions Ramiss!

I successfully flashed 2.1.3, rooted and updated to DD10.

Thanks so much for this guide. Was very easy to follow and now I get to try out 2.1!

Ok, this is my first post here. I've had my Moment for over a month now, and have given up up waiting for an official update from Sprint. Being an ex-WinMo user, I consider myself to be fairly comfortable installing custom ROMs and tinkering around with phones, but Android is totally foreign to me.

I've been trying all night to update to 2.1, following the instructions here to the letter, but I still can't get it to update. I make past the 2nd time you remove the battery and replace it, to the point where you have to push the big "Start Software Download" button. I click it, and then nothing. It says "Updating! Do Not Disconnect",and the progress bar says "Ready...", but nothing happens. I've let it run for an hour and still nothing happens. I have tried 6 times now woth the same result.

I did a google search and read somewhere that this update can only be installed on a rooted phone. I haven't done that yet. I'm still running the stock ROM from Sprint. If this is true, can someone please point me in the right direction to the best way to root?

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP laptop if that matters at all. Thanks!

I'd say first try just unplugging the USB and plugging it back in. Seems to have happened to quite a bit of people if you've searched through the forums. USB drivers suck for this phone. I have to use different drivers for the Sprint update tool vs. ADB...

Also, once the Sprint Update Tool recognizes the phone is plugged in and the "next" button becomes clickable, I never unplug the phone, and just keep clicking next. IE - I don't unplug the phone, take out the battery, put it back in, plug the phone back in... etc even though the program tells you to.

Somebody give me a hand! Im in the middle of rooting and Im on the step to DL they Joey file into my "ROOT" folder on my SD card. I dont have a ROOT folder, do I just make one on my SD card through windows?

Yes. put it on the SD card, just don't put it in a folder. The card's root folder is the card itself. Make sense?

No just put it on the sd card and not in a folder. It is confusing talking about rooting and the root folder. Just put it on the sd card in no folder.

Done just that, it was in the bottom right corner, then I read a few posts up here that said something about file placement. I boot into recovery and it tells me that the file dont exist. Im not suppost to unzip it am I?

I dont click on the Joey file and extract THEM files inside to the SD card do i?

Just tried again, noticed I had accidently dumped a file inside of Joey when I moved it to the top left corner. copied a good version of the file and it still wont take, I get E: faild to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation Aborted

Your doing something wrong. Are you sure you have Joey's Recovery? The screen should say Andriod System Recovery 2.1.3 at the top in green. From there select Apply zip from SD and look for the file. Make sure you are not plugged into the computer.

Also, what is the file name that your are trying to flash? I assumed it was Joey's V5 or the DD10.

yes its Joey's and you just hit the nail on the head, the recovery didnt flash, I need to go do that again. right now it says (IN BLUE) Android system recovery.

Ok im in the process of downloading the recovery rom again to reflash it for the 3rd time. is there a way to tell if the rom flashes successfully after the phone reboots?

I don't really know, I flashed the DD03 file with the Recovery Built in. This is what I would suggest, but it will wipe your phone. The file I used was SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar it should be about 158,376kb.

I would love to have a link to that one

Thanks, but no luck. Do I have to root the phone first before upgrading to 2.1?

No... you dont need to have root to flash to 2.1....this is something you can do after, but has nothing to do with your connectivity issue.

have you tried another computer? seems like its just an issue with your laptop recognizing the drivers...which is a common issue if you search the forums. does your computer recognize the phone at all? are you able to transfer files to/from your sd card? does the phone come up as an unrecognized device in the hardware manager? sorry if u mentioned this in your first post...using my moment now and dont want to scroll back...haha

1. Make sure you are trying to use the Sprint Update Tool in Download mode and not Recovery Mode.

2. Make sure you do NOT plug in the USB cable until the Tool specifically tells you to.

If you are doing the above properly then it is a driver or cable or USB hub issue.

I've had problems with the laptop recognizing the phone in the past. If it doesn't recognize it, I have to reboot it and it get recognized. I tmight have something to do with Windows 7. I'm gonna give it a go on our old XP desktop and let you know how it goes. Thanks.

No luck. Tried it on the desktop and my wife's netbook, both running XP. The computers see the phone, but I'm still getting stuck at the same screen. I did notice that in the lower right corner of the Update Utility screen, there's a small window that says "Ready". When I click on the Start Software Download button, the "Ready" flashes to [Debug] Run, then to [Debug SetupConnection]. ANy ideas?

I'm honestly almost at the end of my rope. I think that if I can't get tomorrow, I'll just (gulp) wait for the official roll out.

NO WAY! What fun is that? Ha-Ha. J/k... I hear your frustrations, it took me quite awhile the first time I had to use the Sprint Update Utility.

So you are getting all the way to the last screen (Start Software Download) but then when you click start, nothing happens? Typically, if you are having trouble with USB / Drivers / Connectivity you don't even make it to the last screen.

You said you tried disconnecting the USB and plugging it back in while on the Start Software screen...?

I'll check the lower right corner of my screen next time I run the utility.

Try restarting the Sprint Updater. Does it say Comconnected on the right side?

Mine got stuck a couple times during 2.1 flash and the 2.1.3 flash.

It would say - Enabling: Estimated time 2sec 0% - in the progress bar but then freeze there. Restarting unfroze it and flashed in seconds.

I had to run it 3 times before it finally installed.

OOOOkay!!! Finally got it this morning.

Someone said something about turning off debugging in the phone settings, and someone else said it wasn't necessary. At that point I figured I had nothing to lose, so this morning I turned off the debugging, and ran the Sprint Updater on my wife's XP netbook, and lo and behold, it worked! Now I'm going to go back in and root this sucker.

Thanks for all your help! It's great to have this forum to turn to for help!
