Root [How To] Root 2.3.4/downgrade and Get S-off

the only reason you should need to back up your sd card,is if you find it to be formatted FAT,or something else, and need to reformat it FAT32. otherwise its contents are safe, but feel free to back them up for some peace of mind.

running unrevoked 3.22 should give you root access with s-on,and will not wipe your phone. technically you could stop there, but IMO its well worth the effort to continue the process and become s-off. if you make a nandroid backup prior to downgrading, you will be able to restore it after downgrading and achieving s-off.

so in the end,you CAN do this without losing any of your setup and data,as long as you make the backup. :)

Anyway to determine that SD file format prior to beginning?

Read the first post completely and thuroughly ;)

It is FAT32.

So I am to assume it is safe to proceed to SU without a backup. Then if I wish to go further I should use TiBU before downgrading and going S-off?

Thank you in advance for your patience with me as I read approximately 80% of the thread, skimming the other 20%, looking for answers to the questions I am posing and I hope I didn't miss them and am annoying you.

youre not near dayton,oh are you? id be happy to let you come over and pop a good battery in and run the RUU to get you up and going if you were close
enuff to do so. :)

lol no only like 1200 miles away and as much as i enjoy driving its probably cheaper to buy a new phone

Just successfully rooted. Now in order to downgrade should I have my phone connected to PC as hard drive through out the entire process?

Also, right after I rooted I updated my clockwork. This shouldn't pose a problem when downgrading should it?

I can't even begin to get this started. The PB31IMG file tells me it doesn't exist when I try to download it.

I have the md5summer thing downloaded however must not know how to use it because it just gives me red dots and a bunch of words that look like they should be on a .txt file telling me about how important md5's are but I see no numbers whatsoever.

Pretty sure if root is this difficult it isn't worth it.

that is correct. running unrevoked 3.22 should not wipe any data.

i just tried it,and it started downloading for me. im using windows 7 and chrome browser. might try a different browser?

im not real familiar with that md5 summer. feel free to search for one thats a lil esaier for you to use. if you google search "free md5 summer" or something along those lines,a bunch of them will pop up... its not important that you use this particular one,it was just one example ive seen frequently.

you can also check md5s on your phone with this app: scary aliens AFV if you like it,or any part of this guide, consider buying the donate version,as scary alien is a great and helpful member here at android forums.

charge only

nope :)

unless im misunderstanding what youre saying here, you do need the directions here to root/downgrade/reroot. the 4.06 update to GB 2.3.4 broke the "rage against the cage" exploit that unrevoked forever uses.

Er, yes Scotty85, you are correct! LOL! Got lost in the versions apparently!

Hi all--this is a fantastic thread.

Sorry if I missed this in all the replies, but I think I am missing something obvious in the first step. Am using the method from the first post, and I keep getting stuck where unrevoked says 'Rebooting into recovery...'. My dinc reboots into clockwork--and I had thought unrevoked would just make everything happen automatically, but I think maybe I need to manually do something in clockwork to root, because that is where the process stops... but I can't seem to figure out what that something is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Scotty or someone around?

I got to a blue ClockworkMod screen that says the following:

waiting for SD card to mount (20s)
card mounted
verifying SD card marker
SD card marker not found
checking internal sd card marker
error verifying extendedcommand
error processing ROM manager script. Please verify you have ROM manager v4.4.0.0 or higher installed
/tmp/recover.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. please open Rom manager to report the issue

with a reboot system now option highlighted and the Unrevoked window says done at the bottom

Choose reboot via power button?

*EDIT* I see in the thread I should use the trackpad but do I select "reboot system now'?

*EDIT2* This post showed me to just hit reboot.

SU app is in my drawer.

Now what!? :)

I guess this means I have a rooted DInc now? If so, thanks! I need to read up on TiBU and ROMs now I guess.

*EDIT3* Root Checker Basic says I have root... I don't feel any different though... strange. :)

*EDIT4* Can I turn USB Debugging off?

look a few posts back,at this post you are prolly fine. superuser is prolly in your app drawer, just need to try and run a couple root only apps then clear data

you should be able to turn it off. if not,i wouldnt worry about it. id even go so far as to reccomend leaving it on so that youre ready to go whenever you need to plug it in to your PC :)

what's up with my dinc 1 that I there doesn't exist a "Power" area in Settings?

sorry if this confused some folks. if you search back from here, someone else had the same prollem and found it in "applications" IIRC. just keep looking until you find a setting that says "fastboot" and uncheck it.

i dont have an inc to check. all my other 2.3.4 devices(inc 2,TB,inspire,merge) have their own dedicated power setting. being sense 1.0 the inc must have it somewhere else.

If I use ROM manager at this time and choose "Backup ROM" will that create a back-up of my stock HTC Sense look and feel that I can return to from flashed ROMs?

Still bone stock with SU, downloaded TiBU and ROM Manager and preparing to downgrade for S-off. I am assuming I need S-off to flash custom ROMs, correct?

I would pretty strongly reccomend booting to clockwork recovery and manually using the menus there to make your backup.

But yes,it will make a backup of exactly how everything is now that u can return to-almost like a snapshot.

You don't need to be s-off to flash roms, but some root apps might require it,and it has several advantages over being s-on,so I'd suggest when you're comfortable to attempt the downgrade.

Just holler if you have more questions :)

I'm really concerned about some info that I have on the internal drive(teaching material, PowerPoints, etc) and on my SD card(specifically my photos and whatnot)...how does flashing ROMs affect data like this? Without having to wait for all of that to copy via USB to my desktop what is the best way to secure this info?

I haven't run TiBU yet, should I go under batch and "Backup all user apps and systems data"?

Also, when I plug my phone in as a disk drive I don't see a /root folder. Should I be able to? Where exactly would I place the PB31IMG file?

*EDIT* What about music, ringtone files, etc? This is what scares me. Losing some of this stuff.

Offically downgraded, rooted and s-off! Had to flash the S-Off tool. According to unrevoked this is the only way to gain s-off.

For some reason my Titanium Backup did not back up ANY of my apps... Not sure why this is as it said backup was successful when I ran it. Now when I go into restore next to restore all apps with the data there is 0 there. WTF >.<

Do not backup any system data. Only user apps.

Everything stored on the SD or internal memory should be safe. Go ahead and back it up for some peace of mind, but you wont have to do it every time.

Root=top level,i.e. not inside any folders :)

OK.

I downloaded and manually moved the CM7 update to my sd card. ROM manager wouldn't work.

The file is update-cm-7.1.0-Inc-signed.zip I believe. If I go into CMW>apply update from sdcard this should open and install CM7, yes?

*EDIT* I need to rename it to update only, yes?

*EDIT2* I did that. As I type the arrow is going round and round the CM7 logo.

*EDIT3* Aaannnddd I believe I am in a bootloop.

*EDIT4* Pulled the battery and tried rebooting and reapplying the update several times. Am currently wiping the cache and retrying again. If this doesn't work how do I get my stock phone back?

*EDIT5* Didn't work. Went to the back-up. Hopefully my phone comes back.

*EDIT6* Well, at least my phone is back to normal.

When I am attempting to put in the first command line of cd c:\mini-adb_inc, it keeps saying cannot find the specified path. The command prompt shows c:\users\username. I cannot figure out how to just change the command prompt to just c:. I put the mini adb files directly on the root of the c drive but I have a feeling the issue is with the fact that I cannot change to the correct directory. Any help is needed please

read carefully the directions in the fist post, look at the copy of my session to see what it should look like.

you need to unzip(or extract if you prefer that term) the mini-adb_inc.zip file.

and put the unzipped folder onto the root(not inside folders) of your c drive. chage to the mini-adb_inc directory with cd c:\mini-adb_inc and your command promt should change accordingly. no where does it say to change the prompt to "just c" ;)

if you still have trouble, provide a copy/paste of your command window as described in the 1st post.

That's what I did. I put all of the files from the unzipped folder right on the C drive

at this point, you need to slow down a lil,and venture out into the forum. there is a TON of good info on how to wipe and flash roms, and make and restore backups. please dont be offended, but flashing roms tutorial is a lil beyond the scope of this thread.

read, read, read. start a new thread in ATR if youre still confused or dont quite find the answers youre looking for. there are alot of knowledgeable folks that can help you,but they are not seeing your questions here in this thread. :)

so create a folder on the root of the c drive and name it "mini-adb_inc"
and then put those individual files in that folder?

yes. if thats how you want to do it.

typically, when you right click on a .zip file, and click extract,it will unzip the folder, and create an identicle,non-zipped folder. you can then copy/paste or drag/drop this folder from wherever it was on your PC to the root of C.

windows 7 will natively unzip some .zip folders, others may need utility such as "7 zip"

if for some reason your files are not ending up in an unzipped folder that you can copy or move, then create a new folder on the root of C and move the files into it.

the end result is that you have to have an unzipped, normal folder called "mini-adb_inc" on the root of C that contains the files from the .zip that you downloaded.

hope that clears it up. :)
