Root [How To] Root 2.3.4/downgrade and Get S-off

My apologies. When I read the following;

I was looking in the PB31IMG.zip folder rather than the recovery-clockwork....PB31IMG.zip folder. Apparently reading instructions is not my forte. :o

So I shouldn't worry about the fact the Windows seems to think the PB31IMG.zip file is corrupt? Just go ahead and place it on the root of the SD card at the appropriate point in the instructions?

As long as the md5 sum matches, you should be fine :)

Successfully rooted and s-off! Scotty, thanks for your help--repeatedly clearing cache did it for me. Also, I'm kind of new to actually posting to forums (as opposed to just finding information that is already up on them), and it is so cool that people just help each other out. Feeling good about my phone and the world....

Absolutely HUUUGGGEEEE thanks to Scotty85 & Gkinsella2!!! I just rooted my Dinc running 2.3.4 from my MacBook, am currently creating a backup, and will be downgrading later today (hopefully!). Never could have done it without the link for the proper Unrevoked version link in Scotty's post and even with that wasn't going to bother trying anything without the clear terminal instructions in Gkinsella's post! Again, HUGE thanks guys!

This will be my first experimentation with Terminal so hopefully I don't kill my computer and phone at once!

Ok I am a noob. I only have my droid incredible for 1 more month before I get my upgrade. I cannot figure this out. I have downloaded clockwork and unrevoked and everthing but unrevoked will only run for a few seconds then say failure

i assume you are trying to root 2.3.4? you are running the 3.22 download, correct?

disable/uninstall htc sync, pda net,and anything else that has the ability to communicate with the phone. lots of folks have had luck after much fustration simply by moving to a different PC or laptop that has never had any phone files, drivers,or programs on it.

failing that, you might search the forum, and put up a post if you cant find answers. unrevoked has been the root standard for the inc for a long time, and im sure youll get lots of good advice in making it work if you post up in a new thread. lots of very knowledgable folks are simply not seeing the questions here :)

Hello. ANOTHER noob here. This is my first post. I am a little confused about a downgrade to 2.2...Im currently on Android 2.2 so do I do everything else on this thread to get the gingerbread update? I am rooted on the stock ROM. I do occasionally see the update pop-up but it has never worked so now Im on here trying to figure it out. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Best thing for you woukd be to flash the forever patch in recovery to become s-off,if youre not allready.

Then, simply flash a gb rom in recovery. :)

I just restarted my phone into Recovery and it says "INCREDIBLE XD SHIP S-OFF" so Im guessing im good there. So I guess where im confused is, what part of this thread do I use to upgrade to gingerbread? Sorry, im not too familiar with the terms as far as flash :/ I have loaded CM7 on my phone before so is it similar to that??

Can do this if you want to go the official route:
http://androidforums.com/incredible...ally-install-gingerbread-ota-s-if-rooted.html

Or like Scotty said, just download a GB rom and install like you did cm7.

There is a couple official GB rooms listed in the rom subsection of this forum if you are looking to keep HTC sense. ROMs are phone specific.

CM7 is also based off gingerbread.

if youre getting a screen that says clockwork mod recovery v5.0.2.0 then youre almost there! have you checked to see if the superuser app is in your app drawer? the process may have completed, despite the error message.

if the su app is indeed missing,no worry, just grab the superuser .zip file in the other sticky(regain root with s-off) and flash that in clockwork mod recovery. you will need to place it on the root of your sd card, then use the menu options in clockwork to flash it(wipe cache and dalvik cache for good measure). you will navigate clockwork with the optic trackpad thingy. push it to select(not the power button ;))

once youve successfully flashed superuser and hes working and grantiing permissions, you can continue on to get s-off :)
Thanks so much dude

adb reboot bootloader this will boot your phone to "fastboot" select "bootloader" with the power button.

hopefully what you will see now,is a blue status bar as your phone finds the PB31IMG,unpacks it,checks it,then asks if youd like to update. select yes to update with the volume up rocker. if youve never installed a full ruu in hboot,it will take a few minutes,so dont panic. place the phone gently down somewhere where it wont fall and spit out the battery. let it do its thing. push power to reboot when prompted.

let the phone fully boot, then place in disk drive mode and immediately delete PB31IMG from your sd card,as it will interefere with running unrevoked forever.
Ok, I'm working on a MAC but I don't think that really matters. I went through all of the steps in Terminal successfully (at least I think they were successful) before realizing that I had to re-format my SD card (I know, I should have checked sooner but I thought I knew it was alright...). When I get to the part quoted above, after the blue bar processes and it checks PB31IMG.zip, it says
"Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No"

Do I have to re-do all of the terminal code because my memory card wasn't properly formatted?

Edit: Yup, that was the problem. I went through the terminal commands again, and it is currently installing the 'update' back to version 2.2! I left this post here and edited it for the benefit of anyone else that might run into the same problem. Hope that's ok.

thanks for posting your solution, its not only ok,its what i would prefer folks to do when they have an issue and solve it themselves before someone can get back to you with the answer. indeed it may help someone in the future.

just to add a little more info,it failed the first time becasue the misc image failed to get rewritten with the modified one to allow the downgrade. hard to say wich step may not have gone quite right without looking at it.

glad you got it working.

I am now running 2.2 with S-off! (for any other noobs, to check if I had S-off I just booted to HBOOT with Volume Down/Power and at the top of the HBoot screen it says "S-OFF" or (S-ON"). I tried to load a rom (from xda developers) onto it to flash last night, but it says my memory card is full. I checked, and sure enough there is a ton of information still on my SD Card. It didn't dawn on my until this morning that shouldn't the sd card have been wiped when I reformatted (using disk utility on my mac in case that matters)? I am thinking that I might just delete everything from the SD card? Are there any specific files or anything that I can't delete?

When I go into Setting>Apps>Manage Apps, it says there aren't any on my SD card, but I when I browse into the sd card either using Astro file explorer or through connection to laptop I have a whole slew of app folders? Are these just relics from having had the apps installed on the sd card previously?

Edit: I went through the folders on the root of my SD card one-by-one and totalled their sizes, along with the files on the root of the SD card (i.e. not in subfolders) and I came up with a grand total of 0.4GB +/-. Both my phone and my computer (with phone mounted as a drive) think that there is 1.65GB of data on the SD card and only 184 MB free???? Do I need to re-format the card again to wipe it clean? Will doing this cause any problems with my phone's ability to function??? Thanks again!

Ok so I have got to the downgrading part now. I did all of step 3 and checked all the sums. Then I opened the command window and did the following...

C:\DOCUME~1\CSHARP>cd c:\mini-adb_inc
Invalid directory

That is what I keep getting and have been stuck on it for about a hour or 2 now! Can someone please help me out?! Thanks

Edit: I am using Windows XP

imp,

If you have ASTRO file manager installed on your phone, select Menu - Preferences - Look and Feel

Make sure that "Show Hidden Files" has a check mark in the box. Unix and Unix-like systems (including OS X and even Linux (Android runs on a Linux kernel)) denote hidden files by starting the filename with a period (dot).

When you delete files on the SD card using your Mac, the file is not actually removed until you "empty the trash" (obviously the card has to be mounted in order to do this). Instead they are made into "hidden files" by pre-appending the file name with a dot. Mount the SD card on your Mac, then empty the trash on the Mac. This should free up the space.

WARNING: configuration files and directories are also often "hidden" (or "dot") files. You may not want to delete files on your SD card simply because they are hidden.

I'm not sure what this means...

Thanks! I had figured this out at lunchtime after talking to a co-worker who is also rooted. Thanks for explaining how to view hidden files with Astro though- I had looked for it and couldn't find it so I just turned them on on my PC and cleared out the Trashes folder from there.

Thanks again!

Sorry, those were ascii scissors to indicate that I was cutting out a large chunk of your text. Old habits die hard.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out! I would have explained how to make OS X display hidden files by default, but I don't have a Mac in front of me and I'm having trouble remotely logging-in to the old powerbook at home to test any instructions I could find online.

You have to change directiories all the way back to the root of the c drive first... So type the following without the quotes "cd .." until you get just a c:\ prompt, then you can cd c:\mini-adb_inc

This is the first time I've tried to root my phone. I've been working for two days now to try to root my dinc 2.3.4. I appreciate all the work people have done, and obviously there is a lot of things that have to be worked out for each user. I'm about to give up, and I just don't want to look through 17 pages of posts to see if there's an answer for me. I followed scotty85's directions, but when it tried to verify the pb31img file it stopped with "Main version is older! Update fail!" And I'm not sure the custom recovery is working either, as when I try to do anything I just get the orange circle under the hat icon and it never changes. If someone could help me, or just tell me if I'll ever get this thing rooted, that would be great. If you could direct me to a particular thread that solves this issue, that would also be great. I don't mean to ask repetitive questions, but it's approaching the point that it's not worth it. Thanks to everyone for their work

Sounds like you have either left mini-adb_inc zipped up,or possibly don't have it on your c drive :)

Edit: im on the phandroid app and just noticed there were more replys. looks like sdraw got it for you

These answers are here,I promise. :)

In a nutshell: main version older means mistake somewhere in adb commands. Try again, get a copy of the cmd window as described in he first post

Recovery is working, use optic trackpad thingy to select, not power button
