Root [How To] Root 2.3.4/downgrade and Get S-off

These answers are here,I promise. :)

In a nutshell: main version older means mistake somewhere in adb commands. Try again, get a copy of the cmd window as described in he first post

Recovery is working, use optic trackpad thingy to select, not power button

Ok, thanks, I'll get on it this morning. I should get some kind of response for each adb command, right? If hit enter and it just returns me to the prompt, then something's not right?

My session in the first post will show you the output for each input :)

I'm sure you've answered this before, but I've looked through several pages of posts and I haven't seen the answer. Let me show you what I did wrong before:
You posted this on page one:

cd /data/local
chmod 0755 /data/local/flash_image

cd /data/local
./flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd0.img

you can now downgrade back to 2.2,so you can run "unrevoked forever" to regain s-off

I typed "./flash_image misc/sdcard/mtd0.img". I didn't notice the space between misc and the /. when I typed it the right way it updated successfully. However: although the update took, and I am rooted, S is still ON. I noticed you gave a tip for that problem but I can't find the answer on the public:forever page you linked to. Sorry if I'm repeating, but I'm so close I can taste it. :)

Ok, now I'm frustrated again, and I still can't find answers in the 17 pages of posts. Hopefully scotty85 is still around and feels like helping one more noob. At this point I am running Android 2.2. My S is still ON. I tried to run unrevoked again but it said it could not root, is my firmware too new? Don't see how it could be when it's 2.2. Also, when I run unrevoked for the second time, using 3.32, should I change the recovery to the one I used with version 3.22, or let unrevoked run its Clockwork recovery? Thanks to all. I'm going to step away from the phone now and wait for help.

It is sometimes neccessary to run unrevoked 3.32 twice when rooting 2.2. Every inc I've personally rooted has failed the first time with that same error.

You're almost there :)

Edit: you're prolly fine letting 3.32 install a recovery, but I would prolly go ahead and change it like you did the first time. You'll then be on the best/newest clockwork.

This is kind of weird...
I decided to start over. So after using the 3.22 flash, I had a chance to install what I believed to be the s-off patch from the unrevoked page. I tried it, and it worked. I have flashed with 3.22 and I have S-OFF. Do I need to do anything else? What the hell do I do next?

Hey guys, what should I do if I don't get the right number sequence when I type in the zergRush in the the command prompt? I am getting 4a32187446c284c2b975845f3ab9ffc4 back when I type that in. The other 3 number/letter sequences are all right. Please help! Trying to root this phone has been consuming my life the past 3 days!

Congratulations! Glad you got it

Next,I would either restore your gingerbread backup,or flash a custom rom of your chosing, as you are now on froyo and its. Matter of time before he update pestering starts ;)

As far as anything else,nope... s-off was the ultimate goal and you wont lose it unless you remove it purposefully :) you're free to flash, root, and rom!

That prolly is fine. There have prolly just been further updates to zergrush that I haven't accounted for. Ill check it out later and update the OP.

Sorry for the confusion :o

Okay, so I should just be able to continue on with the rest of it? or should I wait to try it after you let me know? haha thanks man

Check the md5 of your whole zipped zergrush download. I just downloaded it on my phone and got the following:

55ac17ad7d8c93583f19afb9c1138dc2

Ill see if I can extract zergrush, not sure if I can or not. You should be safe, worse case would be it just doesn't work if the download is bad.

Yup looks like I got the same thing: 4a32187446c284c2b975845f3ab9ffc4
(Shoulda just checked that for you in the 1st place :o)

Continue on,sir

I'm running CM7, like it very much. I never did get unrevoked 3.32 to root for me by itself. Here's what worked: version 3.22, then the PB1IMG update, then the S-OFF patch while I was still in recovery, then I went ahead and ran 3.32 just in case (of what I don't know). I would recommend the custom recovery, as you suggested. It worked for me. I appreciate everyone helping out, especially scotty85. I've learned a ton in the last week. Yes, the update was already trying to mess with me before I installed the new rom. I can see why a lot of people like this. Too bad I can't do this for me Kindle Fire (hint, in case there's anyone out there).

Alright I went back and tried tonight and for some reason, in the prompt, it says listed devices and then there is a blank space below it. So, for some reason it is not recognizing my phone. I have everything downloaded and on the phone and the debugging is checked. Let me know if you have any advice..thanks!

was it working before? try unplugging and replugging in different ports with different cables. try toggling usb debugging of,then back on.

sometimes a reboot of the pc and/or phone will fix prollems.

other than that, must be a driver issue... try reinstalling the drivers as described on unrevokeds wiki :)

I am at this step
[-click on "file" in the corner of the relfash window
-click custom recovery
-navigate to,and select your "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc" image and select it. at the bottom of your reflash app window, it should now say "recovery:custom" and "waiting for device"
-make sure usb debugging is checked ON in settings/applications/development.
-plug in your phone and place it in charge only mode. assuming you installed the drivers correctly, unrevoked 3.22 will start. let it do its thing. it will reboot a couple of times. when its finished,it may leave you on a blank screen. if this is the case, pull the battery and reboot.]

But unrevoked 3.22 keeps failing saying:

root device "/sbin/sh: getprop: not found"

I have searched a million posts on this but none of the fixes seem to fit my situation. When I tried to bypass all this and run unrevoked3 - one click painless root and reflash it told me that my firmware was too new.

I am just confused:
Using incredible 2.3.4
radio baseband 5.10.07.07
windows xp

looking for advice on what direction to go? I was able to root my incredible 2 but now that i am trying to root my wife's phone I am stuck. makes me look like I dont know what i am doing - which i dont, but SHE doesnt know that yet! (maaaarge, dont make me look bad in front of the money!)

So I've read through just about all the posts here and remember someone saying that the downgrade and/or switching to S-off will require the phone to be erased. It is not mentioned much, only once or twice, bit seems like a fairly imoortant caveat, do I want to confirm whether it's true before I start the whole process from step 1. Thanks on advance.

Oh and I have an HTC inc with 2.3.4. Build# 4.06.605.43

no idea what that means. id uninstall htc sync, pda net,and anything else that has the ability to interact with your phone. download 3.22 again, and make sure youve unzipped it before running the application inside.

alot of the folks that have had issuse with unrevoked 3.22 or 3.32 have solved them by useing a completley different computer thats never had any phone stuff installed on it.

failing that, may want to search the forum,or put up a post... unrevoked has been the inc root standard for quite some time, and there are alot of smart folks here that just arent seeing your question on this thread.

yes,the downgrade reequires flashing an older firmware, wich will wipe all your data. i said this in the directions inthe first post:
once you get "successfully flashed clockwork recovery" boot to it and make a backup, since downgrading to get s-off WILL wipe all your data. boot back into the operating system.
;)

so as long as you are able to root with unrevoked 3.22 then you will be able to make a nandroid backup, and pick up exactly where you left off after downgrading,re-rooting and achieving s-off :)

I figured I would receive some witty quip and/or smiley as a result of my question :D but sometimes you just need to confirm these things.

Also, unrevoked worked. Thanks. However, I should mention that at the end of the process, while still in Clockwork Recovery, I received this message on my phone:

Code:
ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
Waiting for SD to mount (20s)
SD Card mounted

glad you got it  dont forget to make yourself a backup in clockwork if you want to return to the factory GB rom with everything set up.

alternatively, just get titanium backup, and its prokey and do a batch backup of all user apps. this will make setting up a new rom considerably easier if you intend to try something else :)

huh, i am sure surprised that nobody else ran into my problem. i was starting to think that it has something to do with the fact that i rooted my inc2 on the same computer, but i uninstalled the other drivers before starting the inc1 root. I dont have pda net or htc sync installed but damned if that htc/verizon popup (webpage & windows message) doesnt come up everytime the phone reboots during the attempted root.
i have a macbook as well, but have been avoiding trying to root the phone on it because i dont trust how the htc and mac stuff will play together. I will get back to you after my next try.
thnx

Dammit!!!!!! I am so annoyed at this. I cant get this damn thing rooted. Ihave been at this for days and days and days and hours and hours and hours. I keep getting
Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?

i have searched forum after forum and tried so many damn things. Nothing is working. I cant be the only one to have this happen. I know people are like - its so easy you cant screw it up - but when the software crashes that is not me screwing up a step. I found the site to change your radio baseband version but that site says you need to get root with unrevoked3 first. mother! if i could do that i wouldnt be there.

i wouldnt be so pissed if it were my phone, but this is my wife's phone. so if it goes belly up and keeps flashing all these damn UDI mismatch messages and starts having problems i will have to inherit a inc1 that is f'd up instead of my inc2 that is freshly rooted.

what can i do?

You are still on 2.3.4?

Are you running the unrevoked 3.22 (the version downloaded in the first post of this thread)?
