Root [How To] Root 2.3.4/downgrade and Get S-off

I rooted my phone a while back. My wife wants me to root hers. She got the 2.3.4 OTA, so I'm going to follow the directions to do so. My question is... will downgrading back to 2.2 wipe her phone before I can do a Nandroid and Titanium Backup?

You'll be able to do a nandroid before proceeding with the downgrade steps (which will wipe the phone). Just pay careful attention to the first few steps that instruct you how to replace the recovery.

OK, then, just to make sure I understand. The purpose of the downgrade is just to be able to turn S-OFF. Then restoring the backup will bring the phone back to the previous operating system, but with S-OFF. At that point, I'll be free to flash any other ROM, correct (I'm thinking of using GingerSense for my wife)?

yo are 100% correct. once you turn s-off,it will stay that way until you purposely turn it back to s-on :)

after the downgrade, you will be on the froyo radio as well. it may be to your advantage to update the radio back to the GB radio after restoring your GB backup. you will do this by installing it in hboot, just like you installed the dowgrade RUU(rename PB31IMG,put on sd card, boot into hboot)

New issue. Main instructions failed, Unrevoked said the firmware was too new. Downloaded ZeroRush for the alternate instructions, but how can I do a nandroid backup when the phone is not rooted yet?

EDIT: Here's what happened. I ran Unrevoked 3.22, as the instructions said. It pushed the recovery, rebooted, then rebooted into recovery. When it rebooted into recovery, it gave me a message of "Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try again." I tried to find out what that meant, and discovered there was Unrevoked 3.32. So I tried that, and that's where I got the "too new" message.

EDIT: Got it rooted. Apparently, you need to go into File > uncheck Disable Security on Phone before you run Unrevoked 3.22. I did that and it worked!

I have no idea what happened, but after performing these steps, I have no mobile data. No 3G or 1X, so the only way I can get data is over Wifi.

I have tried doing it all over again, and I still have no mobile data.

I have tried this with the software that is on the phone and also with 3-4 different ROM's, and none have mobile data.

Any help?

May seem obvious, but have you gone into the settings and made sure mobile data is turned on? If it is on, try toggling airplane mode, if that doesn't work try running the gingerbread RUU found at PvilleComp's | Droid Incredible Resource Site <<this will unroot you but as long as you achieved s-off it is easy to root again.

I have verified mobile data is on, updated my PRL, tried toggling airport mode.

I will try the RUU

A little more info (Haven't for the RUU thing yet). When I go to about phone/network it shows that my mobile network type is "CDMA - EvDo Rev. A" which shows i am getting the 3G signal, but for some reason it still doesn't show 3G in the status bar and I cannot go to any site via the browser nor can I access data from any app.

Could also just try flashing a different radio. You can get them from the same site I linked above.

Already tried that. Thanks

When i went to Wireless and Networks, "mobile network" grayed out and says "Turning on...". So it looks like it is just trying to work, but isn't

The additional modems on that link you privided are only coming accross ar 9MB files while the Froyo modem in the original post is 172MB, so I assume the ones on that link are bad

How many steps have you completed? If you've gotten to s-off,just run the ruu. If you haven't done that, continue on with the downgrade and s-off,then run the gb ruu if data hasn't started working allready in froyo :)

Hello,

My name is Erik, and I would really appreciate some focused help.

I have followed per your instruction and achieved a rooted droid incredible. I've flashed 4+ ROMs and have backups of each however, I am STILL S-ON.

I've loaded what I need to on the phone's SD card(formated to FAT32 remaned download). I've downloaded and extracted to my PCs (windows xp) C: drive.

Here's where my problem is. I load the command window (start: run: command)
I found in the forums to make only the C: appear in the command window type "cd .." until only the C: appears (Ive done that success fully) However, when I proceed to type in the code in the command window I get a response (Invalid directory)
I get that response every time I try..

I seriously would make cookies for you for the rest of your life if someone here could work with me on this to achieve S-OFF.

Yes, I have spent multiple hours searching the forums here and searches on google to establish and fix. Which I have not found. So here I am.

Thank you for your help,

you intelligent nerds. :D

If you are getting an "invalid directory" error, it means exactly that, you are attempting to access a directory (folder) that doesn't exist. The prompt needs to state the location of the folder where you have the adb folder before you start entering the commands.

Did you just extract mini adb to your C:\? Or leave it in the folder called mini adb? It should be left in a folder.

So if you are typing
Code:
cd c:\mini-adb_inc
And getting an "invalid directory", it means you need to create the folder mini-adb_inc and place the adb files into it.

Ok, I am not sure where to go. My phone is back to running 2.2, I have root, but I still can't get mobile data. Also, when I try to install a different radio via HBOOT, it fails and says something along the lines of that it is not a valid image. It is also S-on.

I have re-downloaded it multiple times, checked the md5, but still nothing. I am not sure what the next step to do it.

It just gave me the prompt to update my phone, so I thought doing that would put my phone back to a state where I could start this all over again. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything when I press reboot and install. It just went back to my home screen.

I have gone through that link, and don't see anything saying RUU, so I am not sure what that means or what to do in order to use it

EDIT: Got my phone back to stock with working mobile data using the image I found here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227279

I have read through a number of these pages, but not all 19 of them! ;)

Is the information in the first post of this thread accurate to root my Incredible?

If it is not, I think this whole thread needs cleaned up. Or the admins, etc..., whomever they may be seriously need to open a forum for this so that there is not so much info randomly thrown into one thread.

I would really like to get my phone rooted, but do not have the time to be reading through 19 pages of a thread to try and find the information.

Hopefully someone can help me out.

The first few posts contain ALL the info you need. If you follow the directions EXACTLY you should not have any issues. :)

The other 18 pages of posts contain issues people ran into (vast majority of which are from not reading the directions) and a good number of posts are people offering their thanks for the instructions and letting us know they were successful.

So bottom line is there is no need to read through the whole thread, just the first few posts :)
Thanks for joining the forums and feel free to post if you have any issues.

And just to be sure, this will work for my Droid Incredible
