Root [How To] Root 2.3.4/downgrade and Get S-off

Backing up through the ROM Manager UI didn't work either. I think I will wait until the dust settles and someone figures out how to get s-off with the s-lcd.

you get s-off by downgrading to 2.2,then running unrevoked forever. you dont need a working recovery to do the rest of the procedure, you just wont have the luxury of being able to restore a backup after youre finished, you will have to flash a stock GB rom in recovery and re-set it up. titanium backup will make this immensely easier, and should work fine since you have root access.

what happened when you tried to backup with rom manager?

ive added some instructions to the OP. you could run 3.22 again, and point the reflash tool to clockwork 5.0.2.0 and see if that works. i have a feeling it will :)

Mine is slcd and I had the same issue as you. I didn't make a nandroid and went straight to the downgrade. I am s off now

I may try that. It seems risky though, and this is my only phone. Originally I just wanted to keep Gingerbread and get root. I would really like to get rid of the OTA update and be able to make a backup though...

There is a rooted debloated rom over at xda if you want that. If you aren't comfortable then wait. Its all good either way.

Yeah that could work. I've used custom ROMs on my Eris and my Droid X in the past. The thing is, I really rely on the phone, so its not ok for the camera to not work or my work e-mail to not work. But if its just stock, with the Verizon crap gone, I am good with that. So maybe I will just skip that step and go to the downgrade tomorrow.

you can also try this,if youd be more comfortable downgrading after making a backup. run unrevoked 3.22 again, with the following additional steps:

1.5) EXPERIMENTAL OPTION if you want to try and get the latest clockwork recovery on your phone, especially if your an slcd user, please take thes additional steps:
-open the recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc_PB31IMG download. extract it first if you need to. inside there is an image called "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc". right click on this image, then click "copy". navigate to a directory you can easily find it,then right click in that directory, then "paste". alternatively, you can drag it from the extracted folder to a convienient spot(i personally like to drag files around, but its fine either way).
-use your md5 summer to verify the md5 of just the image, not the whole .zip. it should be: ea382ca5809cb872d0582aa22741d592

*when you run unrevoked to root in the next step do the following before plugging in the phone:
-click on "file" in the corner of the relfash window
-click custom recovery
-navigate to,and select your "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc" image and select it. at the bottom of your reflash app window, it should now say "recovery:custom"
**please report what happens when you do this. we need to know if it affects getting root access, and if it successfully installs CW 5.0.2.0 and elimnates the black screen in place of recovery prollem for slcd users. thanks for any feedback!

hey Scotty sorry to be sending you a private message as well, thought my first one was. Lol so what happened was after I ran unrevoked (touchpad changed it to unprovoked) my screen was black with white lines on both sides. I tried a battery pull but it keeps restarting and will just bootloop. Anyway to sbf back to 2.3.4 them just retry it over or am I just SOL? Hboot doesn't allow me to factory reset, recover, etc. Thanks man I'm no rookie rooter, recently had my X stolen, bought the incredible from a buddy and of course it was loaded with 2.3.4. Please let me know if you can help. Thank you.

got this as a pm,i hope you dont mind me bringing it here,so that others may benefit from whatever we figure out.also, the more minds we have working on it,the more likely we are to find the solution :)

as im understanding, youve only done step 2,and are still on 2.3.4? you have not entered any adb commands yet, correct?

can you verify the md5 of the 322reflash package you downloaded? let us know if it matches the one on the front page.

first, describe the bootloop... how far does it get? then does it hang,or does it go back to a certain point of the boot sequence? if its just "sticking" or hanging somewhere, how long are you giving it? if youre pulling the batter after just a couple minutes, you may just not be giving it enuff time. id try giving it at least 15 minutes before determining that its not going to boot.

also, try leaving the battery out for a few minutes before trying to power on normally.

if it does happen to boot after giveing it a few minutes, check for the superuser app in your drawer. if its there, procede with the guide to downgrade :)

i hate to reccomend running one of the 2.3.4 PB31IMG or RUU files if we dont have to,as im not 100% sure that the prollem with my spare inc wasnt caused by that(see the misc image thread for details).

has anyone ran one of these and can verfiy that there are no issues? if so,can you provide a link to the one you used. id feel alot better reccomending something that someone else has run and can verify there were no prollems afterward.

anyone have any other ideas for the bootloop?

When I run the command:

adb push flash_image /data/local/

I get an error that I have more than one device connected. When I run adb devices, I see the same device listed twice, one says "device" and one says "offline". When I unplug the phone, I only see the "offline" one.

Never mind - killing the adb process and restarting fixed it

Awesome...I am now rooted with S-OFF!! I guess now I install ROM manager again because Clockwork still doesn't work. Then I need to find that debloated ROM.

Thanks everyone!

Awesome! What unrevoked did you run to root 2.2?

With s-off you should have no prollem installing the newer clockwork ;)

I downloaded the newest unrevoked and it worked fine. Yeah, I just installed ROM manager, got the new Clockwork, and I am backing up the stock 2.2 rom now (mostly as a test).

Any idea where the Gingerbread-Bloat ROM is?

I figure its at least been 20 minutes. How long should I wait before I start worrying? If it goes some ridiculous amount of time, do you pull the battery or something?

No, its not doing anything at the bottom of the screen. All I see is the hat and the circle. And that picture appears to be static.

I bet you pushed power to select. Push it again and see if the menus come back. Then use the home soft key(I think) to select menu options

OK, I got impatient and pulled the battery. I am going a backup that I started from the ROM Manager UI now, and its doing stuff. The one that I aborted was from going into recovery and selecting backup/restore. I don't think I ever picked anything after that, it just went to the hat.

I booted into recovery from the ROM Manager UI and nothing seems to work. If I navigate to any menu option with the power button or the soft keys, it just brings up that picture and no words and doesn't appear to be doing much of anything. The menu key works as "back".

Try the optical track ball thingy to navigate/select. I dont use clockwork so I'm not much help :(

Haha...I forgot about the trackball. Not used to having it. I will try that at some point today if I get a chance. I was able to install a ROM through the ROM Manager UI. After I get it setup, I will try Clockwork again.

Yep, that's the key (for the Incredible):

Hboot
Power button to select, trackpad button does nothing

Clockwork
Trackpad button to select menu items, power button brings you back one menu.

Hat w/ orange circle happens when accidentally hitting power button to select. When you're on the root menu, there is nowhere to go back to so it shows that icon indefinitely.

Wait a second here... You downloaded the newest unrevoked from their website and it worked?? You were running the gingerbread update that came out OTA??
