Root [How To] Root 2.3.4/downgrade and Get S-off

My phone was once rooted and Unrevoked Forever had been used. Then I got the OTA which has cause myriad of problems. I have tried Hard Resets and soft and I cannot remove files or apps. I remove them or erase everything and when I reboot it is all back. I tried both methods. The first method I couldn't get the img to load. the ZeroG method got the img to load, but now the phone is stuck in reboot. It shows the droid red eye, then reboots, Quietly Brilliant, then says "Droid" and back to eye. Over and over.

If you had already used unrevoked forever and then accepted an OTA, all you need to follow are these steps:

Once you have a recovery, you can then flash any rom to get your phone booted up.

My friends, to the author of this post and to those he has given credit to, you all rock! I've been wanting to jailbreak my HTC Incredible forever and I just ran these suggestions and it worked perfectly.

Well done oh Jedi Master's, well done indeed...

Sincerely,

Brett

I used unrevoked3, following this guide:

Updated: Root the HTC Droid Incredible - Technology - Jonamerica.com

for my Incredible, and I wasn't sure what to do, because the instructions don't say what to do after running Unrevoked. It just says to wait, but if I wait, my phone just sits there in the bootloader menu, asking if I want to "start the update". So I said, yes, figuring that must be the recovery, and it wiped all my data (even though people said Unrevoked doesn't wipe your data), and didn't root, and after I told it to reboot, Unrevoked is still just sitting there still "waiting for bootloader." It never said "Done" or anything like that. So, that was awesome. So, now I just tried it with this guide, and it sat there again, asking if I wanted to start the update, so I said yes, again. And it wiped my data, again. I guess I don't understand what I'm doing, or I'm following the instructions wrong. In the future, it would be nice to be able to root my phone without wiping everything.

Does anyone know of a guide that clearly explains how to do this? Or can someone just tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong? This is extremely frustrating, and I'm about to scrap the whole thing and just say, 'well, I guess I never have a rooted phone', because it's apparently impossible for someone like me.

Take a look at your SD card and remove the PB31IMG.zip that is on it... that's what is wiping your data, not unrevoked. :)

Following this guide is the ONLY way to root the incredible right now... well this and the other sticky in this forum that uses the HTCdev method (more complicated).

Well, damn. I thought I took that off of there, bc I remember you guys telling me to delete it after I was done. I wish I understood this stuff the way you do. :\

Thanks. :)

I'm confused...

Didn't we get you to s-off in this thread?

http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/526757-attempting-gain-root-htc-unlocked-bootloader.html

Why are you messing with unrevoked? All you need to do is follow the directions in the sticky to "regain root with s-off"

Or has something happened?

after unrevoked said it was done i accidentally pressed my phone's power button and now all it has shown on screen for the last half hour is a hat over some kind of gear. What should i do to fix this?

push power again ;)

power button takes you back a menu,or if youre on the main menu,it takes you to the hat.

select things with the optic trak pad thingy :)

Hi All...

I know this is probably covered here... but I see all kinds of info all over the Internet regarding this, and it's not all the same. I have the HTC Incredible, and I successfully rooted the phone yesterday using the instructions on page 1 of this thread (thank you!). Now every time I look at my phone, it's wanting to update to 4.08.605.2. And I mean every time! Anyway... I've seen a lot of "recommendations". Some say to delete a file, rename a file, modify a script in a file... being a newbie to this, I'm really confused as to what to do.

Do I let the phone do it's thing and install the update? Is there a ROM (I've never worked with ROMs or Kernels) that could be installed that eliminates these OTA pushes?

I was happy with the stock Incredible... I rooted because I thought it could do even better (better battery life, less bloatware, etc.) A long time ago, I "debranded" a Sony Ericson phone to gain access to the GPS chip (that everyone said didn't exist... but somehow did in the European marked). That gave me the chutzpah to try this.

Anyway... I'm back to this original thread, as this is the one that got me rooted to begin with, with the very clear directions. BTW, I still have all the stock programs, and have Titanium Backup Pro, Root Explorer, ROM Manager, Astro File Manager, and Superuser Permissions.

Thank you for following my long post! Any help, or pointing to some distinct instructions would surely be appreciated! :)

P.S. I did see a thread here about regaining root... but that was for after accepting the update, which I didn't. I'm going to go back and read that more carefully. Thanks again, guys.

Yikes! Another edit. I forgot to mention, if you didn't figure it out... I do have S-off.

if you have s-off,theres no harm in letting the phone update. s-off will remain, you can use the other guide here to reinstall recovery and re-root.

id pretty strongly consider to simply install a custom rom based on the newest firmware.im sure there is one thats bsically stock, with a few enhancements, including the low space fix that plauged stock phones.

youll also want to somehow get back to the GB baseband. either install it as a PB31IMG,run an ruu,or let the phone OTA. any of those will get it back for you.

The best (easiest) solution is to install a stock gingerbread rom and install the gingerbread radio... I'll update this post later with links (should be able to find them in the rom subsection) if you can't find them (the gingerbread radio can be found here http://pvillecomp.com ) . You don't want to let the update notification you are getting to install or you will have to root again, although it is much easier since you have s-off.

You guys are FAST!!! Thank you!!! I'll wait a bit before proceeding. In the meantime, I have made sure I have all the proper files downloaded and available (as mentioned in the "regaining root" thread after accepting OTA).

Hmmmm... interesting thing happened. I decided to give in to the OTA and follow the re-root steps. The phone indicated the update would be starting. But then it went to the home screen and everything is as it was. I'm still at 2.2. Apparently the update didn't happen. I looked at the "system updates" screen and it says "Your system is currently up to date", where before it indicated I had the update waiting for installation.

So do I leave as is... "well enough alone"... hoping to not get bugged about OTAs again? Or should I look for the stock Gingerbread ROM for installation?

Thanks!

my apologies... i actually forgot one inportant step in the OTA process. you need to be running the stock recovery. clockwork cannot install the factory OTAs(matter of fact it blocks them)

at this point, you can leave well enuff alone if you wish, but i would prolly update your radio as a PB31IMG,and then flash the rom sdraw provided. :)

Oh well.... might have bricked the phone. I installed the radio with no problem. But when I tried to flash the ROM, it didn't work. Now when I turn on the phone, it just sits at the opening "HTC Incredible" screen and goes nowhere. None of the buttons appear functional. After I remove the battery and power down, then power up (with volume down button and power button), I will get 5 or 6 quick buzzes in succession. Then at other times, I will get the 'H' boot screen, that eventually goes to the clockwork screen. However, I am not able to select any of the menu items there.

I did perform a nandroid backup this morning. It is on the SD card as well as on my computer. I also did a Titanium Pro backup.

Am I bricked? Suggestions? Thanks!

When you are getting the buzzes...you are sure that you are hitting volume DOWN and not up? Because hitting volume UP and power will also cause the vibrations and only a battery pull gets you out of it.

For anyone who is running into the problem of "failed to copy 'mtd0.img' to '/sdcard/mtd0img': Permission denied" . . .

What worked for me was rather than just connecting as charge only was to instead first connect the phone as disk drive and then, without unplugging, switch to charge only.

Hope that helps someone.

sdraw... you may be right about why I was getting the buzzes. However, I haven't yet found a way to "unbrick" the phone. Seems that the methods I've seen require that the SD card at least be recognized or have some kind of access to the phone. The SD card doesn't seem to be recognized by the phone or by USB. Volume down and power take me to the HBoot screen, but nothing there fixes the phone. I wait long enough and it goes to the clockwork screen. None of the selections do anything there. They just take me to the hat icon and at that point I can press the power button which takes me back to the clockwork menu (again, can't do anything there), or I can pull the battery.

Oh well... might mean a trip to Verizon. So... what do I tell the Verizon techs... I messed it up trying to root? And what are the consequences? In your experience, can they "unbrick" a phone, or will I be purchasing a new one?

Hey... thanks for all your help guys. I do appreciate it, and I should have quit while I was ahead (rooted at 2.2). I have a tendency to plug away, and this time I guess I got bit!!

did you try running the froyo ruu? you can install it as a pb31img in hboot, or run a .exe file with the phone in fastboot.

You can also install a pb31img by following the directions in a thread called "an easier way to flash pb31img files"

I'll check out that thread, Scotty. I haven't tried those things. But I'm must be missing a fundamental point. If I can't get into the phone at all... can't establish a data connection... and the menu items do not work at HBoot, how can I install anything or run anything? Is this something that can be done if I remove the SD card and install on it?

I'm sorry for being so dense! I'm going to go back and read the thread you mentioned above.

I'll go back and try that. But how do I "place the phone in fastboot, put it in RUU mode" when the HBoot menus don't work, and after a minute or so, the clockwork menu comes up which doesn't appear to be operable?

I can see I'll be busy tonight trying this... that is unless you write and tell me to forget it! I hope I've learned my lesson! Although this is really the first device that I've truly boogered up! Thanks for your assistance. :-)

Wow! What a pest I am! I'm beginning to hate myself! lol

Don't know if this would tell you anything, but I've removed my SD card and read it in my card reader on my laptop. Everything is there and intact, including my backups.

OK... over and out! Thanks!
