Root [how-to] root: Gingerbread 2.3.3

Yes, shutting down the Revo screen and starting over will resume where it was and continue with the install. I now have a rooted DInc2! Thanks!
 
I can't get the super user file to download. I click on the link and after it counts down from 10 another tab opens in the browser but never downloads.
 
I am beginning to understand the reasoning for all the prep work required to rood this phone, but I want to verify: Is the downgrading of HBOOT necessary because that is where this phone stores the Security flag status? Does that even make sense? The Original Inc stored the status deep in the radio information, and rooting was a simple click (so nice...). But is this phone set up differently?
 
When i'm trying to install revolution i get "FAILED - Go have some Lemonade" and Windows error - USB not recognized, do you know how to fix this error ? I am using HTCDriver3.0.0.007.

Do you have Debugging on and the phone in charge only mode?

EDIT: Also verify you have fastboot unchecked.
 
Yes, i have them. Only think that i didn't make is factory reset

EDIT: Before i'm trying to root it I pass the activation using CDMA and now my Mobile Directory Number is 0000000000.

EDIT: My Software number is 1.34.605.4
Android version: 2.2.1
 
ok...So i've been trying for two afternoons to work all of this magic on a friend of mines Dinc2.....long story short after countless hours of searching the forums..both here and at XDA. here is a piece of info that was no where on either site that i discovered.

Don't try to do any of this through a VM of Windows running on a Mac.

I got it all done now. I ended up trying it on my Fiance's windows laptop....worked first try...smh...anywho

Here is the superuser .zip file (to get root, the software only gets S-OFF which allows root):

You need to install these HTC fastboot drivers before using the above program:

***Make sure that you have USB debugging turned 'ON' and Fastboot turned 'OFF'***

USB debugging:
Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging 'checked'

Fastboot:
Settings > Power > Fast boot 'unchecked'

During the process, the application will ask if you would like to download and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Go ahead and enter 'Y'. It will install CWM.

After the S-OFF process, reboot the phone. Add the superuser.zip file you downloaded to your sdcard, if you already haven't. Boot into recovery and flash the superuser.zip.

CONGRATULATIONS! You're now rooted and ready to begin flashing! Don't forget to do a NANDROID backup as well!

hello im sorry but will this work on a phone that has android version 2.3.3 and baseband, kernel and htc version 2.1?? sorry but im new at this things...
 
My device says HBOOT version is 0.98 not 0.97 like the website says. Will my root still work?

On a second note, has anyone done a thorough analysis of the security of the Revolutionary root tool? How do I know if using it does not send my personal data somewhere? I'm a bit worried about the security of my device when using this tool.

I didn't see anything that indicated this. But when you downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3 does it also downgrade the HBOOT from 0.98 to 0.97?

Also, which serial number do I need to enter on the revolutionary website? I can't find anything on my phone that indicates it, or can it be found in the device settings?

And my question about security still remains. How do I know that this revolutionary product is secure? How do I know if it is safe for me to put on my phone and does not enable any "backdoors" so to speak. I mean don't get me wrong, I used unrevoked to root my original Droid Incredible, but I wasn't as informed of the details behind these methods at the time. I understand that it was created by many trusted developers and individuals within the Android community, however I am just wondering if anyone has done a full review of the code for holes such as this.

Lastly, thanks for the quick feedback, I appreciate the help.

I'm looking for a software number like 5.10.605.9 or 6.01.605.05. They use different techniques to root.

There have been no reports of any problems with Revolutionary.

After I typed: adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.sh --root

The phone did the red Icon, then I had to reboot it by taking the battery out because Power+VolUP+VolDOWN does NOT reboot the phone. Now all of my apps force close and all I want to do is a factory reset and forget this whole root business but when I try to do a factory reset it force closes. What the hell. :mad:

Edit: I could do a factory reset from the recovery menu which was good. But the guide is no good. In my opinion there are too many files and downloads for this to be easy for individuals to do. Unrevoked was amazing! One click and my device was where it needed to be. Why didn't they do this for the Droid Incredible 2??

Edit 2: Please pardon my impatience. Rooting my Droid Incredible original was so easy, this more complex method has my patience and manners fully tested.

I am wondering about the following instructions from the guide: "Note: in "adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/," add the filepath to wherever you put tacoroot in front of tacoroot.sh.
You should see a red exclamation mark, press VolUp+Power to boot into stock recovery, then hold VolUp+VolDown+Power to reboot. Continue mashing keys:"

Do I reboot when it gets to the screen with the red exclamation mark or when it boots into stock recovery? At the red exclamation mark I tried to continue holding down the VolUP+Power but it just sat there. Is there a step I am missing here? Or better yet a video that shows this step by step?
 
Ok I have followed all of the instructions however I am having the following problems:

1. ROM Manager says that I do not have system root.

I was told that installing busybox would solve this. The Busybox installer does say that my phone is rooted but whenever I try to install it it says the installation failed and for me to try a few different versions. I tried a few of them and none of them seem to install at all.

2. I tried to switch to the root user in a terminal emulator with 'su' and it said: not found

I am assuming that I have done something wrong in my process? I followed the tacoroot method and then went to the revolutionary tool and then flashed the radio with the .zip it said just fine, yet, I am not rooted?

I appreciate the help in advanced. I'll be using ROM Manager premium to do the installs for me, I find it easy to use.

Edit: The instructions from this do not explain to do use the superuser zip to root the phone. But this makes sense since this is only meant for downgrading! Sorry for the double posting and the extra words. The links here have been helpful, many thanks! I am rooted once more!
 
So...2 things I learned over the last 3 days trying to root my dinc2 (now nicknamed "fort knox".

Revolutionary does not seem to work under Win7 64bit...at least not for me. Worked BEAUTIFULLY on my wife's XP 32bit machine....after 2 days of trying EVERYTHING from EVERY forum...

secondly, trying the "when all else fails" method of installing Wubi to run ubuntu... that OS doesn't seem to understand what to do with my dual video card dual monitor setup...


anyway, phone is rooted, FINALLY, and restoring backup from my buddy's rooted droid x that I borrowed during this adventure...
 
This may sound like a silly question, but i just started trying to root my Dinc2, i achieved S-Off through htcdev, so my question is do i still need revolutionary or do i do something different to achieve root
