That step is not for unlocking - it's only if you want to relock your bootloader, so you won't need it

Thanks! Now my biggest question is whether or not to go back to Swype. The word correction/prediction with what comes w/ Mikg is great! Just wish I could drag my finger around. Not sure I want to go back to life without that, but will give this one a chance. Is there a way to make this one similar to Swype, or is actual Ashore the only way? Again, man, the word prediction here is amazing! I have typed this whole post with it, and it got just about everything right!
Hi, I am also new to here/rooting and having the same issue as dragon. I have rooted my phone with no problem before but ever since I upgraded to 2.3.5, I have had no luck. I have the same HBOOT and Radio number as dragon. Unlike him though, I can access recovery and everything and I have superuser. I am just curious as to what my next step is and/or which guide should I use? Or should I start from scratch and unroot then reroot my phone? Thanks

Hi, first time on the forum. I'm interested in rooting my HTC EVO 4g ver 2.3.5 with hboot 2.18. Since I'm on hboot 2.18 it sounds like it's more difficult but doable using htcdev to unlock and then using captain throwback method to get back to hboot 2.10.
I think I can follow all the steps, EXCEPT I can't seem to reboot to the hboot screen. I've turned of the phone, removed the battery and turned it back on by pressing the volume down button and the power buttons. It always turns on to the normal home screen. Any ideas to help me out??
Any other recommendations to consider during this process??

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
for one make sure that fastboot is turned off. settings>apps>uncheck fastboot. next press and hold power(first)+vol down. you should be able to get to the bootloader from there.

Question. Is there anyway to root the Evo 4G without the use of the USB port, because my port came unconnected, and now I use a battery dock to charge my phone, but still want to root the phone.

Well I have the EVO 4G, 2.3.5, hboot 2.18 and have been reading the rooting for dummies - gingerbread edition, and about ready to try it. I would like to unlock with no watermark to make it easier in case I have to unroot it which is Captain Throwbacks method. But to do so, I need to put hboot 2.10 on the phone? If so, where is that? Once I do that, then I can use unrevoked?
Or is it not that big of a deal to revert back to original settings and no watermark if I do it the HTC method?

In order to get rid of the watermark once unlocking it you have to use captn throwbacks guide. It involves downgrading the h-boot in order to gain full S-off using unrevoked

and with the captain's method you can choose to use either unrevoked with hboot 2.10 or using revolutionary with hboot 2.16. unrevoked seems to be the easiest way, but if you like i can link you to the PC36IMG hboot 2.16 version. the hboot 2.10 PC36IMG is linked in the captain's guide.

So how do u downgrade you hboot? Do I flash the pc36img containing the 2.1 hboot? If so where do I find that? What are the differences between the 2.1 hboot and 2.16 hboot?
As I keep reading things, am I correct in understanding that if I root via the HTCdev method, I can unroot and it won't be watermarked?
I figure it is easier to ask questions now before I try something and regret it. Thanks...
ok there is basically three parts to rooting via captain's method:
1.unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev.
2.changing the misc partition using the flash_image.zip and the mtd-eng.zip via adb commands
3.using a PC36IMG file to switch the hboot.
for hboot 2.10:

Ok, I started the unlocking process via the HTCdev method. I did download the app list backup program and ran that first. After unlocking the bootloader, it reset the phone back to original settings? Is this normal? None of my apps or screens are there. I thought things wouldn't change unless you wiped the phone and flashed a new rom?
unfortunately, during the unlocking process your phone will get wiped. there is no way around it.

once you log back into google your contacts should sync back.
yes you can just flash the su file to get your stock rom rooted, but there are better roms out there that are waaaaay better then stock. try mikg3.11
and with amon ra 2.3 recovery you will need to select the first three and then wimax to backup your wimax keys (4g). you really only need to do it once and have that nandroid backup saved somewhere safe like on your computer and even on the cloud like dropbox. after that wimax is not necessary.

I was going to go with the mikg3.11 rom. I have it downloaded already.
To make sure I get it correct, I do the amon ra 2.3 recovery (which is the nandroid backup in step 4 of flash the rom from the revised rooting gingerbread 2.3.5 guide?) first then flash the rom? Got it, install the amon ra and did the backup. Getting ready to flash the rom! It worked fine. NOW running MikRom 3.11. Yea....
If I want to achieve s-off and no water mark, do I start that process just after unlocking the phone or do I need to flash the rom first? Assume I need to flash the rom then look at turning s to off.
The only other question I have (for now..lol) is do I do the wipe, then partition the sd card, then flash? Seems like I would need to wipe the info, partition the sd card, then flash the rom.
So now I need to reinstall all of my apps then do a backup with Titanium Backup. Plus do a Nandoid backup after that?

1.no need to flash a rom to continue going forward on getting full root. just skip the unlocking process with captain's guide. also skip the parts on getting a custom recovery. you will need to proceed to step 5.

3.yes. tb only backsup the apps and its data. a nandroid backup backsup everything on your phone except for your radios. the guide explains about nandroid backups. just remember that they are your friend.

On the partitioning, it recommends to do that before flashing a rom, but since I have already flashed the rom, guess, I should just copy everything to my computer, partition, then copy back to the card? And then get a2sd. Before I get a2sd, do I need to push the apps back onto the phone to move them to the card? Or will a2sd put the apps together as one on the sd card?
When using TB, should I backup everything it can backup?

what rom are you on? some roms have a2sd built in so that all you would have to do is partition your card and then your aps will automatically be moved.
ok this is what i would do:
- make a backup of your card on your pc
- get titanium backup and then back all of your apps and data. DO NOT BACKUP any system apps (they will be in red).
- go into recovery and make a nandroid backup (if you have not done one already)
- partition your card
- then ONLY wipe dalvik cache and cache
- re-flash your rom
if your rom does not have a2sd then i would do a full wipe and re-flash the rom and restore your apps with tb. then flash dark tremors and then command the apps to the card.
