Root How To Root + Install Custom ROM + Backup + More

Cool. Once you've rooted using either of the One-Click rooting apps listed, there are instructions in the second half of the thread for installing a custom ROM (if you want to switch to one).

Yep cheers. Trying to get my head around it :P I'm in the middle of trying to flash a new ROM....fingers crossed.

Are you running android 2.1? (You can check in settings >> about phone).

If so, the one-click rooting apps in this thread can root your phone.

Hi again,
I'm trying to follow the instructions in that thread but am having issues....

So far, I've
- rooted my phone with Universal AndRoot
- put the latest Amon Ra on my SD card in the root folder
- downloaded Chronos Ginger 2.2.4 (should I choose a different ROM?) and put that on the SD card as well
- battery is charged.
- I have nothing to backup.
- Installed ROM Manager from the market.
- Flashed Clockwork and rebooted
- Flashed Amon Ra from the 2nd bottom option at which point my phone didn't reboot by itself, so I rebooted it manually.
- Turned phone off again.
- restarted it by holding Home + Power.

All I get is a black screen with a picture of my phone and a red triangle with an upside down exclamation point. I have to pull the battery out to get it going again.

What am I doing wrong??

** edit **

Just tried reflashing Amon Ra again, and rebooted manually holding home, and now Amon Ra has shown up, so I am continuing with the instructions....

** edit 2 **

SUCCESS! Chronos is installed :D

Just in case anyone else ends up reading this...my trackball didn't work in Amon Ra so I had to use the Volume buttons to navigate, and the Call button to select stuff.

Hi and no i didnt as was worrying i was going to lose all my data, is it ok to do that then as i will do that on your reply and try again, at least my backup worked, thankyou for getting back to me from brian p-s do i do a factory reset in recovery ? cheers

Yeah, it will wipe the phone conpletely clean, which is necessary to install a new rom without errors. (So, appart from minor updates between versions of the same rom, you'll always have to do one).

You should backup everything you want to transfer before switching roms and restore it on the new rom. (So for instance, I backup apps with 'titanium backup' and SMS messages with 'SMS Backup & Restore. My contacts are synced with Google anyway).

And yeah, do it from recovery right before you flash.

Boot into recovery, do a rom backup, pick the option to wipe the cache and then install. If it then fails to boot, or seems buggy, then you'll need to redo this with a factory reset instead of wiping the caches. For a minor update like that, chances are it will work fine.

Hmm. When you installed cronos, how many .zip files did you flash? You see, google asked developers not to put their apps (including the market, gmaps and so on) in with custom ROMs. There should be a 'gapps' file listed on the page you downloaded cronos from; download that and flash it.

and lastly on my home screen on htc chronos 2.2.4 i have a chronos orangey logo and a message saying "launch all your apps and touch the launcher icon" which is the launcher icon
Yeah, that's just a preinstalled homescreen tips widget I believe. Nothing to worry about, I always remove it.

and how do i reinstall all my backed up apps that i saved on my sd card,
You'll need to go to the market and reinstall whichever backup app you used (so titanium backup, if you followed my example), then restore them.

To clarrify though, installing apps to the sdcard does not protect them from a factory reset, which I think is what you're getting at. If you didn't backup your apps with a third party app, then I suggest you do a rom backup, restore your old firmware rom backup, backup all your apps and then restore the new firmware rom backup. (No wipes needed for restoring rom backups, by the way).

I realise this is a lot of hassle, but trust me, it all gets very simple after a few goes when you get a routine down. It takes me roughly half an hour to flash a new rom, but 99% of that is me leaving the phone to backup/flash/restore etc while I get on with something else.

Hi and just to let you no im trying to download the apps i need from android market but its not letting me, ive even used pc and phone but with no luck, also my htc is not working from within my pc as its now not reconising my htc hero, is it because im using chronos 2.2.4 ? Any help please again as i realy want to reinstall all my previous apps and sms messages, oh lastly is there any weather themes, ie live weather themes like that were on the original 2.1 firmware on the home screen?

Many thanks and hope to hear soon from

Brian

What happens when you try to install stuff from the market?

And yeah, cronos comes without HTC sense, so HTC sync won't work any more. It may be possible to find an alternative program, depending on what you're trying to sync.

Ok, im trying to download sms backup and titanium backup, but pc or market not letting me do it anymore, so am i rite in doing a search for "gapps" heres where i am,

Hi, ok ive just installed zip file called "Gapps" and i have just installed it in recovery mode, ok all im getting is a welcome to htc hero sceen with a message saying please touch the green android to begin, but all im getting is nonthing else as it keeps coming back, should i have erased all data again and done a fresh install, if this is the case which one do i install 1st from fresh? is it chronos 2.2.4 and then the "gapps" app or have i maybe just downloaded the wrong "GAPPS" ? Please help me, thankyou again from Brian..

I just noticed the most recent rom (and the one I linked you to) on cronos is 2.3.x and you're on 2.2.4. That might be the problem, might not be, but it cant hurt to start afresh.

Here's what I would do:
- Download Cronos 2.3.0
- Download the correct gapps file.
- On your phone, backup anything new you have done since you switched to cronos 2.2.4. E.g, any SMS messages you have sent, apps you've installed and so on.
- Boot the phone to recovery.
- Do a ROM backup
- Do a factory reset
- Flash the cronos rom.zip
- Turn the phone on and let it boot all the way.
- Once it's fully turned on, switch it off again and boot to recovery.
- Flash the gapps
- Turn the phone on and let it boot up again.
- You should see the welcome screen with the android image.
- Here you can either
a) Click the picture of the android and continue through to set up the phone.
b) Tap on all four corners of this window, like this, which will skip activation. If you skip it, you will then have to go to the homescreen, hit the Menu button and then pick Settings >> Accounts & Sync and then add your gmail account there, before the market will work.
