Root How to "root" the LG Ally

Anyone know why I'm getting the error: device not found. I'm in the tools folder. adb seems to start up. Im on ubuntu. Must be a simple mistake that I'm making, im new to the android turf. Any ideas would help. Thanks!

Edit: Ok. found debug mode. Now im getting the, 'error: insufficient permissions for device'

Please help i followed the instructions to the letter i got the '#' sign as i should have and my phone even reboot as it should have but when i brought up the menu there was no super user icon :(

download android terminal emulator from the market and type su and press enter. if you get a prompt saying that the terminal is asking for super user privileges you're good to go

Just thought I'd mention to other users, that if its not working the first time try again multiple times. I retried the process about 8 times, with different variations of mounting/unmounting/removing the SD card and it finally worked. The end variation for me was mount the card, follow the steps to get the asroot2 program running /system/bin/sh, then just remove it without unmounting it.

Got Ally Saturday. Read up on rooting. Followed rooting process, but as I did, I installed LG Mobile Updater and unwittingly ran an update for my phone... THEN I finished the rooting process.

Superuser Permissions is listed in my phone. But, Titanium Backup says it doesn't have root access and Barnacle doesn't work.

So I've got voided warranty without the benefits of root functionality :-S (TOTALLY my fault for not having more of a clue). Is there any way I can UN-update (without root functionality)? Or root it?

I have the same problem. After the OTA update yesterday morning my phone has been unrooted. It came at worst possible time, I'm away from home at a hotel with no WIFI and was going to use Barnacle . I'll have to wait until I get home to try to r~root it

You're talking to n00bzilla here.

So, A phone that isn't rooted, but is on Firmware v8, can be rooted using the method in this thread?

And then, just don't accept any OTHER OTAs?

Did not realize there was a rooters handbook. Any way to revert back or do I have to try to root again?

I took the OTA, it did unroot the phone, and I rerooted it. Yes, the same process works. Note that jreed2560 is just wrong, as well as rude. The update works fine, you just need to reroot. (If you had a custom ROM, then the OTA would be a problem.)

Having done the process a second time, I'm now convinced that fiddling with the SD card isn't needed with the asroot2 issues. Just keep trying and it will work eventually. Took me 12 tries this time. I just kept trying until I got a # prompt. (I did occasionally exit out of all the nested shells. Each attempt starts a new nested shell.)

On a new Ally, w/ V6. Titanium Backup working. Barnacle doesn't run in to errors (but my laptop still can't connect to it). Trying OTA and reroot.

Are there ROM FLASH that work with the LG Ally?

Took the OTA this morning (VS740ZV8) and it wiped my root. Followed the standard steps and re-enabled. Worth the extra 10 minutes to redo it, my phone feels zippier with the new update!

someone obviously doesn't understand smiley ;) I was not wrong. The OTA infact did UNROOT your phone. and there is not way to Rollback the ally to the previous software version. You guys are LUCKY that the OTA didn't close the root exploit you've found. Everyone that knows anything about rooting knows that you do not accept OTAs after you have acheived root. Thats why 99% of the custom roms out there have a work arount that disables OTA notifications. And those that don't strongly advise you to not accept OTAs. I was making a joke about people not knowing this and you decided to pull out your soapbox.

I guess that's why people were doing the manual updates I read in other posts and forums. I guess I never put 2 and 2 together.

I'll reject any future OTA's for sure .

anyone having trouble rerooting their ally after doing the manual update to v9? after step 1 of stage 2 all i get is the following:

$ /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
[+] Using newer pipe_inode_info layout
Opening: /proc/7482/fd/3

then it stops, it doesn't even bring up the $ prompt.

Any one found a way to capture the update to get that information into rom developer hands to possibly speed the custom rom process along?

i think my problem is that the "adb push" isnt putting the files to my fone. i use astro file manager and it says that there isnt anything in the /data folder. so there isnt any asroot2 program for it to run. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Finally got it rooted again...it's weird though. I don't understand why playing with the sdcard mount allows it to get root. It seems like there would be two values 1 or 0. What ever the case I got it rooted again. I tested Barnacle with my wife's Iphone (AT&T doesn't have 3 G where I'm at) and everything works great!
