Root How to ROOT??

Hi Guys,
I have had my LG GT540 just over a year now and after a few battery draining issues i bought a new battery, but the same issues persisted, so then looking up on loads of sites, i realise that you can do so much more with your phone as long as its ROOTED!!!
My mobile already has firmware 2.1 and therefore there is no option in the hidden menu section (3845#*540#) etc.
I have read a few more articles about other things to download to enable you to ROOT your phone in other ways but they don't say exactly how to do it as if they presume you should already know!!
So if this matter has already been addressed in another post somewhere then i could just follow a link there.
But basically i want to know what i need to get to get ROOTED.
EG. what to download and once its downloaded where does the file go or get extracted to etc (on to pc or on to mobile SD card )
Any check boxes that need unchecking or checking etc and any other settings too.

I have also this morning done a factory reset so maybe that might have solved my original battery draining problem and switching off when battery not even used
Thanks Rick

Same question, and I did't get my phone yet, but whether SuperOneClickv2.3.1-ShortFuse can work well on GT540? If it's OK, it will be the most convient way to root the phone, I believe.

Right.. phone seems to be rooted apparently, yay, (well SETCPU now runs) i was thinking upgrading to android 2.2 or more but yet again i come to the problem of like above where your not told every single detail etc and best places to download and where to download (on PC or sd card etc) also even an item on youtube was going well till the guy then said to hold the power off button till the 'phone options' menu comes up then select REBOOT. Well mine dont have that option..... just theses
SILENT MODE, AIRPLANE MODE, MOBILE NETWORK and POWER OFF....
am i missing a trick here??... has the PHONE OPTIONS menu got a settings section anywhere where you can change any of these like swapping mobile network to reboot???

ANYWAY at the moment the most annoying thing happening is that my phone is TURNING ITSELF OFF RANDOMLY.... even when battery is full. and when the battery is full and then you unplug it and open camera and take 1 picture then message pops up to plug in charger,

so i dont know if its a faulty battery which is new (a week) or some sort of battery memory problem, or some settings that may tell phone to power off if it thinks battery is nearly dieing. (or maybe turns off if CPU gets too hot) i tried factory reset and it still happens.

If you are running 2.1 google z4root.apk, download it, copy to your sd card, then browse your sd card on your phone using a none root file manager, like astro install z4root and hit permanant root, and your rooted.

As for installing 2.2 check dudeman's post, however that is a very old rom, you might be better off with 2.3 atleast for now.

but the basics are, root your phone, download mybackup root, backup your apps and data with mybackup root, download KDZ updater and 2.1 with fastboot rom, use kdz updater to flash 2.1 with fastboot, download the custom rom, boot to fastboot by pressing camera button when you switch the phone on, use fastboot commands to flash.

Dudeman has auto installers though, which will probably be better for a first time flasher, then its harder to do something wrong.
