HOW TO UNROOT YOUR PHONE!
If you wish to unroot your phone because you want to take into a MetroStore for repair or for whatever reason. On your phone settings go to Privacy and select Factory Data Reset. After doing this your phone will reset to factory state and will no longer be rooted.

This information comes thanks to MikesToolz.

Please keep in mind that your phone will be back to when you bought it. Which means all user data will be deleted.

does this include bloatware?

I haven't tried it myself but i do believe it will restore everything, including bloatware.

when i did a system restore after first rooting my optimus it restored it completely and i don't think this will be any different.

Sounds cool, although I am waiting to root until there is a backup of the original rom and ports of mods such as Cyanogen.

I rooted my Ascend and then modded it with Cyanogen 6 with ADW. I was wiping all the data to get ready to sell it and when I tried to remove my account in contacts, it said something to the effect of there needing to be a google account associated with the phone. It told me to reset to factory defaults to remove this. So i did. But the phone is now back to exactly the way it was when I rooted and modded it. I am guessing since I changed the rom, that it went back to that once I reset to factory.

But I guess this is different now since no one has any mods of the original roms....or at least so far :)

That is exactly the reason. We have not changed the rom yet so it will go back to stock but once you flash a custom rom you will have to flash a stock rom to get it back to factory.

Does not work it will factory restore your phone but it will still be rooted if you Factory Reset look in apps and you will see that superuser remains as well as busy box under root explorer

Interesting Mikestoolz is not usally wrong like that, have you tried to run a root checker? and if you are still rooted then can one more person try this.

I guess if then it doesnt work maybe a moderator can delete the thread

The update removes root qnd puts all deleted apps back on the phone. Look for manual method in the FOTA thread

You don't actually lose root by the update, it just changes the permissions of su, but you do lose root access. The su file is still there, just not with proper permissions. A factory reset does nothing inside of /system partition (where su and super user are) so you will retain root. In the other thread about unrooting I have laid out how to do it.

Unrooting is rather easy. Use root explorer and delete superuser.apk from the /system/app folder. Go to the Android market and download and install super user. Use root explorer again and delete su from /system/bin. Go to the market and uninstall super user. Now you are unrooted.

Just putting it here since this thread looked more popular. Might want to add this to the 1st post.

I'm not sure metro will be able to tell if your phone was a rooted once you do it...

Metro only goes off by the superuser app and if you have a modded rom then we cant do nothinh coming from a metro pcs employee. as long as the app icon is gone then we will do warranty exchanges and everything..

if you ever need to install the apps to take it back to metro, just install the @metro.apk file and download the bloatware back, they will never know.;)

LOL well if the employee taking the phone back reads here or is tech savvy like us he will have his suspicions but then a employee like that will just say you were rooted cool lets exchange this for you LOL

Root Explorer is an app that must be paid for - sharing of paid apps is something that is not allowed here!
