[HOWTO] Tether natively

For what it is worth, when I got din there was a verizon paper in the box announcing free tethering with a verizon web address to get the proper programming for your os. So this argument on the ethics of tethering the din is really moot. And yes, I kept the notification.
 
I was asleep for the past two weeks I guess.

Aren't a lot of people waiting on the ROOT for this phone to enable tethering? But you're telling me it can already be done?

And what is the difference from the Apps that apparently enable tethering?

I have been waiting on root to get this phone to tether...I guess I was trolling around in the wrong areas of this forum!
 
Vec, USB tether is supported WITHOUT rooting

WiFi tether requires ROOT since it has to change the mode of the WiFi chip.
 
Ahh....IC! Thank you for the clarification. So I can tether but am bound by a USB cord. That's fine...I just want to enable use of my laptop while on the road.
 
Two advantages to PDANet still - you can continue to use mobile internet on your phone while connected to your laptop -- you cannot do this in MBC mode. You can also switch between phone modes without losing connection -- charge, sync, disk drive.

Hmm, I'll have to try it with Vista and ICS for the heck of it. Should be able to est an ad hoc wifi and ICS the phone.

Not true, VZ has the DPI boxes right now and they can detect you RIGHT NOW and 100% legally.

Packets coming from android phones look different than say, windows variants. With the DPI's out there, they certainly do know, but what are they doing about it?

I forsee a redirection page in the future.... which would be 100% legal.

If you want to break your contract, then you probably shouldn't do this. I know someone that got busted, and he had several thousands of dollars of charges. He had an attitude just like drtrmiller, but in the end, he was forced to pay it.

I just want to post my two cents. I pay a large amount (30.00) for internet use on my phone. If you tether, you are still using your phone but viewing the internet on your laptop. The thought that they would charge another 25 a month to tether is crazy. So F them, I will tether, lie, cheat, and steal anything I can vrom Verizon. I didn't use to feel like this but their customer service, ONE BILL, and prices suck. They to have the biggest network, so I have to stay for now.

That's your choice. It's still cheaper than some home internet connections!

And VZ does have the largest network. I can drive for hours out of town and have EXCELLENT VZ 3G service that works perfectly.

ATT sucks just 15 mins out of town, either **gasp** edge which is worthless, or no service, which is even more worthless. Don't get me started on ATT dropped calls, then dropping when I'm calling someone that dropped that is on ATT. HAH!

It's like having a gun chambered in .380 on ATT, ammo is hard to find, so you might as well throw the gun, or turn it into a paperweight.

Oh sorry, back to tethering, lol......

You may have kept the paper, but you didn't read it.

Immediately below the paragraph you are referring to (which does not contain the word "free" anywhere by the way), is the following:

* Subscription to Mobile Broadband Connect feature required for wireless Internet service. Please visit www.verizonwireless.com/broadband for more details.

Look, I don't really care whether people want to do this or not.

However, some people on here really need to stop telling other people that this is completely a non-issue with no potential consequences. You're most certainly not going to go to jail for this or anything like that, but you could certainly be on the hook for a bill of an unknown amount of money to VZW easily enough.

Oh yeah, and anybody that says they can't tell the difference is crazy. They most certainly can tell if they care to look. You obviously would have to give them a reason to investigate your usage...they're not going to pay people to sit there and "look for tethering people" all day. But if they decide activity on your account is suspicious and analyze your data, they will be able to tell data originating at your phone from data originating at a tethered computer.

Whether or not that's worth the risk (however minimal it may be) is up to you, but certainly don't be fooled into thinking it's something they "can't prove" or anything like that.

Do what you want, just make sure you're OK with the risks. Don't do it and then cry "but "they" said I couldn't be caught!" if you get a huge bill in the mail some day.

This comment shows your ignorance. Here's a contract: "I, jermaine151, agree to pay YOU $30 to mow my grass every 2 weeks."

You mow it for a month and I don't pay you for it.. You do it for a year and I don't pay as contracted. What law did I break? And how fast can you get the police to my house to arrest me or write me my ticket (since that's what happens to people that break the law)?

Everyone that has read more than 3 posts in this thread, knows they're trying to get use of a service that should be included for free, but violates their "contract". WE GET IT! We're here to DO IT ANYWAYS! CALL THE COPS on us or drop it already!

Please show me in the Statute of Frauds or Contract Law where tethering is illegal. Two people write a contract to wash each others backs and one doesn't; is there now a law on back washing? No. Again, the misuse of the word law and legal. It's just contractual violation. TOS. Let's be careful about calling people ignorant.

When they invented the internet they had two types of tcp/ip packets. One called the Android packet and one called the PC packet. LOL
We are screwed! They invented special http get and put commands too just keep extra track.
Seriously, there are too many services on capable mobile devices to discern PC IE browsing from mobile web browsing packets. browsers can spoof anything. Proxy everything though vpn or https and a dpi box is hopelessly blind except for volume of data and destination ips.

I think you mean "if you want to break your contract then you probably SHOULD do this." Because you are correct that if they catch you your contract can be terminated but then what? ETF? I don't think the contract is specific on the penalty for violating TOS other than the ETF.

And honestly, to all, Verizon has been pretty good about service and lock down of equipment lately. No more locked gps units etc. Unlimited data versus ATT's new plans. Don't abuse them by streaming day and night. Be prudent and things won't go badly.

Very true and well said. I'm tethered now, thanks to this forum, but will only use it when no other connection options are available (i.e. camping, hotel that charges for wi-fi, etc.)

I expect VZW will follow AT&T's lead, and change their unlimited data plans to match AT&T's...

its just a matter of time...

I guess I'm from the old school... because I don't understand that statement, thought, or mentality....

I mean, if what VZW charges is "crazy" and you don't like it, then switch to another carrier, or don't use it.

To me, your statement kind of reads as if it could be applied as.... "Comcast charges me way too much for HBO and Showtime, so I'm going to hack my box, or cable to get it for free... Yeah! F Them!!"

You really have no idea, so they can detect you easily. I'd suggest on doing some reading up on how tcp/ip works.


Just because you may not LIKE the ideas presented here doesn't mean they aren't true. I have a feeling that people don't like to be warned, but will cry when they get bills in the thousands of dollars.

I think this may actually be a good thing. Maybe have the 0-2GB be $20. That would save the majority of us $10/month. Then have 2-5GB be $30, and maybe like 5-10GB be like $45. I Think this would be fair and actually get MORE people to use data if there's was a low/moderate usage tier for less than the heavy user tier.

I agree with this too and I think I would be in the 0-2GB range. I also want it known that Verizon has the BEST customer support (minus one incident in 5 years) that I've received from ANY company. I don't want to steal anything from them. I just don't agree with paying $25/mo. to tether when I wouldn't try to make them my ISP, but rather use the connection in a pinch. I don't say f*** them. I see them as the best wireless carrier choice out there (in Ohio at least).

How do you make a DUN connection? And when I tried to dial #777 it said number doesnt work..
