Help HTC Desire 3g problem

Still having this network issue at the moment. It now doesn't pick up any 3G signal anywhere and I have to use GSM all the time. It's worked fine in the past though it's only this last week the issue has occurred. I spoke to vodafone who said there was no network issue in the area. Because it's worked previously I'm considering a factory reset, I'd rather avoid having to set everything up again though, that'll be a pain!

I used to have this issue in the past (check my posts in this thread), but not anymore :)

How did I solve mine?

I changed my mobile operator from T-Mobile NL to Vodafone NL.

That's it.

Problem was, T-Mobile network was not good enough due to a lot of data subscriber, most probably from iPhone users. People complained in some newspapers in NL.

Since I changed to Vodafone.NL, my HTC Desire data connection is working wonderful.

No problem at all.

So, check your provider ... borrow sim card from other provider ... things like that.

PS: My friend told me that T-Mobile NL has improved their network, but too late!

I've had a similar problem, I'm on Orange in the UK.

In central London over the weekend and the 3G icon kept disappearing. Turning the phone off and on would make the connection come back for a few minutes before it went off again. It's obviously not a signal issue, but I don't particularly want to send it back to Orange for a Victorian style operation where they amputate parts for no logical reason.. Hmm..

I've just got my Desire on Vodafone a couple of days ago, and was disappointed by the incredibly poor data connection. My brother, also on Vodafone, has an earlier HTC (hero I think), so we compared our connections. He gets full everything. Whilst mine fails. If I turn mine to WCDMA only, I lose all network. I can't stream anything, YouTube, music or anything. Turning on auto with gsm, I get a signal, but data rate so slow that the connection drops out. Hec, some text messages fail, and have to be sent later.

All the while, bro's phone is sitting there, happy as Larry (however happy he was).

So, I'm hoping it's a software thing, and that an update to Froyo will bring with it a fix for this. I'm about to whine to Vodafone about it, because I need to log a complaint before my first week is out. :(

if the 3g doesnt work an you have used any widget thats not a HTC one for enabling APN here is what works for me.

Settings-Wireless + Networks -Mobile networks-Access point names.

Check the names are correct for eg
My phone is on orange and my internet access point is called Orangeinternet but sometimes a widget will change it to "orangeinternetapndisabled" think it changes a few other names too so try pressing "menu" then "reset to default" Works for me hope it works for you too.

Thanks for the tip! This worked for me as well!
I started to have this problem today, I am on Orange, 3G worked quite fine for the last couple of days.
So, conclusion what I did:
1/ APN settings reset to default from the menu (are these used by the operator for 3G by the way?)
2/ I STOPPED using the mobile widgets to turn on/off the wifi and mobile internet. I don't trust those anymore.

a VERY quick update:
it may have been an intermittent solution, as I just found out that Orange is having some problems today with providing Internet on 3G and they are working on it. So false alarm, the phone is probably fine.
Conclusion: if you have connection problems ALWAYS call your provider FIRST, and start to blame your phone SECOND. ;)

Im on orange and from 2pm onwards was having a lot of intermittant 3G Mobile Internet problems!!

Wasnt sure if it was the phone or Orange....obviously having read this thread, it was Orange

Me too. Got really worried the antenna was broken or something... 2PM onwards for me.

Yeah, since about 3pm today I have been unable to get a 3g connection. Sometimes I seem to, but nothing will load.

Been down for about 7 hours now. Not really acceptable. Will be contacting orange tomorrow to see about getting some money knocked off my bill as I really needed 3g today.

I had this issue.

The problem related to the program Juice Defender, which I had previously installed and then uninstalled. It turned out to have changed the apn settings. Going to settings>Wireless>mobile networks>access point names and then clicking the active apn and restoring to defaults corrected the issue.

Hi, i've got the same problem, it started after i installed and used juice defender, i think i have followed your directions but no joy, i clicked on the active apn - which said orangeinternet - went menu, resore defaults and no joy, can you verify your directions please in case i have done something wrong, many thanks.

I found myself with the "turning on" problem yesterday and even after removing the battery could not get 3G connections.

Tyseyh's earlier post - going into Mobile Networks/Access Points, choosing Menu/Restore Default and then checking "OrangeInternet" worked perfectly for me - thanked him.

You have to check the right APN tho - if you're in doubt, call your network and get them to send new APN details to your phone, which should sort it.

I use the HTC supplied individual widgets (under "Settings" in the Widget Menu) rather than the Android "Power" widget so it could well be those which are resetting the APN details I guess??

Thanks again for the solution peeps!!

After you did restore defaults, did you 'check' the box against "OrangeInternet" - I had to do that to make it work...

Unbranded Desire with Orange SIM, data very flaky yesterday and this morning - a ping would pass, and occasionally I would get some data like an email coming in. Even though it looked like I had 3G I wasn't really getting data. At lunchtime today I lost connection in the lift and now Mobile Network is sitting stuck at "turning on".

Does anyone know if Orange is still having problems today or is this a co-incidental issue?

I called Orange this early afternoon. They said they're still working on it. The customer support guy said they would send me a notification text when the problem is sorted out. No message so far...
However 3G worked again for about 15-20 minutes this afternoon, I believe around 4-5 PM. Then since 6 PM not really or rather not at all.

I spoke to Orange yesterday and approached the subject of "compensation" for the service being down. They stated that they would consider it, but only when they know how much time the problem lasted for.

So remember, Orange users. Call them when it's all working again and demand some credit, compensation or a free cinema ticket or whatever!! You have paid for the data service after all - Contracts work both ways after all. Or at least they should.

After further tinkering I'm fairly convinced this problem is caused by flakey 3G coverage (and the phone desperately retrying connections over and over) exacerbated by using 'widgets' to enable/disable 3G via the APNs.

Is there an app which switches the phone between GSM and GSM/WCDMA Auto modes - that would actually be more useful than disabling APNs (which is what the power apps seem to do)???

Orange definately have issues too - normally I get 1/2 bars of 3G around the house with occasional drops to 'Edge' locally - but for the last 36 hours I've been unable to get a consistent/decent 3G connection despite travelling around a lot - and even when I do have it, it seems to have upload issues (speed tests report 800k download and fail entirely to test upload).

I'm personally blaming idiots who are sitting at home using mobile broadband when they could use cheaper/faster ADSL. I know of 2 people who use mobile dongles in a house where wifi is freely available - e.g. they have ADSL!+?!??! - just because they're too lazy to set it up!!

Hello, (1st post on a forum ever....be kind!)

I've had my desire for about a month and had it unlocked from orange. I've just moved out to the Netherlands and got a Vodafone sim with internet access but so far I've not had any mobile internet at all. When I go into Access Point Names, there is nothing there! Is that right? I've tried manually entering some but I'm a complete technophobic with this phone being my first attempt at getting with the times....
there is a signal bar for calls and things but nothing with g's or e's or h's.

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks =)

No, that isn't right. The Access Point Names tell the phone how to use the Internet. You need to look up or call Vodaphone for the Vodafone NL APN settings and then add them.

I went to Vodafone and got the APN details, keyed them in and still nothing. I took it back again but the man in the shop didn't have a clue why it wasn't working and didn't really have anything else to suggest . I think I will start another thread as this problem isn't quite relevant to the topic, but thanks for your help!

Until recently my phone only ever displayed a H or G in the notification for the mobile network connection, but since visiting London just over a week ago I saw 3G in the note tray for the first time ever and now I get 3G in my local town, in addition to H and G.

Im on 3 and i just managed to sort my 3g/hsdpa connection out. I think it has something to do with changing the phone around can sometimes change settings without you realising. My apn settings were wrong, it said 3.co.ukextendedcontrols but it should just say 3.co.uk. Hit menu then reset these settings and it works again. Of course make sure that mobile netowrk is ticked if it still doesnt work
