HTC Desire and iPhone 4

Just wanna ask a general question to other desire users.

is the retina display really that good?? It certainly LOOKS damn good and "the stuff of dreams" but I am just looking at my desire screen and unless i REALLY REALLY strain, I can't really see pixels on the screen.

Meh, to me AM-OLED triumphs over IPS LCD. :p

Are you just looking at the screen on photos or have you seen one?

I didn't realise just how great the Desire screen was until I saw it for real. I can't imagine the I4 can be THAT much better. It needed it though, looking at a 3GS now is like looking into the past.

I have just had a look at the site and this is their multi-tasking layout:

Isn't that pretty much like a taskbar.....on Windows....?

The Android OS is constantly evolving at a rapid rate with aps to sd in 2.2 this will bring more developers, meaning more apps in market and a stronger upsurge in better games. Defragmentation in future versions (a reason a lot of large companys a shying away from the platform at the moment) hopefully from 2.6 onwards, will further increase androids appeal. (hopefully meaning older phones can be updated much more easily to newer versions of the os) There are bugs and niggles with the os but these bugs will get ironed out and hopefull with 3.0 we will have a polished and streamlined version of Android.

I've just discovered appbrain market sync. Ok its no Apple apps store but its far better than viewing the market on your phone

The info Lekky posted early said something like IPS LCD displays only give a slight increase in quality (3-5%) but draw around 30% more power than AMOLED ones.

Not worth it IMO, plus AMOLED has much more potential in terms of development, especially stuff like flexible displays. (See below)

YouTube - SAMSUNG Flexible AM OLED

Plus, surely if we cannot distinguish any individual pixels, even right up close, then Apple have inadvertently reached the very pinnacle of display technology. I mean, any further enhancements on pixel density would be ultimately pointless if we can't actually see them? I think it's all a bit overhyped to be honest, sure I can see the pixels on my Desire - if I bring my eyes right up to the screen. But at normal viewing distances of maybe 12 inches or more I can't see any pixels, so what's the point?

Reached the pinnacle of marketing guff, more like. Overhyped is right. IPS isn't even new technology.

Interesting point to note: Samsung are the developers of Apple's IPS displays! (in the ipad anyway - yet to be confirmed re:iPhone). So I trust their judgement when it comes to AMOLED v IPS...

So I just read up on the iPhone 4's multitasking, or should i say "multitasking".

Lots of iphone users are completely misunderstanding the "multitasking" capability of the next iphone. One of the iphone app devs just tweeted about it. About how lots of people are emailing him so excited about his app and multitasking, and that he will now be able to add background syncing of data the app uses.

To which he said he felt sorry crushing the enthusiasm of the users by havingto tell them this cannot actually be done using iphones "multitasking".

Apple knows many customers will jump to this conclusion, and to my knowledge hasn't done anything to clear it up. It's nit lying to customers, but it sure ain't telling the truth (and again, phones are not made by magicians Steve)

Yeah, it's service based multitasking. The iPhone allows 7 (I think) different services to run in the background, incluing stuff like VOIP and audio. Existing apps will have to be updated so that they can access the OS's multi-tasking capabilities.

It's a clever way of doing it, but it's still very limited.

Its not that clever, I mean possibly my most used app (after twicca) is newsroom, and this would be useless in the iphone...

Clever in the sense that it allows the illusion of multi-tasking, while preserving system resources and ensuring that Apple still maintain ultimate control over it.

Apps have to be updated via itunes so in all likelihood Apple will have final say over which apps can multi-task and which can't.

Yeah it's not really multitasking at all. This is what they're allowing -

Background audio - Allows your app to play audio continuously. So customers can listen to your app while they surf the web, play games, and more.

Voice over IP - Your VoIP apps can now be even better. Users can now receive VoIP calls and have conversations while using another app. Your users can even receive calls when their phones are locked in their pocket.

Background location - Navigation apps can now continue to guide users who are listening to their iPods, or using other apps. iOS 4 also provides a new and battery efficient way to monitor location when users move between cell towers. This is a great way for your social networking apps to keep track of users and their friends' locations.

Push notifications - Receive alerts from your remote servers even when your app isn't running.

Local notifications - Your app can now alert users of scheduled events and alarms in the background, no servers required.

Task finishing - If your app is in mid-task when your customer leaves it, the app can now keep running to finish the task.

Fast app switching - All developers should take advantage of this. This will allow users to leave your app and come right back to where they were when they left - no more having to reload the app.

Bit of a con if you ask me!

The average user really doesn't give a hoot about any restrictions by Apple. What exactly is it you are restricted from doing that makes it so bad. I would say you are more restricted by the lack of quality in marketplace on Android than you are by anything Apple.do.

The average Apple user doesn't. That's why they buy an iPhone, they want something everyone has, and they don't have to think about it anymore once they've bought it.

The discerning technophile takes an active interest in their product, and although might not necessarily code or root or whatever, they still like to have control. Apple products don't. Apple dictates what you can do, subject to their own personal agenda.

So what if Flash is a battery drain; the user should be the one to decide whether to use it, not Apple.

The App Store has more apps than the Android Market, yes. But honestly, the amount of decent, quality apps is probably the same. The App Store is full of really shitty apps, ones that don't work or are just bloatware. Note that Apple denies the entry of apps that are actually useful (tethering, keyboard mods, etc).

I have one lol. And no matter how deep I stare into the screen, I don't see how "retina" can be that much better. And AMOLED should be brighter. :)

Agreed. :p

Their marketing dept is very good! however very deceiving. They talk of the Iphone 4 features like something unheard of when in reality other phones have have had them long before. retina display!? a lie!!! they say that he human eye can only distinguish 326dpi when in reality they qualified people in the matter tell us that is actually that 477dpi is what the human eye is capable of distinguishing! See engadget for more details on this!

Video call? Are you kidding me! It's been done for years and not only through wi-fi but 3g. Multitasking? For WM this is a decade old or more! 5MP camera... nothing new though they make it sound like it!

I should stop here though I could go on for hours!

What you said there is true but i dont know there is just something that makes you wanna buy Apple products. It could be their advertising and marketing or the products just look so appealing and nice.
Their OS, however, looks way behind androids. The only thing that is keeping apple in the lead is their App store...

Hopefully, anroid will catch up by the end of this year.

Just a quick comment/question or two.

As far as the IPS "retina" screen goes, am I the only one that thinks that the creation of it was in effect a waste of time, money and resources by Apple? As it happens, they have their figures wrong about what the human eye can cope with, but even using their figures they believe that the human eye can only see 300dpi and they created a screen capable of 326dpi!!! Why? What's the point in producing something that people cannot distinguish from a lower res screen? Save money etc by producing UP TO the limit, not OVER it.

Just shows Apples mentality really. They are constantly trying to "prove" themselves like they are some insecure teenager!!!

Mini rant over :D
