Sorry for the late reply. As far as I am aware the cpu is hard soldered onto the mobo so a swap would fix it. Thankfully I have not had a reboot since the mobo was replaced.

I bought my Desire about 3 weeks ago and since 3 or 4 days is starts to reboot randomly. When I play a game, type a message, Check someones profile on facebook,... There is no pattern in it and I'm not sure it's temperature related. Because just a second before a reboot I was checking batterystats and the temperature was about 32

I posted elsewhere when my Desire started to do it whilst charging either in hubby's car or attached to PC (at home or work). At first it was just an odd occurrence and came straight back on. Now the reboots are taking longer to rectify and it does it quite randomly, although a popular one is if I try to connect to the mobile internet (as opposed to wifi which is ok). Mostly it sticks on the O2 Welcome screen, or I get to the 'preparing SD card screen' (before entering my PIN Code) and then it reboots itself again.
I'm currently trying to delete all my messge threads for a clear-out and it just won't let me without rebooting itself all the time (I'm using Handcent SMS app). I don't have masses of apps downloaded, am happy to get rid of some if necessary, but following on fromthe recent survey that 71% of smartphone owners use them for texting, phoning and checking their Facebook it seems ridiculous to have a phone that will all but make you a cup of tea, but doesn't have the capacity to hold all the apps, etc.
I noticed a few mentioned their handsets heating up, but mine isn't doing that. I'm currently on the 2.2 version.

I would love to but when I check for updates it tells me none are available and that I am up to date. I guess this is because my Desire is O2 branded (I had to wait months for the 2.2 update). 
The reboots are getting worse for me. Once or twice now it's done it while I've been browsing on Wi-Fi with the phone on charge; previously it only did it when using mobile data (both on and off charge).

I am waiting for my Desire to come back from HTC. Same story, it was fine for the first few months and suddenly it started the random rebooting. It always happened when playing games though (Angry birds, mostly 
) so the overheating reason would make sense.
When I phoned HTC the first time, I spoke to a very nice person who said they were aware of a possible problem but when I asked what the problem actually was, he couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me.
I phoned again today to find out what they had done to the phone (the tracking status says the phone is ready for collection), the lady didn't seem to know so I asked if they replaced the motherboard and she said yes, but then again not sounding too confident.
I am a little worried about the problem not being fixed though because from reading this thread, the problem started long before I received my phone (which I had to wait for because they were out of stock), so it makes me think that they might not know what the problem really is and that it could happen on the replacement.

Same here; I'm not O2 branded (just contracted) but if I check for updates it says I'm up-to-date and I also had to wait ages for my 2.2 update (plus I also got it AFTER my hubby, whose phone is newer than mine!) He isn't having any issues at all with his Desire

I've just booked mine in to be repaired because the moment I try to use any game, online app or browser my Desire shuts down and starts it's lovely reboot cycle.
I don't know if this has been posted already but I used the non 0845 number to contact the HTC UK Hotline, which is answered the exact same way. 01279 206906 is their geographical number and should save a few pennies as opposed to their premium rate number. Hope it helps.

I very much doubt it. I did so with mine in the hope that it would cure the problem and it made no difference whatsoever. From reading the threads about this fault on all the various forums I'd say most of those experiencing it have tried resetting to no avail.
I'm sending mine back to HTC for repair as soon as I can psyche myself up to part with it. As disappointing as this lapse in reliability is, I still love the phone.
I have received my phone back yesterday, not bad considering the holiday etc, that's about 5 working days.
I received an email from HTC with the UPS tracking number the day before, it allowed me to follow their progress, however I missed the bit where it said 'end of day delivery' and waited at home all day

So it came back yesterday, I put the SD and SIM cards back in and put it on charge. I have now reinstalled all the apps and all the data like photos are there, I guess they were on the SD card.
The only annoying thing is that they obviously removed the screen protector and stuck it back on really badly so I had to change it.
So far so good.

I think it was the 29th too. In fact the phone was repaired quite quickly, when I checked the online tracking status on Monday, it said it had been repaired and was ready for collection but UPS only collected on Thursday.
I rang HTC on Tuesday after I saw the update to chase them up, perhaps that sped things up a bit? And yes, they changed the motherboard, the delivery sheet doesnt give anymore details, just that it now has a new IMEI number.
I installed one of the games that previously made my phone crash (Bubble Blast) and played about 40mn, according to BatStat, the temperature of the battery went over 32oC and the phone did not reboot
I didn't notice what temperature it used to crash at before but someone else in the thread mentioned 30oC. So it all looks promising!So I am very happy to have my phone back, let's just hope it is not a problem it slips into after a few weeks or months (my original phone was ok for the first 5 months).

That's good service. On the tracking, mine still says being delivered to HTC, but spoke to them Thursday and was told it's being tested, ring back Monday. Do reckon they have just sent you a new one?

Well, it is effectively a new one but the case is the same because it had a little scratch on the side and it's still there.
More Bubble Blast last night and no problem
thanks, its only rebooted a few times so far so im unsure whether to get it fixed so i either call orange or i call my bank who i have phone insurance with, i dont want it to reboot in the middle of a call

Mine finally reached the point where I was forced to admit I can't live with it as-is and did a search online to find out what might be the problem. Found this thread. I was horrified by the video on page 1, and became steadily more so the more I read.
Has anyone compiled any stats from here (or other threads elsewhere) on success rates of the motherboard replacement? I know simply gathering reports from the forums is unlikely to be accurate, but would be a start. Even better: is it possible to request some data on the number of affected devices and repair success rates from HTC themselves via a freedom of information request?
Regardless of a successful fix or not, I will not be buying HTC again. I love their phone design, I love their Sense UI, but this is the second device in a row from them I've had which has been faulty. I previously had a HD2 which suffered from the text messaging bug where it would stop sending and receiving messages. HTC attempted to fix it via software updates multiple times, but were unable to eradicate it leading me to assume it was, once again, a hardware fault. Unsurprising given the HD2's also like to get very hot when actually used as a smartphone!
Edit: Think I'll go through Vodaphone first. Been doing some reading up on my rights and the UK laws via another site. As my phone was supplied with a contract, it is covered by the Goods and Services Act and this places the onus of repairing the faulty device squarely on Vodaphone's shoulders (as my contract provider). Need to do some further checking to find out what the legal situation re: them attempting to replace the phone with a refurb rather than warranty repair of my own device / straight up new replacement.
I ask because I'll be requesting a warranty repair for mine very soon. Should it come back still faulty, I'll be looking to get rid of it and have my contract cancelled on the grounds the device is not fit for the purpose it was sold.

They are a private company so not subject to FOI requests.
Thought that would be the case, but was worth asking anyway!
I've just pinged a message off to Vodaphone now, will see what happens. Definitely won't be letting them fob me off to HTC, though - under UK law they *are 100%* responsible for the repair or replacement of the device. You may actually be voiding your rights if you go direct to HTC as your carrier can then claim they are no longer responsible as you've had the device modified since purchase - at which point they can refuse to give any compensation that you might otherwise have a right to claim.
i have the rebooting problem since the last update, along with other problems with the sms alerts that i posted about last week.
for me though, im pretty positive its not to do with heat, as the weather is cold and it only does it when the phone is idle, two times, sittin in the dash of the car while its parked and im working i heard it reboot, and just now on my desk which is cold, the phone is physically cold and not a sign of any heat around the back like when im holding it for a while for in pocket

sent mine off to htc yesterday, from what i could tell the reboot pattern occured whenever i used navigation and then for several hours afterwards! i'll post when i hear back.
