HTC Desire Tips & Tricks [READ ME]

Hey, droid noob having finally ditched my iphone. Must say that after a week am very impressed with how versatile droid is, and loving my desire phone.

My question: I had a problem with my contacts, which left me having to input them all manually again to my new phone. They are currently saved to the phone, and I'm not sure how to go about copying or synching them to my gmail account. I set up a gmail account when I got the phone, and the contacts in there are currently empty.

Also, is there any great benefit in doing this. I speak to most of my friends either by sms, over the phone or thru facebook.

Thanks, and this has been a very useful thread so far.

I don't know. I saved all mine to phone as well, but after reading, it seems it's best to have them on GMail so you can recover and manage them. I've been playing around in contacts and have not been able to change their "location". All say "Phone".

The way i copied my contacts onto google was to go into the people app > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card,

This will move your your contacts onto the SD card but dont worry you can get them back by importing from SD card when you have finished.

Connect your phone to your pc via the disc drive option, then go onto the google contacts page and click import on the top right of the page.

Then it is just a matter of navigating to the contacts file you have just saved on your SD card and then clicking import.

You should then see all your contacts on there.

Not that that way is difficult, but I think there is an easier way...
Export to SD card as you mention, but then, from the phone, select Import from SD card - you will then be asked where you want them to be imported to - SIM / Phone / Google - pick google, and you contacts will be added to google. I ended up with a handful of duplicates which needed tidying up, but otherwise worked well.

hello there,
can anyone guide me tht how can we download email attachments while browsing oue email acc. on our htc mobiles?
as there is no link shown when we open our email containing attachments like excel or pdf files.

Not for any attachment...
For pdf (and I think doc/xls too) files gmail app only had "preview" button...so if you want to save the attachment you are out of luck...

It seems like that site is flash heavy, so it will work when you get the update to android 2.2

A question about the voice dialing.
How does it work in other languages supported by the HTC Desire. (In my case: Dutch)

From what I know, it works with the following so far: English, Mandarin, Japanese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

They will update, their mission statement is to provide it for every language. The last 4 were recent updates, so they are working on it :p

I got easier way to prevent duplicates, I did this. If you have some in phone and some google etc then do this. If you go on phone, people, view. It let's you select which you want, say you have 30 contacts ib gmail and 20 in phone that you want transferring, in the viww mode de select gmail, and jus select phone, that way yoy can edit remove and thencopy them to SD card. Go back to view and selwct gmail only this time, and export them contacts from SD card to gmail. Voila :) sorry if it sounds hard, my explanations sometimes get confusing lol. Doing it this way , i knew what contacts I had where and what needed removing and copying to prevent duplicates.

Having spent a weekend out on the town with my phone in my pocket I can concur that without a pattern lock all sorts will happen!

Made calls, made emails, updated facebook..but my favourite.. I managed to open the Barcode scanning app and killed the battery in no time :o
I now have a pattern lock!
I'm new here but what I do to lock my screen is to give the power button a short press and the screen will go off - it will be locked and it will stay locked. To unlock I give the power button another quick press and swipe down the screen once.

I keep my phone in my pants pocket without a case and I haven't had any problems. That pattern lock thingy is way too tedious...
