HTC Desire : Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3

so many people say sense is just a bloated software, stop complaining, if you dont like sense, you should have bought the nexus, DOH!!!

I like the HTC Desire's hardware and its physical buttons. Its part of the reason why I bought it ahead of Nexus One. And sense isnt bad to be honest but it just didnt have the wow factor for me so Im glad Ive rooted cos Its opened a world of possibilities for me!

Silly! I used to like sense (not anymore) but that was never the reason I bought my desire.

The nexus was only available sim free for

Sense was a big factor in me choosing the Desire, not versus the Nexus One but against the Galaxy S and TouchWiz. That was kind of a no brainer...

The Nexus One was never a viable option here for most here either because it was never available on contract. However, apparently telcos here are about to offer the Nexus S subsidised...

Nah, just got rid of Sense :p

As others have said, the Desire was cheaper than the Nexus & has physical buttons - 2 pluses. Sense looked fine from a distance, but living with it I decided it wasn't for me. No problem, just found something that suits me better - simples!

Sense or no sense, the official update to v2.3 may increase the chance of developers continuing to develop custom ROMs for Desire.

saw somewhr tht gingerbread doesnt allow facebook contact syncing nymore, on the desire s.
ny idea whether it wud be the same for desire also, after gingerbread update??

this says 'NEXUS S and future lead devices'. does tht mean Desire is spared? or only till the gingerbread update for the Desire??

no it will be all gingerbread devices, our old desire wont be spared unfortunately..which is a kick in the teeth as I do like the fact my facebook contacts are in the phonebook..

guys my desire notification bar scrolls down randomly, i dont know why? there might be a bug in my desire's ROM.
Any ideas?
would gingerbread update work or should i sell the phone?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought HTC sense would do this anyway, therefore bypassing goggles row with Facebook?

possibly....BUT ultimately I believe Google would have the last say...and they may say HTC can 'put sense on BUT....' and thats where they may add that they cant allow facebook interaction maybe...

I dunno...I do know standard vanilla android is being totally shot up over this...BUT it may or may not affect HTC sense with 2.3 I dunno...I do know that HTC are releasing two facebook phones both running gingerbread and to be (or already) updated to the 2.4 'fix' of gingerbread...so that said...facebook/sense maybe there...

just have to wait and see..

Amazing we are still getting updates :D
I hope we get the Sense update as well.

Why is everyone complaining about Sense. For someone who doesn't want to root and likes keep it simple, like me, it's useful. I like it. It's true it doesn't have so much options/customizations as other launchers, but it's easy to use.

But this makes me wonder, how much updates can the hardware handle before it becomes outdated? at which point, most phones on the market will be advanced and the updates will be designed for higher-end phones. this thought makes me sad :(
I love my phone, I don't want to have to get a new one because of the product support and updates. I hope my phone lives for a long time :)

Sorry for double posts, my thoughts come in installments XD

So far I have not come across a hardware limitation up to GB v2.3.
I don't know how the v2.4 will feel on Desire...

thanks. but i was wondering, wat abt the facebook contacts n stuff already updated on the phone. they will stay the same even if after the 'gingerbread' update, it may not allow future updates

most likely they wont stay, as any 'update' would most likely wipe the entire system so it would all go..

the only thing we can hope is that HTC manage to keep the facebook contacts via Sense and that Google dont ask them to remove it also due to the ongoing battle between google and facebook over data protection and the ability to import/export...

I don't want to get peoples hopes up. But, I read on AVForums that someone had received confirmation from HTC the desire would be getting the 2.3 update.... and on the 27th march. That's today :) Can't verify the validity of this obviously, but it's certainly possible. :D

actually you could verify...you can hit "check for updates" the phone will STILL do its checking and let you know if it found any....you just cant install them..

and no....we havent got it yet...I just checked...still zippo :D:p

There was already a confirmation that Desire is getting v2.3 officially.
However, this was supposed to happen end of Q2, only after Incredible S, DHD and Desire Z were updated. So, I doubt very much that Desire gets this update in March (even in April). Unless, HTC want's to pull up a stunt against Samsung in the race against SGS update, or Votafone wants to be on spotlight (like their update for Desire and G1)...

I've long abandoned sense. Firstly, because I wanted to root to get more space. Then, because I found other (in my opinion) better roms like Miui and other Sense Mods, and now because I wanted some gingerbread, so I installed oxygen and gingervillain :)

But, I'm tempted to move back once stock sense gets 2.3.

I nandroid restored my 2.29.405.5 last night and got a system update prompt, attempted to download but couldn't find the download and it wouldn't install via recovery. Before yesterday there was no update prompt.

I have HTC desire and would. be interested in upgrading to gingerbread, does anybody have any new news on whether or not there will be an official release?

I have customized my phone quite a bit though. maybe even to the point where i wouldn't need gingerbread. i am running adw launcher and also better keyboard 8 and handcent sms. i like these apps and how they work alot. but would i notice a difference by upgrading to gingerbread? i guess i would get the crt style screen off, but what else? are there improvements under the hood? improved latency? or are there any upgrades to gingerbread/sense ui that would make me want to giveup some of my customizations?
