HTC Desire : Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3

I have customized my phone quite a bit though. maybe even to the point where i wouldn't need gingerbread. i am running adw launcher and also better keyboard 8 and handcent sms. i like these apps and how they work alot. but would i notice a difference by upgrading to gingerbread? i guess i would get the crt style screen off, but what else? are there improvements under the hood? improved latency? or are there any upgrades to gingerbread/sense ui that would make me want to giveup some of my customizations?

ok well first of all you could speak to me like a real human being instead if telling me to read the fing manual, second of all, i dont believe there exists a rooting manual, and thirdly you didnt present me with any good reason as to why i would root my phone, so mayne you have all the time in the world to read up a whole bumch of information and do factory resets and try different roms, i dont. of course if it was worth my while for the duration i jave my phone i migjt. but i have yet to see any worthwile reasons. which is why i posted here asking about that, and to which end your post did not help.

maybe you didnt mean to be a dick, but rtfm is a real dick thing to say. thanks for the info anyways good to know its not easy to brick the phone, still seems like a waste of time to me.

IMO, and I'm typing this with a smile on my face.

I can install as many apps as I want thanks to root. I currently have over 100 apps installed which add up to about 200mb (includes all adobes, and google inc. apps, skype, fruit ninja, all the angry birds, etc.. many large apps) and still have over 400mb available for apps.

Underclock/Undervolt/overclock thanks to being rooted. Saves me battery and also helps me run cpu intensive games/apps/processes.

Can play around with Dalvik Cache thanks to root, saves space, tweak performance.

I happen to like the customization Cyanogenmod offers and don't find it confusing or annoying at all. I also like being able to flash roms as I please, every time I upgrade roms or try out a new one it feels almost like I've acquired a new phone. Thanks to root.

I can create full nandroid backups thanks to root.

I can run OS updates before they get officially released for the desire, thanks to root. (It's ironic you mention rooting is a waste of time when you want gingerbread, you could have gingerbread if you had root)

I can edit system files, uninstall/install system apps, skin widgets, use terminal emulator to edit build props, thanks to root.

I can install apps that require root access, and some apps get improved functionality if they have root access (switchpro, tasker, theft aware, many many others).

Little cosmetic tweak possibilities, such as changing the font on the phone, changing boot animations and splash screens, etc.. thanks to root

I can go back to stock if I want.

Many other things I probably forgot to mention, this is off the top of my head.

Also, there's no manuals as such, but there's so SO many tutorials online and on this forum, as well as support threads that to be honest you're coming across as someone who can't work out how to use google... It's very easy to find lists of the advantages of rooting, opinions, people's experiences as well as guides and support threads if you google it...

It's a shame you don't have the time to look into rooting (but funnily have the time to post questions here), but oh well, I guess you'll have to stick to stock because rooting does take some time and reading. Hopefully you'll get official release for your phone soon.

Wow, I really didn't mean to get a reaction like that. RTFM to me means just make sure you read the documentation before jumping in and wrecking something, its not ment as an insult. MSYRTM (Make Sure You Read The Manual ;-), either way, I do apoligize.

There is a sticky in this forum on how to root. Most of the reasons I rooted and flashed are (and these are my reasons, not nessesarily yours):

- total control/customization over the phone.
- gain a bit of battery life (I estimate 15-20% gain just by switching to GingerVillain alone).
- keep up with the latest OS instead of waiting for my provider for the update (which may or may not happen).
- install what I want.
- gain app space with A2SD.
- try different ROMs to see how they operate, I'm a technical person and enjoy trying things out.

Whatever you decide, it is your phone. Even if you do not root/flash, Android is still a fantastic system.
 
whoaa android .... kinda respect your stuff ha ha ...anyway Im kinda newbie on all this rooting process. Actually kinda keen to upgrade my htc desire hd to 2.3 and i guess I had to be root in order to upgrade right? Can anyone maybe have a link that guide/process me on how to root my dhd and upgrade to 2.3 at the same time. I heard once you root your phone there a lot of stuff that can be done on your phone.
 
Desire HD is a completely different process. I also believe it is Android version specific as to whether it works or not.

The Deire HD has its own forum with a rooting subforum which has posts explaining how to do this.

I'm guessing the reason LECTER asked is because you would be able to run 2.3 gingerbread right now if you were (as many of us here currently are doing).

Added the benefits that LifeonMTV pointed out.

But it isn't something you should jump lightly into by any means.

2.3 is not a huge departure from 2.2 to be honest. Move to SD for apps is a little better (moves more), nice little battery graph in about phone that helps marry drain with cause a little better and many under-the-hood alterations

My 2 cents: Anyone who hasn't got the patience and time to invest to read and learn about a subject such as rooting shouldn't even THINK about attempting it. It's YOUR phone you're playing with, and it's YOUR responsibility to understand FULLY what you're trying to do and how to do it.

Other people kindly provide guides showing you the steps, but that doesn't replace the responsibility of the user to understand every step of the guide.

There's no substitute or shortcut when it comes to understanding the subject.

Hear Hear! Nice to have someone who does not want to invalidate their guarantee (or completely nacker their phone). Fine for those in the know but for many, it is too big a risk.

i heard that the official OTA upgrade to 2.3 android has already been aired on 4th may for HTC desire HD and htc desire S. well, i saw couple of videos on youtube of htc desire running gingerbread and thats the reason why i bought it. now i have tried my best to look over internet to find a way for an upgrade but all in vein.
can anyone please suggest a solution or inform about any official OTA upgrade date for htc desire ??

Any news on the update for the Desire? I read about the upgrade for the Desire HD and mistakenly posted the following in that forum, but the frustration still applies. Unless I'm mistaken, Android 2.3 has been out for more than 5 months!

I have an unbranded HTC Desire (bought from Amazon and with an Orange "SIM only account" SIM). Having struggled with the keyboard in 2.2 and my stubby fingers, I'm frustrated that I've still had no update. I've just powered the phone down, powered it up again and checked for updates several times. My version number is reported as 2.2 and it keeps telling me "No updates available"...
 
Not sure what the keyboard comment has to do with anything.

The vanilla non-sense Roms get an updated keyboard. It's a bit better than before. It also borrows a few extras from the HTC keyboard .. a keyboard HTC sense Roms already have

As far as I am aware, there's no change keyboard wise for HTC users.
 
There are also many replacement keyboards on the market. The android apps forum here has a favourite keyboard thread if you want to see other people's impressions.

Desire is an older phone now, so won't be first in line for GB upgrade.
 
Thanks for the info. I read that the keyboard was improved in 2.3, along with various other things like speed and memory usage. If the standard one is the same in the upgrade, maybe I'd be better off looking for a keyboard app.

Hadron, surely the "first in line" phones got their 2.3 upgrades months ago?

Oh, I believe the desire will get it, and hopefully not have to wait as long as the hero did for Froyo. But that example was sort of my point. And HTC devices didn't have GB 5 months ago, just the Nexus series (and modified devices such as mine).

As SUroot has said, it's the android keyboard which was improved, but an OTA will presumably have the HTC keyboard instead. Since there isn't a calibration option with the android keyboard you might not find it an improvement - these things are very personal.
