HTC Desire : Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3

Just wondering, HTC's come out with the RUU for Gingerbread now, should I root and get an awesome ROM or update? I'm in a dilemma here.. What I really want is the new Sense lockscreen (the one with the apps)..
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance! :)

I dont think theres any difference in the gingerbread version. It uses the same old version of sense... If you want newer sense stuff, you will have to root.

i upgraded to 2.3 on my desire last week but not really a fan of it and my battery is deading too quickly when it use to last at least 12 hours with auto sync switched on for gmail.

i dont find that 2.3 gives extra space...i have probably got less to play with.

is there anyway to root 2.3 and install a custom rom?

thanks

Oh for crying out loud, stop bleating.

Who says it has a lifecycle of 12 months?
Has yours suddenly stopped working with the advent of 2.3? - No
Did HTC say "we promise that we will release every future OS upgrade to the Desire for at least the next two years" - No
Are you free to root if you really want it that bad? Yes

Face it, phones change fast. Accept the fact that any phone will be out of date in a year. I'm happy to have a 24 month contract, but no way would I accept a 36 month one.

People around here are acting like a bunch of spoilt kids.
[/RANT]

Also, it quite makes me chuckle to see everyone saying they will switch to the SGS2. Now I might be remembering this wrong, but I'm sure I recall a huge wave of people getting very upset indeed when Samsung delayed releasing FroYo for the SGS, and I was being smug as I had it on my Desire...

Pipe down. I am allowed to have an opinion. When I bought MY phone, I was promised upgrades to the phones OS.

If a company is releasing a phone into a market they should know how their suppliers are distributing, so if they know in the UK most mobile companies dont do 12 month contracts, then they shouldnt tell us after 12 months that your phone is old news. I know that technology moves fast, but is it to much to ask to have a phone that moves on with the times.

And finally, rooting should not be an option. It is clearly against my warranty so I shouldnt have to depend on it.

I gotta ask, who promised you upgrades?

if that was a network provider, then they only did this to get you to buy....as many have commented on this thread and others....Network providers, especially in this country are damn ruthless, unscrupulous bastards who don't care what you buy as long as they tie you in.

Though I will say, thank god the EU banned 36 month contracts here....otherwise it would be a big world of hurt for many. Saying that, im on a 24 month contract and cant only change handset, a 106 days or so before the end of the 24 months....

As to manufacturers not knowing bout the UK's 'few 12 month contracts', well yes I will agree partly in this....but as you said yourself, tech moves fast, so fast that once one product hits the shelves then its already obsolete as they are working on its replacement(s). So for HTC to have covered the Desire *THIS* long, is actually something of a big thing. Hell Nokia were STILL releasing new firmwares for the VERY old, 5800 music phone (though this kind of cover is rare really).
You have to look at it from a business point of view, its not cost effective to really keep supporting an 'older' phone when the public want 'bigger, faster etc'. Granted though I know 'most' of the market don't care bout new, companies will always look to the ones that *DO*....just look at Apple, rumoured to be releasing the iPad3 (supposedly) in september months after the second one came out...as well as the iPhone 4 white version months before the iPhone 5, of which the same people who bought an original 4, bought the white, will only buy the 5 too.....its called consumer demand and its sickening at times to see things operate that way.

All that said, I will agree that companies should support products for longer and in noway is this post a dig at anything you said....cos I agree with you...even about the rooting argument...we shouldn't really have to break warranty to get the most out of the phone if it a) was too locked down, b) upgrades don't do what you want etc.....

But then again, I bought 2 cheap bookcases from argos and cut holes in the back board so I can run game console cables and speaker cables through them, because buying bookcases that HAVE either no back board or purpose built for that usually cost a fortune....so you know we see this kind of "break warranty for full use of product" everywhere really...

I dunno where I was going with this lol

You have to be wary with pretty much everyone. My first Android was the original Galaxy (i7500). That was stuck on 1.5 with no update from Samsung apart from a very small handful of countries that got 1.6. No explanation why the UK didn't get it. The phone could obviously handle it. I was uber bitter about it at the time, promised I'd never get another Samsung phone. Still, O2 swapped it for a Desire which was nice. May try a Samsung in the future if they stop making them so darned plastic.

That's one of the reasons I hated the Samsung Jet. The phone itself was blindingly fast for a feature/dumb phone, running a 800mhz chip inside and lovely AMOLED Screen....but was just too damn plastic :/

Still wondering after reading through a lot of posts here... has anyone really DONE the rooting og official Gingerbread?

I had no trouble installing Gingerbread on HTC Desire with the supplied instructions from HTC, but I am not really happy with the space, speed and force closes after the update. I read a lot of places that I will not be able to downgrade to Froyo or rooting. So, has anyone risked their phone and tried?

EDIT: Found the post in the "All things root"-section. Now I just have to conjure up the courage to go through with it.

>force closes after the update.<

For what it's worth -- and it may be very little -- I had some trouble with forced closes and general odd behaviour after moving from 2.2 to 2.3 but they all completely disappeared after carrying out factory resetting. I've been using two handsets for a couple of weeks since upgrading and resetting and haven't had any anomalies on either.

I also noted worse battery life on one of the handsets with 2.3 but that improved dramatically after a second factory reset and it now seems slightly better than with 2.2.

I have one gmail acct installed, using ms exchange active sync. I'am getting constant errors. the error being that it is exchange is constantly checking gmail and then it errors, and i clear it, or confirm the gmail acct, it goes away. Then out of the blue, it starts constanting checking again eventually erroring again until i clear or confirm it again....... very annoying............. any fix for this ?

Thanks!

Hi,
after installing official gingerbread update it was impossible to S-OFF and Root the phone.

I tryed using Unrevoked3 (ver. 3.32).

But I was able to do that in this way.

Using Revolutionary (Revolutionary) ver. 04pre4 I was able to S-OFF my HTC Desire GSM.
It worked fine even if it's still a beta.
This install even Recovery Tools (clockwork)

After that I have downloaded Cyanogenmod and I've installed it following official instruction with clockwork method.

At the end my desire il full rooted, S-OFF, with Recovery Tools and Cyanogenmod7 installed.

It work great, it's another world then stock rom.
I've moved all apps on SD card and I have no more memory problems.

Hope to help you.

Bye,
Fabrix

Well, I updated to 2.3 two weeks ago. Only to find that my phone's been crashing about five times a day. Mainly when using internet, but it can happen at any point at all.

The phone isn't rooted. Anyone else had similar trouble?

Oh, wait a minute, maybe this will sort out my crash problems? I'll give this a go

That's something I always do now as a part of my update regimen. I found it fixes most little glitches and inconsistencies. I do the reset a short while after an update so I can check the new setup first and then reset.

While it's a bit of a hassle as you need to download your apps and widgets again, and setup the homescreens, and some settings, but it wipes the tablet clean and removes any residual data that may interfere with the update. I do the same with my phones, update, check the update for function, then do a factory reset to wipe the phones clean and setup again.
:)

I used reware backup thankfully, still took well over an hour. I'll need to wait a day or so to see if it plays up again- I have noticed that friend stream is still a bit funny. Wipes all updates then shows em a second later.....I do hope that's all, that I can live with. Crashing every hour or so? Not so much!

I've definitely got a bit more space now since I did that. Maybe it was a low memory thing?

Fingers crossed....

Damn, just crashed again. Exiting internet by hitting the home button, white HTC screen. That's exactly the problem I've been having the past week.

B'dy marvellous :-/

let's say that this gingerbread will be uot for htc desire, are we going to get a notification (on the mobile phone) that a software update is available or not?

GB for Desire is already out, but only via the HTC developer website. You will not get a notification on your phone, as it is not an "update for the masses".

As Fishyweb pointed out, the recent 2.3 Gingerbread update was not "Over The Air" update via the phone itself, but an RUU update from the HTC Developer Website.

It is not really intended as an update for everyone, mainly for developers, as HTC themselves have stated they had to remove some parts due to saving ROM space to make it fit into an update.

Some people have also reported numerous problems from installation to ongoing issues with internet etc. Also as far as im aware, upgrading to the 'Official' 2.3 update removes anyway to Root the phone after the update.

If you wanted to update to 2.3 without any problems , I would suggest heading over to the "Rooting" section here and reading all you can on rooting and installing custom ROM's, that way you can get a version of 2.3 ROM that would suit what you want as well as being able to easily replace it if you have problems.

Well fishy, I did say "as far as im aware" :D I haven't really checked into the status of rooting the official 2.3 as I never bothered with it...I've been rooted/rom'd for ages now and sit with GingerVillian anyway..

something the matter Dan? ;):D

It continues. While I was away on holiday and in need of the camera, TWICE the phone crashed. And not in a 'forced close' way. No. The whole handset shut down and took an age to restart.

I realise that HTC state that this should only be done by developers, which I am not. Surely however they shouldhave released software that WORKS for all rather than this buggy mess?

I tried a factory reset and it didn't work. What other recourse do I have now? None, I expect
