HTC DROID Eris OS 2.1v3 download

how do I get HOME to be my default?

When I go to APPLICATIONS > HOME, I can't clear any data, etc.. which is what I did in the past.

Thanks

you wanna go to htc sense in the manage applications section and clear the defaults for that. then hit the home button and you should be prompted to select a home and have the option to check for default.

repeat steps if you want to go back to sense.

the only thing that worries me about doing it that way is that what if gmail contacts get overridden by my phone, which would be blank of all contacts? then ill have nothing and no way to recover the majority. that would really kind of suck, no? or is there a way to force the sync to favor gmail instead of the phone?

As I mentioned, if you setup a new 2.1 installation, it will pull your Gmail contacts down into a blank phone. It's only if you start deleting contacts AFTER that sync that you could create a problem.

The simple solution is to spend a little time editing your contacts in Gmail, and get them all the way you want them. Then, run a .csv export and save your newly edited contact file on your PC somewhere, just in case you mess something up. Then it's a simple matter of wiping your phone AND Google contacts at the same time, restoring the backup to Google and then re-syncing your phone.

Instead of HOME, go to HTC Sense and then clear defaults, then when you go back to Home, you'll get the prompt to select a default.

one question, one issue -
question: can i wipe the contacts on my phone without doing a factory reset or reflash?
issue: i cant view the vast majority of my contacts because of the force close nightmare.

is there a way to view contacts without using the 'people' app...maybe right off the phone's memory?

The only thing that I have found to nitpick about, and believe me it's nothing compared to some of the major bugs that others have deal with, but the new calculator on 2.1 sucks compared to the calculator on 1.5. If that's all I have to end up complaining about then I am all set! Thanks to Caddyman for the newest leak.

Really? I think the basic calculator is the same as on 1.5, but maybe I'm not remembering correctly. There is an added bonus that you get a scientific calculator if you turn the phone to landscape.

Yes, you can, but you'll need to make the exported .csv file in Gmail. JUST IN CASE. Syncing can be a funny business, mostly it's based off time stamps and if Google sees you deleted contacts most recently on your cell phone, it can (and will) delete them from Gmail.

As I posted before - there is a relatively simple way to do this. Get your contacts the way you want them in Gmail. Export to .csv. Delete all contacts from your Eris. Sync with Google. One of two things will happen - either it will pull your contacts down, or it will erase them from Google. If it pulls them down, you are done. If it erases them from Gmail, then simply import your .csv file into your Contacts in Gmail, and they will them sync to your phone.

As for viewing them directly, you may be out of luck there. I make shortcuts directly to my top 20 people and put them on a home screen to avoid the People app. It's better in 2.1v3, but it's still slow for a modern phone book and it's rather a PITA to deal with. Sounds like you need to delete everything out of your address book and start with a clean sync.

Oh ok, with the old calculator you could get to the scientific calculator by pushing the menu button. Still it isn't nearly as cool looking.

As far as switching back and forth between home and sense goes, after clearing the default as long as you don't set either home or sense as your default then every time you hit the home button it lets you choose which to use. This is useful because you can easily get to both and decide which one you want as your default without having to go to the app manager each time you want to change. Play with them for awhile then set the one you like best as the default. It's a nice feature.

I really like the new leak, I've been using it for a few days at this point and can't find a single thing to complain about. I've also installed Swype and 2.1 Gallery and haven't had any issues - no FC, no hang, no lag and my redial problem seems to have gone away as well.

Alright, the only problem I seem to be having is with the browser.

1. Pinch Zoom, sometimes it works, most of the time it takes me 4,5,6 tries to get it to work.

2. When I clink on a link in my gmail to open a webpage, it pops up the browser like it should but then goes straight back to the email. I have to click it 4,5,6 times to get it to finally open the link. This is with all websites in email I click on.

Hopefully v4 will fix this.

Hey all, first post. I installed 2.1v3 a few days ago and been very happy with everything so far. The only app I couldn't find in the Market was Skype Mobile, but I was able to download it from a barcode from another thread on this site. Also giving Swype a try and like it as well.

Fore some reason the built in stock market app, Yahoo I think, is not working at all. Anyone else have this problem? No big deal though.

Also, Facebook app updated and then wouldn't work. I uninstalled the update and the original version is running fine.

Been running v3 for a day or so now and I still have the dialer lag issue and the forced miss call issue. In other words, my phone starts to ring in my pocket, I reach for it, pull the phone out and the phone just ignores the call...VERY frustrating if you ask me.

As far as everything else goes, v3 allows the Gallery_flan.apk to switch from landscape to portrait mode without the huge screen mess...that's nice. And, all my apps that couldn't connect to the web in v2 now can...so that's nice as well!

But that dialer/answer issue needs to go!

I noticed that my phone will ring normal and then switch to a much more quite ring (almost unable to hear) once I pick the phone up. I checked the settings and there is a setting for this. Maybe this is causing your phone to ignore the call. Try turning it off.

Settings > Sound & Display > Quiet ring on pickup

I ended turning mine off as well because the motion from me just walking or even driving down the road would instantly switch it to quiet and I would miss calls.

Anyone that's installed Gallery know how to make it the default (or not the default) movie player ? At this point, I don't care if I use the default/built-in movie player or Gallery, but checking the box to make it the default and selecting one or the other just doesn't "stick".

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that. But I discovered my issue is whoever calls me the phone rings three to four times on their end before it even rings once on my phone. I just reboot phone and issue seems to go away temporarily...

I had no idea about the quiet ring on pickup option...I'm glad I got that turned off now! I am a traveling salesman so I would never receive calls because I guess the motion of the car would silence phone almost instantly!

Try this.

There's a post in the sticky thread about improving battery life that talks about going to the ##PST menu to change this. I don't remember who posted, but he gets all the credit.

1. dial ##PST (##778) [password is 6 zeroes: 000000]
2. choose "Edit Mode"
3. choose "Modem Settings"
4. choose "Slot Cycle Index"
5. select 1 (it is 2 by default). That should give you a nice balance between ringing and battery life.
6. hit OK.
7. hit Menu and then "Commit Modifications"

Now your phone should start ringing sooner!

It may negatively impact your battery life. Maybe give it a try, you can always change it back.

Ok, one thing I just noticed with 2.1v3, I added a FOLDER on my home page called E-Mail, however, when I open the Folder and go to add my various e-mail progams in the folder, it states that there in no room on my home page to add a program, however, the folder is empty...any ideas?

I've rebooted and deleted the folder and re-added the folder, but still the same error.

Thanks!

Nobody knows for certain, but you would like get the OTA.....

so i would still get it and is there any negative side to this

Well, look at it this way, there are a few negatives with leaving your phone the way it is, for some people. I've never really had any bugs on my phone either way. But some were with 1.5, that were fixed with 2.1. Some the other way around.

I did it, and I'm overly cautious for the most part. I waited till last week after leaks had been out for a very long time.

If I were you, I'd think about WHY you would want to do it though. If you're fine with what you have, you may just not wanna do it. If you want more features, a GPS, a quicker phone, etc, then you could go ahead and do it.
