Hey Guys,

I'm planning on upgrading my phone to the EVO 3D I currently have a blackberry and this will be my first HTC. I'm on the fence on getting the EVO 3D now because of this heat issue. My questions are did any of you that had the previous EVO 4G have the same problem? ANy advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!

Let's clarify this quickly.

There is not a heat issue.

Some people have had defective phones that got too hot - happens with every make and model.

Some service rep ran his mouth and misspoke and made us all believe there was a danger with the charging circuit and that it wasn't just a few, it was a design issue.

I personally checked the phone's hardware schematic and looked up the data sheet for the chip doing doing charging control - and novox77 and the OP looked up battery patents to see if the stated new charging features were supported by existing batteries. They all line up, one to one. And then this post at the top of the page confirms that everything is working, it's not just theory or schematics.

Plus - the vast majority of users report no issues.

And mine - gets no hotter than my Evo did, depending what I use it for.

Snag your new Evo 3D, look for any new product defects, like you would any phone (or car, or washing machine) - and after any kinks, if any, are ironed out - enjoy the heck out of your new phone! ;) :)

PS - Anything you've read on news blogs about this "issue" I 100% guarantee started with this thread. I notified Phandroid, they ran the story on my say-so before I had all the facts and the rest copied it from there.

Stuff happens.

Thanks for clearing that up. I will get my Evo 3D. Hope everything works out.

What is the normal operating CPU temperature for the EVO 3D? Mine runs at 98 to 103. Is that normal?

Sent from my HTC EVO 3D

My EVO 3D runs cool mostly except when i use navigation or Google Maps. I was using google maps yesterday for about 10 minutes on 3g and my temp went up to like 107... That's about as hot as its ever gotten. The phone has been great, but i'm a little concerned about this heat "issue". Oh, and i'm using Battery Status to monitor.

*shakes fist* darn you kids using Fahrenheit! Fahrenheit is for the weather channel. Celsius is for computers!

Am I the only one who gets lost when people talk about the weather channel in Celsius and computers in Fahrenheit? If you told me it was 38 C out, I'd have no clue if that was good or bad. And if you say you're phone is at 109F, I have no clue, either. Reverse those units of measure, and I understand completely.

is it normal for my phone to get really hot after 20 minutes of playing a monster ate my homework? then i got a call and the phone was white hot, I mean it literally hurt my ear.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to tell my story and get some feedback. First of all, my 3VO get's hot everytime I use it. I actually never let it heat up past 40 C (104 F) but I am sure that it would keep getting hotter and hotter if I didn't turn the screen off or hold it up to my air conditioner to cool down. Like others, I bought my device on the morning of release and liked it so much that I ended up buying another device for another line on my account. And unfortunately the other device also overheats!

But, today I finally called Sprint and spoke with a technician and they recommended that I get a replacement device! What a hassle, but it needs to be done!

So basically my question is do you think I should replace my 3VO if it overheats everytime I use it? Do all 3VO's overheat like mine?

This is what I usually have running at any given time: HTC live wallpaper, auto sync, mobile network, screen on 30%, short timeout, and a few widgets.

Also I have pinpointed where the majority of the heat is eminating from. The majority of the heat is coming from the motherboard behind the cameras, not from the battery. Although since the entire phone is basically a heatsink the heat is transferred to the battery.

I've been using my phone 5 hours straight, on charger, posting, modding and chatting with people, non-stop, all night.

My phone is at (sorry Jer) 98.6 degF. Familiar number? It's my hand. (37)

Between that and Sprint warning you to replace it - you might consider replacing it.

Thanks for your input and reassurance. I am going to replace it tomorrow...

Probably not. Get Battery Monitor Widget, it'll show you temperatures. If it gets over 42 C (107.6 F), then I'd be concerned and try to exchange it. My phone likes playing around the 38-40 C range, as a reference.

I just wanted to update that I've been getting temps around 83 and 84 indoors. When I'm outdoors in 110 degree weather it usually runs hotter like the temps I listed above; but that's totally to be expected. =)

Ok this morning I woke up and my phone was 128 degrees F. I literally dropped the phone on the bed it was so hot. My house temp was 75 degrees. I sat it on my mini fan and it cooled off after about 5 minutes. My 30 days have passed, but I think I should get a new device. What's you guys opinion.

Wow that's hot, mine hit 108 the other day and I was a bit worried (although, I was using it, and it was in the 90s). Best of luck getting a new one (if you go that route, I think I would try at least). I can't imagine Sprint being too helpful, but maybe through HTCs warranty?

Ambient temperature plays a large role into this I've found. Where I live it's routinely over 110 degrees. So then when I'm outside and my phone is running at 102 or 103 (or higher) in my hand I'm not surprised at all. Inversely, when I'm indoors and have my Air Conditioning set at 75 my Evo3D often runs at 75-80 when I leave it set on the coffee table or the couch. When I pick it up & hold it in my hand indoors after a certain period of use the temp usually rises to around 98-ish. Why? Well because it's in my hand and our body temperature is 98.6 lol... Makes sense!

so ive kept track of it for a bit using Battery Monitor Widget.. from what i can tell during charging at night (overnight charge using the supplied charger just run usb isntead of from the wall). It seems to run fine under 4200 while charging until it gets to about 95ish, which is when it kicks it up from the 4200 range to 4350 (consistent during 95-100%). then during the trickle down it lowers and when it starts back up at 95 again it goes back up to 4350..

so i guess im no exception to what everyone else has, except that the temp seems to stay consistent at 30.2ish, which doesnt seem to be high.. i havent felt the battery/phone during the charge as im sleeping when its charging, but in the morning it doesnt seem hot or anything.

i do have a seido case on it, the phone gets warm at times during decent use, but doesnt seem to get overly hot.. this is my experience atleast.

Oh blinding light, oh light that blinds,
I cannot see, look out for me.

This is why for difficult issues I always go by email - and ask for Tier 3 support the instant this sort of dribble occurs, because with a tracking number and a written record, you can.
