For those asking if 'really hot' is too hot, unfortunately, we don't know what 'really hot' is. Please post temperatures. If you have trouble finding temperatures, the app 'battery monitor widget' will show you clearly on the top.

I don't like my phone exceeding 45 C (113 F). That's what I consider 'too hot'. 40-45 C (104 - 113 F) is 'really hot' and I make sure to let the phone cool.

I got my phone in July and its been acting weird the 2nd wk I got it but I didn't think it was anything major. Camera locks up, phone freezes, etc. Then the next wk or so I've been experiencing heating issues, battery indicator shows 103 or 104. But now this week major battery drain! Plus battery has been over 104 F.

Just yesterday it was 118 F and stating overheating. I got it fr Amazon so I contact them and they are replacing it. Hopefully the next one won't have the same issue. :(

My battery is at 114.8 degrees right now. Its hot out side and I'm online with my phone. But just wondering how hot is considered dangerously hot? I'm sure this temp I'm at right now is not real good for my phone. Just wanted to know if there is a figure to go by.

I would think that is way too hot. Are you charging your phone? Or did your phone just jump in temp?

No, not charging it. I'm outside and its almost 100° and I'm streaming video. Probably not ideal conditions for this activity right now.

My phone will not charge at all, switched out batteries.. no go.. LED light still flashes red and green. Power down to let the phone charge while off, no dice either.. The phone is cool and isn't even warm at all.. I have no idea what could be causing this

hi,
need more info.

are you rooted?

using the stock battery or aftermarket?

has this always happened?

if not, when did you start to notice?

do you have voltage monitoring software? there are some suggested in this thread.

On wall charger (HTC supplied):

4330 mV - seen as high as 4342 mV
87.1 F

But... has anyone look at the actual voltage at the battery terminals with a proper meter? Can we trust the Voltage reading as being accurate? Not that it's not, but has anyone checked? I might do this later today if none chimes in that they find it accurate.

hi,, i downloaded battery indicator, please can somebody post the ideal temperature of the device while not charging.. and is the heat caused by the battery or it's caused by another parts of the device?

I got the EVO 3d when it first came out. I started to notice my cell phone gets every hot. I really didnt think it was anything. Two months later my cell phone was still getting very hot. Then my cell phone crash. 2 days after that my phone went completely black. I just got an replacement phone on Sept. 25,2011. Last week I was watching Netflix on my cell phone. I got up and my cell phone fell on my stomach. It was very hot. Hotter than every before. I look down and it a red Mark on my stomach. I contract HTC & SPRINT, about this issue with my first evo 3d. HTC escalations team contact me tonight about this problem. Does anyone has any clue how they are going to solve this issue?:(

I was surprised mine got very hot yesterday while listening to locally stored music. It was in airplane mode at the time as well, which makes it even more confusing.

My Evo 3D just crashed yesterday, the crash was precluded by extreme overheating. At first, the phone itself would still boot and receive texts, but with a dead screen (so still utterly useless). When I got home last night, I plugged it into the charger so that when I would take it to Sprint they wouldn't be able to say "oh your battery is dead". When I woke up this morning, the device was completely dead and even when plugged in would not even show the LED indicator that it was charging. When I attempted to turn it on, nothing happened.
I am running MIUI, I'm rooted with S-off using the revolutionary method, and I experienced high temperatures on both stock and various ROMs, both with and without sense (ViperRom, CleanRom, CM7, MIUI). Also, I have experienced shortened battery life over the past month or more. I'm not really posting this to ask for help, as my phone is beyond that and I'll have to take it to Sprint, I'm posting this to better document the issue.

^^ RESPONDING TO POST ABOVE. I recently upgraded from an EVO 4G to its predecessor EVO 3D. A few days ago while talking on my phone, I noticed the earpiece started getting extremely hot to touch... And the only time it cool off was when I remove the battery. I had the phone charging at the time, but..that still shouldn't make the phone went so hot. So, what I did was to reset the phone back to factory default settings, since then I haven't noticed any heat issue thus far. I'm not sure if the issue was caused by an application or just a defective device.

I took the phone to Sprint, and the battery was bad. Also, the screen didn't function due to a damaged circuit board. My theory: Voltage issues in the charger or the phone itself led to the battery becoming damages, which led to the battery doing one massive discharge (which REALLY killed it) and during that discharge, the circuit board became insanely hot and the part that controls my screen was fried. So, it all goes back to the voltage issue.
Rant: Now I have to get a new/refurb Evo 3D, which will undoubtedly come with Hboot-1.5 >:O

Mine did a random reboot in my pocket yesterday and since I have the screen set to stay on until I turn it off manually it got really hot and wouldn't come back on for awhile after a battery pull. Frustrating.

Been having a lot of problems lately. the dreaded red/green alternating overheat warning popping up. randome crashes and lock-ups... Factory reset and still having the issue... Time to take a trip to Sprint...ugh

Mine got hot again today while in my pocket. It was in airplane mode and silent mode, which confuses me. The only new thing on it is the MIUI lockscreen app that just came out. Hopefully it wasn't that, cause it's neato.

Hey guys i noticed my phone was getting warm.. not hot during heavy use and figured id get a temp monitoring app... i want to set it up properly so i was wondering... what are the standard temp ranges for this phone.. Low, primary, and high temps??

3vodroid,

I've moved your post/thread into this one (http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/369982-htc-evo-3d-voltage-heat-issues-5.html#post4143157) since the topics seem to mesh rather well and I'm hopeful the good folks in here will have some good feedback and information for you.

Good luck and welcome to the AndroidForums! :)

Hello !

I got my new phone recently on my birthday, February 14, and up until now everything has been fine.
Last night I was watching videos on my phone while plugged into to a charger. My phone was really hot and after a couple of videos my phone gave me message which said something about switching to ACD charger because of voltage or something....? I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly.
So I'm like, okay I guess I should switch chargers and get off the phone and let it charge. I was replying to a text message before putting the phone away and it started to mess up(froze up, kept sending me back home even though I hadn't pressed the "home" button). Then, i slapped it in the palm of my hand *frustrated*. And she shut off.
I tried to turn it back on but after that....it hasn't been on since last night...Also I wasn't using the charger my phone came with, if that matters.

Please, help me if you can ! Thank you ! >n<

Hello Sonyunii. Welcome!

Well, first of all let's get the "tips" prefix changed to "support," because you're not offering a tip.. *blip* .. there we go. :D

Now, as I read along then came to, "...I wasn't on the charger my phone came with, if that matters," I saw what mattered. ;)

The stock charger is the way to go, or a replacement from the factory, although we do see 3rd party chargers and cables/USB etc doing fine on some devices, we also see the sort of issues you're describing most often with non-stock charging apparatus.

As to remedies for your device's issues.. I'd be inclined to have a factory tech look at it. But you can first try removing the battery and sd card and sim and putting it all back in and then going into recovery mode for a factory data reset. If it boots up you needn't go into recovery, just use the FDR in the privacy menu (I believe that's where it is on the EVO.. look around if not, it's in there somewhere ;)).

If it won't boot up, use the button combination which brings you to the recovery menu and do the FDR from there:

- Remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, then reinsert the battery.

- Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then press and hold the POWER button.

- Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons.

- Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button.

Welcome to android forums!

I can't stress enough to try to use the charger that it came with, what might have happened, the charger might be pushing more amps to the phone than what its designed to hold (1).

If that's the case, there's a chance your battery is damaged now. Does at least the charging light come on when its plugged in?

If not I would suggest as far as to trying another battery.
