HTC Evo 4g stuck in boot loop
so my phone has been rooted for a couple of months now.
i plugged it into my charger 2 days ago, woke up, and it is stuck in the
boot loop. aka white screen"Htc Evo 4g". then it keeps restarting.

i have tried holding down the power/volume down button, and that takes me into the hboot screen. i have selected EVERYTHING in there. and nothing seems to work.

i believe it's a cyanogen mod 7

this is what it says in the hboot screen(at the top)

so when yo get to the hboot screen can you select recovery?

well actually if you can get into hboot then we can try and install a recovery. it might have gotten corrupted.
you can get the recovery here:PC36IMG RA 2.3.zip
here are the instructions:
1.download the file.
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.

Well I was having the same issue with my evo restarting over and over again.

I wasn't able to get into recovery mode as i was getting the red triangle.

I followed your steps to the letter and everything went great. I rebooted the phone after doing a nandroid backup and unfortunately it went right back into the restarting.

Is there any other suggestions that might help.

Thanks

**i probably should give you more info, I originally used unrevoked3 to root my phone. I used this because I wanted the wifi tethering. I have not had any problems for almost 2 years. Then came the rebooting. I tried to fix it with help from the forums, then decided that i was going to get it fixed by Best Buy (I have their insurance) I unrooted it (so I thought) with help from a you tube video. I took it in there and the guy said that I see that you rooted your phone and the problem was a software issue and BB only covers Hardware problems. So I took to the forums again and found this link.

I still have s-off, but I don't have Super User in my apps anymore. Am I still rooted?

Now that I can get into recovery should I find another RUU and if so which one? and put it on my sd card and flash it through recovery mode?

thanks again

Did you originally make the nandroid with Amon-Ra recovery or Clockwork MOD recovery?

If you made the nandroid with Clockwork your nand would bootloop. They are not compatable between the recoveries.

Try to flash a stock rooted rom or mikG from here:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

To be completely unrooted you need S-ON, the stock recovery, and a stock ROM.

Look at the appropriate rooting for dummies guide for information on how to fully unroot

a couple days ago my phone died on me and once i got home to charge it. It was stuck on the white screen for about a whole day! finally i looked up any ways to fix it because it kept repeating the white screen over and over. I pressed recovery once i pressed the volume down, power and now its stuck on the "recovery loop" i have not seen the red triangle and it has been awhile. What should i do?

out of curiosity what rom were you on when this happened?

what is your hboot? what recovery do you have? so you can't access recovery, correct?

Great guide sir!!! I spent like 12 hours searching until finally got to your guide and got my Evo 4g back in business again, all thanks to you. It seems like my recovery was gone and my rom was corrupted preventing my phone to boot, I was stuck in the white screen the "htc evo 4g" logo on it, going no where. But after reading your guide I downloaded the zip recovery file and renamed it as you stated and that did the trick "I was able to get to recovery" and then I just copy a rom in the root of my SD card and flash it thru recovery and my phone is "BACK" yeah...thanks a million!!!

Unfortunately I'm having the same problem but the above method didn't work for me. Now it goes past the 4g screen, but reboots shortly after. I'm rooted on stock rom. I've cleared the cache and reflashed, all with no dice. Any suggestions? I'm ready to just do a fsctory reset

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!
are you wiping dalvik cache and cache? try that first. no need to do a factory reset. you can just try another rom. mikg3.0 is the best rom out there IMHO.

Hello, I need help!

A while back I had rooted my EVO using Unrevoked3 without wiping data. All good there. It's been rooted and I have been using the phone with original stack from Sprint. Today I was doing some reading on flashing with a different ROM and so I decided to create a nandroid backup through ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1. I went into the Hboot menu, selected "Recovery" which took me to the ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1 screen wher I selected "backup and restore" and selected "backup". This process did take few mins and eventually completed. Then I restarted the phone and now it just goes into a reboot loop. The boot cycle moves pass the "Sprint" screen to "4G" screen and then it goes back to the "Sprint" screen again! Not sure why I exactly decided to create the "nandroid' backup but I did (I suppose because I have read that it should be done periodically and before flashing a new ROM perhaps) and I guess either I messed up or something went wrong somewhere.

And now I am stuck in this reboot loop! :-(

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can get back to my current state it would be great as I would love to do that first so that I can completely backup everything.

If that's not possible or not easy, Can I perform "restore" using the above nandroid backup I just did? I read earlier in this thread that nandroid backups are not compatible with Clockwork (not sure if I interpreted that correctly). I am not sure if that's in play here.

Can I just simply go into the ClockworkMod recovery and select the "Restore" option? Would that work?

My hope is that I can get my phone back to working state without having to lose anything (at least I would to try all options before I have to go the route of not being to recover to the current known state).

I hope I have provided all of the info.

Any help would greatly be appreciated it.

Thank you.

Thanks for your prompt response.

If I downgrade, it will wipe everything, correct? I would like to avoid that if possible as I am hoping to get back to my current working state. Is there a way I can get back to what I had first before unrooting?

Thank you again.

ok first if you have recovery then you are still safe no need to try a ruu. try and go into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache and see if that helps.

Ocnbrze,
That did it!!!!! I did both Wipe Cache Partition and Wipe Dalvik Cache options and I was able to get back into my phone (of course it took a very very long time to boot up but that I understand is the result of deleting cache). I for sure learn new stuff..

Just for my understanding, did I do something wrong by creating a nandroid backup using the "ClockworkMod Recovery" process? is that what caused this issue or just a coincidence that cache got corrupted and needed to cleared? I am just asking because once I have everything backed up, I would like to apply a non-Sprint ROM and want to make sure I do it correctly.

Thanks!

well from reading what you initially did was right. not sure what really caused it. i do know that clockwork mod does have a huge history of not wiping very well, but you did not need to wipe in this case. it is possible that the caches were corrupted. not very unsual if that did happen. majority of small issues usually can get fixed by wiping dalvik cache and cache. it is usually the first thing that you will see when someone is responding to a post.

on another note have you consider switching recoveries? i would switch to amon ra 2.3 it is way better then clockwork mod. but all of your nandroid backups will not work with amon ra 2.3 so that it is up to you if you want to switch or not. pretty easy to do. you can get the instructions here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. go to the switching recoveries section.

also check out the how to flash a rom section as well.

Wow, it really pays to read these posts. Last night my HTC Thunderbolt battery died. Plugged it
in over night to charge, when i powered it up this morning i had an exclamation! Inside a triangle and a small blue android. All i could get was the unrevoked menu. Tried everything, reboot and reboot over & over. Then i read wipe cache(s) and voila that fixed it. Thanks to all of thou who care enough to post help responses.

i'm glad everything worked out for you.

one word of caution though. this is the htc evo 4g forum. even though the thunderbolt is similar since it is htc, some thongs are very phone specific. so be careful on what you read and make sure that whatever you do make sure that it is ok for your phone.
