Root HTC EVO 4G with MIUI Rom

When I pull the drop down menu down it only shows USB storage - On/Off and it's currently on.

Under settings/system I have Date & Time / Language & Input / Battery / SD Card / USB (if I open this only Mount SD card and Ask on connection appear) / Button / Dock / About Phone.

Sorry if I am being difficult. You are all probably thinking this lady doesn't even need a phone! lol I do appreciate your help and patience.

No need to apologize, this is a forum of folks happy to help. :)

But I jumped the gun and tried to get too complicated with the settings advice -- so in that drop down where it's set to "On", tap it, it should let you switch it to "Off". (It needs to be in "charge only" to run the exe file).

I'm still getting that same error after switching the USB storage to off.

So, I am worried I'm going to turn this phone into a $200 brick and that's not ideal.
I am considering sending it back to the guy I bought it off ebay from and having him do the flash.
He also sent me a weblink for another forum and there a poster says "flash to something with sense, call and activate, then flash back to cyanogenmod."

Basically what he's saying is flash to the SENSE ROM, activate, and then flash back?
Since we have figured out I am not a Flasher (ha ha) I am thinking he will have to flash, I'll activate online, then he can flash back and then ship the phone back to me. Am I correct in this thought process?

Unfortunately I don't know anyone locally that would have any idea how to do this either.

So I googled your error and found someone on a different HTC phone but on MIUI with your same problem on this thread. So I think this should work for you as well -- basically they say you need to be in "fastboot" to run the RUU. So you can power off your phone, then hold down volume_down + power until you get that white screen you showed us before.. then choose "FASTBOOT" by pressing the volume down button until it is highlighted, then press the power button.

Does that make sense?

Also, if you can wait, I'd advise waiting for someone more knowledgeable than me like ocn to come back on and confirm I'm sending you in the right direction. :)

Well, if you want to go the route of just flashing a Sense ROM, it's much easier to do than you think, we can really walk you through step by step...

I am willing to do whatever at this point to make this phone work!

If you can walk me through step by step then that would be great. I do like this MIUI after playing with it just trying to find out how to switch to charge only. I will take either at this point. Original stock or super cool techy ROM! I just need a phone, it's screwing my whole world up, no alarm clock, no calendar and no text messaging! lol jk (Really though, how dependant we become on our cell phones?)

I don't have a chat (MSN or yahoo) or anything on my computer but I'm sure I could figure something out to go step by step.

Ok, so we'll go back to the idea of putting you on MikG (a Sense ROM), and then talk about whether you want MIUI after you've activated the phone.

So when I first learned, this page here really helped me:
Main Page - Evorootwiki Look it over.

It's a little outdated, but still helpful. So, to start:

1) Download this file: MikG 3.0
(2) If you downloaded it on your computer plug in your phone’s USB, make sure that USB toggle is “on”, and copy that MikG file from your computer to your SD card (NOT in any folders, just onto the card). Disconnect your phone from the computer.
(3) Power off your phone.
(4) Hold down volume_down + power at the same time until you get that HBOOT screen again. Use the volume_down to scroll to “Recovery” and press the power button to select it.
(5) Watch what text comes up – does it say “Amon Ra 2.3” anywhere? Or Does it say 'ClockWorkMod"?

If Amon Ra, use this guide from that page: "How to flash ROM's in Amon RA"

If Clockwork, use this one: "How to flash ROM's in Clockwork Mod"

Look at that and see if it makes sense. I'll be offline for about an hour and a half, but I'll check in then to see if you feel comfortable with that. And I'm sure others will chime in with help too. We all were novices once! :)

How do I know where I am copying the MikG 3.0 too on my phone?

and also... now that I mention it... how DO I copy from my computer to my phone?

How do I know where I am copying the MikG 3.0 too on my phone?

So, the same way you open a flash drive on your pc? Open your phone on the pc that way (My Computer --> USB Storage or Android Device) -- then just copy and paste that MikG file from your computer onto that drive (just not in any of the folders you see there). Does that make sense?

Ok so when I open the removable disc with my phone plugged into the computer I see:

.android_secure
Android
DCIM
downloaded_rom
LOST.DIR
MIUI

after downloaded in MkG3.0 I have:

data
META-IN
system
boot

Do I just highlight all of those and then move them And which of the above removable disk files do I move them to

Ok, so you do NOT unzip that MikG folder. You're moving that whole thing over to the phone (not into any of those folders), as a zip file.

(As long as you didn't click "extract" or "unzip" at any point, it should still be a zip file -- and it should be called "MikG-v3.0-signed.zip")

Ok it says clockworkMod Recovery V5.0.2.2 at the top of the screen. So that's the step I'm at now. Not sure if you're still on, but I seem to be making it ok so far.

Uht oh! Ok yikes I'm scared. So I'm at step <> Wipe the "data/factory reset"
I highlight that and press power and the "confirm wipe of all user data THIS CANNOT BE UNDONE" comes up with the options of lots of "No's" and one "yes -- delete all user data"

I am to select yes...

So I did, and now I am at <> Now select "Flash .zip from sdcard"

I don't have this exact line, but I do have "install zip from sdcard" or apply update from sdcard.

When i pick "Install zip from sdcard" I then pick "choose zip from sdcard" and the options I have are:
Android
DCIM
LOST.DIR
META-INF
MIUI
clockworkmod
data
downloaded_rom
system

... and this is where I'm stuck. I don't see MikG. Isn't that what I'm looking for

yes you are looking for the file MikG-v3-B2-signed. if you put it on the card it should be there. make sure that you are using the vol up and down buttons to scroll thru the list.

As Ocn Said make sure your using the volume keys to scroll through the list. Also your on Clockwork so Make sure you wipe really really well. Going from AOSP to Sense on a system thats not fully clean will cause issues. you can physically go and wipe everything except sdcard 3 times. then flash mikg. Also note that the first boot may take a bit longer than your used to. This is normal. If you run into any issues take a deep breath and come here and we will work those out.

Also its best you do this work instead of sending it to someone. Main reason is what if they move or die? This way you will have an idea of what you need to do and can handle it calmly. Ofcourse you can always pm any of us and we will be happy to help. Your two best friends at this point is reading our guides and staying rooted. Our guides are the only ones on the net with a masssive and awesome support system. :D

So, I just got back on and saw your posts -- did you find the MikG file? If not, I wonder if you accidently put it on one of those folders above... I've never used clockworkmod, so maybe someone else here can confirm that you can just "select" each of them to look inside....

I do not find just a file that says MkG3.0 on the phone. I mever unzipped or extracted & When I moved it all over I highlighted all those files I told ya before showed up on my computer after download & moved them directly into the drive. The individual files that showed up initially after the download all show up. But no MkG.... :-/

Hmm, so it sounds like you moved the inside of the MikG file, instead of the the entire zip file. (What you should have moved over was just one file called "MikG-v3.0-signed.zip").

All is not lost though - we're going to try to move the file over again based on the description of clockworkmod here.

So, in that menu on your phone where you wiped data, do you see the option "mounts and storage"? If so, plug the phone back into the computer, and choose that, then select "mount USB storage." Then you should see your phone show up as a drive again on your pc-- this time, just right-click on that "MikG-v3.0-signed.zip" on your computer, select copy, then right-click in an empty space in that folder that is your phone drive, and paste. Then close that folder.

Then back on your phone, choose that "mount USB storage" (or I assume it will say "Unmount USB storage"). And then go back to the menu and flash the zip.

Make sense?

Ok I'm back, sorry about that.
I definitely waited until the transfer was complete. I'm thinking maybe I just transferred the parts of MikG into the phone... I don't know. But it looks like it's there in parts instead of as a whole.

I've mounted the SDcard and it is now showing on the PC. And I'm moving the actual Zip file over to the sd card now as you described by dropping it into a blank space...

Should I remove the files I moved over last night

It's now flashing the MikG :D :D woot woot!!
I'm still crossing my fingers though.

So after this flashes will I be able to activate on Sprint or is there more I will need to do

btw, sorry my question mark key doesn't work on my laptop. I really do know there should be questions marks at the end of those two questions. ;)

Yes remove those and after you have flashed and gone through the process of setting it up you will want to do a Nandroid. This will keep you from having to pull out hair later on if things go wrong. Once you get the phone activated you should give it a few hours before changing things like the ROM or Kernel. I just think its best practice.

I'm not sure if there are any english teachers/majors in here so nobody will scorn you for not using question marks :D

And Congratulations you are not only flashing a ROM you are becoming more Tech Savvy :D

Awesome, so glad it worked!

So yes, once the flashing is done, restart, then when it loads up, let it load for 10 min before unlocking, then pull up the ring to unlock, sign in, and then call sprint and activate it!
