Root HTC EVO Design 4G - All Carriers - Root guide

Dear SS,
Yes, I am trying to gain root access expecting to somehow play with the WiMAX / EV-DO MAC addresses etc. to have the phone to work on a local WiMAX / EV-DO carrier here. Can you guide me plz. Also I was unable to perform the root, as you can see a few posts up, I was getting an error message. HELP !! :'(

Hello I got my EVO 4G unlocked alright, and changed the CID in the Zip file
Now it's booting into the HBOOT and says
" parsing...[PH441MG.zip] "
then it stopped ....
what should I do ?

Refer to my post with my tool it will help out with the errors you have and anyone else. Just read the instructions put forth inside the tool.

Which method, or are you referring to the new tool that 2fast mentioned? I will soon incorporate that into the guide as a method.

I do have work today, but am working on the guide. Will include a section for the new 2fast tool.

Sorry I've been slow to update guys, recently married and moved to a different state, been focusing on getting settled in. Lots to do.

Does anyone here have voicemail notifications working with Boost mobile? If you do please fill me in on how you get this working!

Thanks

Nearly every user here is a cdma user, if a gsm user it is a user out of the states. If you want gsm in the states it won't happen till the lock is figured out. Where someone will have to figure it out, in which it will likely not be me as I have no need to. States could be locked out from the firmware to the radio. If radio it will need to be s-off'd.

As for flashing to another carrier, The only way that will happen is cloning another phone from that said carrier. Where I don't know the rules here about talking about it. So you likely won't get info there till it is said ok by the staff to talk about. If already on that carrier it is a different story. Though what carrier is it you plan to use wimax on? As I only know of one which is what the design was designed for.

Hi,
1st of all, I am using HTC EVO Design 4G (Sprint).
2ndly I am using a GSM carrier & I'm in Pakistan. (Works beautifully without a problem). The reason for me to get this particular model was just to have dual option i.e. GSM(2G) and CDMA(EV-DO & WiMAX). In detail, GSM here is 2G (3G to be launched in a few months), where as we have an operator for EV-DO(Data only) and a couple of operators for WiMAX (again Data Only). My idea was to have the voice on GSM and use CDMA as Data carrier. Like I mentioned CDMA carriers here don't offer voice, but give out USB dongles etc. I have an EV-DO and also a WiMAX usb dongle. I'm sure its not as easy as mapping the MAC address from the dongle to the phone, but I have the radio settings of both the dongles. What I don't have is a way to put these settings into the phone.
Moreover, I was unable to root the phone with the above mentioned methods, a little help there is also appreciated. :)

Best Regards
SS

I wasn't meaning you for say, I mean you got a guide here to root the kingdom. Yet I still was getting asked about rooting is what I really mean. When it is on the first page and the title is pretty clear there isn't much searching needed if you understand what I am getting at. I agree some info is hard to find though which is understandable.

As for the soft key issue or phones being different how you said. I would really like to know who said it as I only recall me saying something about it on my site. Where it was to do with the soft keys not working, how ever I didn't say that but along the lines of there being two touchscreens. If you read it by someone else or something it needs pointed out that it is wrong. As if it were true I would have more issues doing all the 3 different carrier phones.

Then I had someone go to the higher up guys about my posts of ignoring pms. Which I will explain a bit better here. Where I recall mentioning make a all in one thread. I meant make like a root issue thread or even the questions about dev work. That way the new people here could learn or possibly find a fix for there issue. Then us dev's or people could reply to the said post. Instead I get several pm's about it instead. Where if I help one person via pm, the info is kept private. I then get asked again by someone else and just keeps repeating. If the info was plubic it would cut down on a lot of the same pm's I receive.

How ever you have the root thread that really isn't getting much attention. Not sure why though, how ever this may help you/others out: Kingdom Utility_V1.2 (9/8/12)) This is part of the tool I said I had together, how ever being noob friendly I re-based it on the kingdom as a lot of options wouldn't have applied to it. So there would have been numerous posts saying something didn't work. Everything in the above should work besides the download part for recovery as it isn't on the server I don't believe. Though you can place a recovery.img into the folder.
2Fast- I was the one having the problems with the softkeys lighting up randomly or not at all. I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced the same problem. I am extremely happy you to took the time to post this guide, as I was lost on the process for rooting the EVO Design (came from a rooted Incredible 2).

Anyhow, everything is great and seems to work fine, except for the softkeys lighting (which isnt't a big deal to me anyway. :)) So thank you again!

Oh, one other thing I noticed. The wifi-hotspot doesn't work either. Is there a fix for this, or should I just try a wipe and re-flash?

Chapter Two: Root Only

IMPORTANT NOTE:The root only method is for the Boost Mobile device ONLY!!! For any other carriers, skip this chapter and continue at the top of the next post. That would be chapter three, ClockWorkMod.

IMPORTANT NOTE:If you plan on installing a custom ROM, you do not need to use the Root Only portion of this guide. Skip directly to the next chapter, ClockWorkMod.

Here is a very simple root only method from Apache Thunder. You will need to put a file on the root of your SD card. Placing a file on the root of you SD card simply means not to put it inside any folders. Whether you remove your SD card or use USB doesn't matter. The file can be found at this link https://www.dropbox.com/s/ia0yno9ws6b7pdz/PH44IMG.zip then make sure it is on your SD card.

With the file on you SD card, replace the card in your phone if you removed it. Remove your battery, and with the SD card in your phone, place the battery back in the phone, do not turn it on. If you recall from unlocking your bootloader, to get to your bootloader you must hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time after placing the battery back in the phone. Do this now. Your phone should automatically go into hboot mode. If it does not say HBOOT in blue and white directly below the green text, choose the hboot option using the volume buttons and power button to select. Wait for the phone to check the SD card, some bright green text will show up. Give it a few more minutes, and if all goes well, you should be asked Do you want to start update? If you are sure you want to continue with this process, push volume up. If you are having second thoughts, then push volume down. If you continue with the process, do not remove the battery during the process.

I will post the different errors and their solutions here.

Hello, I have an HTC EVO Design 4g with Boost Mobile.
Android Version: 4.0.3
HTC Sense version: 3.6
Software Number: 1.11.653.0 71RD
Kernel Verison: 3.0.16

And I downloaded the PP44IMG file, and put it in in my SD and fastbooted my phone, (and yes I unlocked it successfully with HTCdev) and it read the SD and didn't pop up any messages or errors, nor did it ask to update.
I know that it is a noob question, and I have read this fourm for top to bottom and backwards. And someone brought up my question but it never got answered. But do I need to un-zip the files or extract them out of the compressed file? When I tried to do that my windows popped up with an error saying that the "PP44IMG.zip" file was empty and I needed to copy files to it before I can extract them. Also, when I put the file in my MicroSD card and tried to extract the files it told me that I need to " Insert last disk of the volume to extract".

So I am new to android phones, I was an Apple user before. Someone please help a noob out, lol. And thanks in advance.

You don't need to extract at all. Still though, not sure why you're getting those errors. But I'm not the developer of any of these, so maybe that's supposed to happen. It could be that you'd need to use 7zip for some specific reason.
But what I didn't see in your post is if you entered hboot from the fastboot menu. Let me know if you've tried that?

Chapter Three: ClockWorkMod

Part One: What is ClockWorkMod? Why do I want it?

You've rooted your phone! VICTORY! Guess what, if you want to do anything else now, it will seem like a walk in the park compared to what you just did. And if you're still reading this, I guess you REALLY want to take a walk in a park, eh? ;)

So this chapter is about ClockWorkMod, or CWM. This is what's called a custom recovery. It allows you to clear information caches and logs from your system, fix permissions, format memory systems and directories, partition memeory devices, and most importantly to you, flash ROMs and kernels. But what does it mean to flash ROMs and kernels? What the #3!! are ROMs and kernels?

Well, a kernel is the middle man between the ROM and the device. The kernel is how your ROM communicates to your device, but it also dictates how much power each component of your device should have, and when. The main reason people use custom kernels is to overclock their processors. That just means that they are able to tell their processor to run at a higher speed that the factory told it to, and thus it will complete processing tasks that much faster. But it can also tell your device to do its regular tasks while using less power. That means that you can make your battery last longer, some a lot of people would be intersted in. Even if you're not interested in using a custom kernel, I would recommend it.

A ROM is your operating system (or an OS). Android uses a Linux based OS. A lot of developers prefer Linux over Windows or Apple. The reason Linux was first used for Android, was because it already had an efficient language to begin Android with, and it is something called open source (essentially meaning that nobody can own rights to it). Android being open source means that legally, we can edit Android and distribute it as long as it remains free. Having a different ROM, or OS, is not as different as different as Apple and Windows. It still has to be an Android device. But it means you can add different features, customize different aspects and looks, run your device more efficiently, and customize it more to fit your lifestyle.

But in order to do all of that, you need to start with ClockWorkMod.

Part Two: Installing ClockWorkMod

If you recall the last steps of unlocking your bootloader, you placed a file in a folder on your computer, ran your phone in its bootloader, and through your computer, installed or executed that file. Well this is going to very similar. Fist, start with step zero, which is backing up your phone. If you rooted your phone just before this, don't worry about it. But if you've used your phone after rooting and have something you don't want to lose, make sure to back it up.

We will begin by once again downloading a file. Travel to this site Design(Boost)-5.0.2.8(Bigger Text) - Downloads - 2FastRoms and dowload the zipped folder of CWM for the Boost EVO Design 4G. Once downloaded, unzip the folder, and copy the file called recovery.img. You will paste this file in the same folder you used to root your phone. You are now ready to begin the process of installing a custom recovery on your phone. Once again, make sure you have removed the PH44IMG folder from your SD card, or you will get very annoyed here.

Boot your phone into its bootloader. Again, to do that, remove the battery, insert back in, and hold the volume down and power buttons until you see three little androids at the bottom of the screen. If you do not see fastboot in white and blue letters beneath the green text, navigate to the fastboot option with the volume buttons and power button to select. Connect your phone to your computer via USB. In the folder where you unlocked your bootloader and have now placed the recovery.img file, hold shift while right clicking and in the menu that pops up, select Open command window here. With the command window open, you will need to type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and press enter. This should only take a second or two, and it will be finished. Reboot your phone, you now have ClockWorkMod!

If you wish to enter ClockWorkMod at this time, to do so, you need to enter your bootloader again. In the hboot menu, you should see an option called recovery. Select that to enter ClockWorkMod. In CWM, you navigate much the same way.

Thanks and credit go to 2Fast4U88 for his work getting ClockWorkMod on our device.

OK when I type the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img the commnad says waiting for device and never does anything. Am I doing something wrong? I did do the root only method, but I now want to do all custom. Does this make a difference?

Ok I got Step 4 down pat but when it comes to Step 5 I can't get AdbWinApi.dll although I see adb.exe and fastboot.exe ... The AdbWinApi.dll has no icon beside it although it's there what should I do?

You don't need to extract at all. Still though, not sure why you're getting those errors. But I'm not the developer of any of these, so maybe that's supposed to happen. It could be that you'd need to use 7zip for some specific reason.
But what I didn't see in your post is if you entered hboot from the fastboot menu. Let me know if you've tried that?

Thanks so much for responding so quickly, it turns out that my home internet connection for some reason wasn't downloading the whole file, so it was actually empty. I went to my college campus and downloaded the file there and everything work flawlessly. Your thread has been like a holy text to me since I got my Evo Design. And I am a noob, like I said before, to the Android phones and devices.

After I got the correct file to download it to me minutes to root my phone. Thanks so much.:D:D
