Root HTC EVO Design 4G - All Carriers - Root guide

I'm leaving my Prevail (CTMod) just ordered a new Evo for Boost. Planning on rooting first thing.
I was looking at 2fast's utility tool.. anyone have any experiences with it?

Or is this the best method to root?

Advice for a Evo Noob?
i have never had problems with this guide i have rooted two evo designs, as long as you read the instructions everything will go a okay :).

After searching the forums for days and days trying to figure out how to root my stock ROM I figured that I would just use the tutorial all the way through finish installing clock work mod then use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

is that SU needed for boost? I was under the impression that it was for sprint.

I was going to follow the directions to use 2fasts cwm. that would give root right? with the latest OTA? then with CWM i can install the rom as usual?
Also, any experience with ROM Toolbox?

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you guys. I just wanted to let you know that updating the pro did help with my phone call issue. Also I was reading about the su thing. If I recall correctly' , doesn't such and Bob get installed when you root the phone with the files and directions from the root guide?..But I do think that on 2fast website there is a zip for sure and cwm to for that matter. I also was able to find a stock rom and a root zip that you can flash rite after to gain root. Its in these forums somewhere. Jeez, wish I could keep track of this stuff.. lol. But I do have the files if you can't find them. They worked perfectly for my boost phone. Right after using these I went to the Aosense rom . Its ics with no sense and works perfect. Very fast and all stock Ics.. As long as you have a boost phone there is no issues. I sure wish that dev was still around. The only thing I missed was the HTC KB. But was able to get it modded and all is well...now for the camera?...lol

Just to make sure I'm getting this right..

Unlock
Install CWM

Then I can install a stock rooted recovery image or rom or even back to stock if needed?

I'd appreciate and helpful links or insight.

I guess that's a simple way of saying it. But yes mostly. The thing is if you follow the guide step by step..all should be well. Yes you can go back to stock after you get cwm installed. You can have stock root or no root. But be aware as far as I know from what I have read. The phone can not be relocked. Or I have also read where they say you can. But it will show in h boot that it was relocked. So, let's say you wanted to return your phone or had to send it in. I'm not sure how the carrier would handle that.? Hence the warning..you have voided your warranty. But I have rooted two of these phones with no problems.:)

Anyone have a link to this file?

Here is a very simple root only method from Apache Thunder. You will need to put a file on the root of your SD card. Placing a file on the root of you SD card simply means not to put it inside any folders. Whether you remove your SD card or use USB doesn't matter. The file can be found at this link https://www.dropbox.com/s/ia0yno9ws6b7pdz/PH44IMG.zip then make sure it is on your SD card.

Everything was going great till i reached the section with the SDK manager. Android SDK Tools, and Android SDK Platform- tools both show as Installed. Yet I'm having trouble moving on. Please Help!

Make sure you've copied the correct files and put them somewhere simple (C:\Android) that way it's easier to navigate to in the command prompt.

I followed the guide exactly and didn't have a single problem.

But now, my phone barely connects to the mobile network. I mostly have one bar or no connection in places where I used to have full bars. Any idea what would cause this and how I can fix it? Everything else seems to be working fine.

Try this:

Settings>System updates>Update PRL

Thanks, but I tried that and it didn't improve my signal. I also tried "Update profile" and saw no difference.

I should also add that when I do have a signal now, I'm usually roaming. Previously my phone would very rarely be roaming.

Edit: I don't know exactly how, but my problem seems to have corrected itself. I cleared the dalvik cache a couple more times since the guide says you may want to do that multiple times, and I just messed with some other settings. Not sure what caused it, but it's working.

Chapter Three: ClockWorkMod
........

So I am having big problems trying to get into CWM. First I will start with my phone specs.

Sprint EVO Design 4G
Android Version 2.3.5
Baseband version 2.15.00.12.19
Kernel version 2.6.35.10-g94d0005

What I have accomplished already. I have already backed up my phone. I have unlocked my phone and when I get into bootloader is says "UNLOCKED" at the top. I downloaded CWM and followed the steps, unzipped and got the recovery.img file etc. I went into bootloader and I didn't get blue and white letters with fastboot I got red and white letters when I selected fastboot. I still went ahead and tried and connected my USB opened up the command window (shift and right click in the folder didn't work but i created the proper directory in the command window) I typed in the applicable command and it sent the recovery.img file 4476 KB okay and writting recovery okay.....finished total time 3.120s.

Kickin' ass so far! Now I have the "recovery" option. Great I already have a custom ROM and Kernel on my SD card that I want to install. So I choose recovery and it imediately restarts the phone and stays on the bootloading screen (completely white with SPRINT 4G logo) and nothing happens I waited 30 minutes and then had to pull the battery out. It restarts normally but I cant get into CWM.

I went and tried 2fast's utility tool and it says I already have the most current CWM version and I run into the same problems.

Please someone help me. I am so close!

Steeveen, If you still need the img file I uploaded it to my drop box account. Let me know..also sorry I have not been following this thread for awhile. But, did you get as far as cwm? If so there is the cwm stock backup and root zip . I can up those. I believe the link is here. Just short on time at work right now. Let me know if you want..

I am trying to put CWM on my phone, but I'm getting < waiting for device > on the cmd prompt. (I couldn't figure out how to open recovery in the cmd prompt with a right click either)

Is my phone not being recognized by my computer?
