HTC Gingerbread update.

Forgot to say my update went fine yesterday (Orange un-branded). Screen sharper, new text features to help spell check, I liked and Facebook seems to work smoothly at last !

Hopefully this will be of some use to you mate: I got the update today and after about half an hour of screwing around everything seems much smoother. Update automatically turned off USB Debugging Mode but there's no apparent lag, so I guess that issue has been fixed. They've made a few nice changes, now the app screen scrolls a page at a time and there is now a "Quick Settings" tab on the notifications window which lets you toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Hotspot, GPS and Mobile Network. Aside from that and a few new menu options, there's not much else to see, but I should imagine there's a lot of stuff going on in the software that you're not necessarily aware of.

HOWEVER: I did see a few posts in the forum from people who have had problems with the update. One said that Wi-Fi wasn't working any more, another said that their phone had been eating the battery since the update. I'm guessing these are rarities (though I did think twice before updating), you should be fine, but be aware there is a minor risk there. It sounds like you have just got your phone though, so if you update and it does something funny, I guess you could always try a factory reset and go back to 2.2 without losing too much stuff.

That's just my thoughts on the matter after a few minutes observation, perhaps someone else would like to weigh in?

Is it still sense 2.1? Or is up updated?
Cheers, Bentree.

I'm on Telus in Canada and the update hasn't been released yet, at least my phone says it hasn't when I check for the update.

I'm really in debate about it, if this many people are having issues with random things during/after the update, is it really worth the risk? I was told my battery life would improve, but if other things start to degrade... what's the point?

Rather than give advice that could potentially brick the handset, I'd say call HTC.

I see one fatal flaw in your plan sir! :D

Yerp, still 2.1.

To be fair, you're likely to hear of more people with issues than without, as is the nature of complaining and problem-solving. Nobody's going to come looking for advice because the install went smoothly.

for those wondering if they should upgrade to 2.36.405.08 ....mine went smoothly. Only played with it for 5-10 mins, but so far, so good!

Personal observations:
Reboots itself a few times during update.
Had to redo wallpaper / skin.

Faster / smoother swiping
Quick settings via notification bar

Anyone else had YouTube sign in error after update? How do I fix it? I've tried switching it off and on again, unlinking and linking again to my Google account. It works fine from internet browser. I can log in and everything. I can watch vids but I can post comments. What should I do. Pls help.

im on the 3 network and still no update for me? and i try at least 20 times a day :)

why cant 3 just announce when it will be ready:mad:

apart from there appalling network cover in parts of London YES LONDON the other reason I left three was they were so slow at getting updates to there handsets

In all fairness I always found 3's cover to be as good as any other network, if not better. I was with them for 5 or 6 years and only left because I wanted a DHD and Orange would give me one for

What's the software number? If it's 1.72.405.3 or 1.32.405.3, it's not updated. Was it def the Android 2.3.3 update?

Has anyone got a final verdict then on if its worth upgrading?

From what ive been reading since release, Gingerbread has its good points (faster/smoother operation, better battery, various improvements) but then also has a few bad points (the wifi issue, and the weather widget not storing data particularly come to mind).

Now, my big issue with holding off on updating is the fact I use wifi on my DHD quite a lot, particularly in hotels when im away from home, where often I can only get a weak signal..so I dont want to update, then find im having to use not only the slower EDGE or GPRS connection, but will also eat my data levels unless I turn off all the syncing.
For some reason, my contract sim has NEVER picked up a 3G signal on any phone ever, yet my payg sim on the same network, sitting next to it, has 3G 8 out of 10 times.. :(

So is it worth the possible hassle, or should I just wait and hope for a wifi fix?

hi its 1.32.405.6 , odd as the downloads was ok, and it says it installed ok etc.

Strange, is it a relatively new handset? I know when I first got mine, I was given the option to install s/w updates; it could be one of those? What happens when you check for updates again?

I'd say it's worth updating, I've noticed very minor issues, but nothing that's a real deal breaker. One of those is also related to a 3rd Party app. I'm not sure about the WiFi thing, my wifi signal at work is rubbish and it doesn't really effect me.

I know some folk have had issues, but I think for the most part, the majoity have had a relatively painless experience.

I'd say go for it, but I'd wait to hear from folk who've had issues to comment. If it does mess things up for you, there is always the option to downgrade (although you'd void your warranty).

*sigh* still waiting on the update to filter down to these unbranded Asian phones, HTC dropping the ball :-/

Ive just updated mine, i like the new style of it but it is disconnecting from the wifi every so often roughly every ten minutes its doing it so im annoyed at that!

Did you guys backup your phones before doing this?

I know with Froyo they said you did not need to but im not sure with this one. Should i risk it? The important thing like contacts are linked to gmail so thats ok.

Worked fine for me. I just made sure I had a backup if I needed it but didn't ....

Not to make a stupid suggestion, but have you tried resetting the router? From time to time they decide to stop working.

That's not a stupid suggestion and something i intend to do tonight. I went to the three shop and they connected the phone a 3 Mifi hotspot and it worked. I then walked around town looking for free wifi and was able to connect to websites like thecloud and btopenzone which whilst not quite surfing, could still be classed as transferring data between the router and the handset....[/QUOTE]

Just to update.

I updated the router firmware but that didn't work. I contacted HTC who recommended that i use the Static IP settings and my broadband company provided the IP, Gateway, Netmask and DNS details and bob's your uncle, it connected!!!

Thank christ for that but very odd how i could connect to various other WIFI sources after the update but not my own!
