HTC Gingerbread update.

I'm new to the whole smartphone thing, just bought my DHD a week ago and I'm running the stock system, which I think is Froyo (The 2.2 one..), that came with the phone, what's the benefit of updating to the new version? I don't want to do it myself, and Telus will do it for me for free, I just don't really know if it's worth it? Are there advantages and disadvantages of the update?

Hopefully this will be of some use to you mate: I got the update today and after about half an hour of screwing around everything seems much smoother. Update automatically turned off USB Debugging Mode but there's no apparent lag, so I guess that issue has been fixed. They've made a few nice changes, now the app screen scrolls a page at a time and there is now a "Quick Settings" tab on the notifications window which lets you toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Hotspot, GPS and Mobile Network. Aside from that and a few new menu options, there's not much else to see, but I should imagine there's a lot of stuff going on in the software that you're not necessarily aware of.

HOWEVER: I did see a few posts in the forum from people who have had problems with the update. One said that Wi-Fi wasn't working any more, another said that their phone had been eating the battery since the update. I'm guessing these are rarities (though I did think twice before updating), you should be fine, but be aware there is a minor risk there. It sounds like you have just got your phone though, so if you update and it does something funny, I guess you could always try a factory reset and go back to 2.2 without losing too much stuff.

That's just my thoughts on the matter after a few minutes observation, perhaps someone else would like to weigh in?

A factory reset won't put you back on 2.2. It just gives you a fresh install of 2.3.

I think I'm going to hold off updating until this is fixed, I'm not risking losing WiFi because they're rushing updates out.

I have just read on the WiFi forum that HTC told someone that called them that he believes the gingerbread update has been withdraw because of the amount of people having WiFi issues and will not be resumed until they find a fix.

Definitely hasn't been withdrawn as I got mine yesterday evening - UK unbranded on O2. I haven't updated yet as I had SOOOOOOmany problems with the update they eventually pulled around Xmas that I'm holding fire. Don't want to have to do another factory reset (that didn't solve anything). Happy with phone as it is.

Anyone know how I can get the update icon to go away until I'm ready - fed up with seeing it all the time. If I touch it, does the update start immediately or do you have another screen or command to go through - anyone?? Don't want to hit it by mistake.

Anyone know how I can back up all my stuff for when I do decide to go for it? (My hTC Sense hasn't worked since the last update and it was perfect before it).

Just to say I am on 3 UK. I did my upgrade last night( 108MB of data, use your wifi pls ) !!
Absolutely no problems, sooooooo much smother and dare I say slightly quicker. As reported above, you get the quick settings tab now.

Cheers

Quick update.... Although connecting to my router at home seems to be an issue, i was able to connect and use a friends Desire as a wireless hotspot! It seems a strange turn of events seeing as nothing has changed with my router at home...

Oh. I'd just assumed that it would reset the device to, you know, the way it came out of the factory. Not to argue with you of course, that just seems like a pretty dumb move on HTC's part.

Not to make a stupid suggestion, but have you tried resetting the router? From time to time they decide to stop working.

That would be a handy option to have, but it would also mean devoting however many MB of storage to the backed up firmware, which is why I guess they choose not to.

I think it's called a factory reset more out of tradition than accuracy, really.

Yeah, I guess. At the very least it would be nice of them to provide back-issued updates for times when things go south.

They certainly don't make it very convenient to switch back, especially now that they've stopped putting firmware installers (RUUs) on their website and are shifting to OTA updates. I think all they do is offer to take the phone off you and downgrade it that way, but I'm sure that takes them ages.

But those firmware installers do make their way to the internet anyway, so we have you covered should downgrading be necessary.

Hello evryone. This is my first post. I emailed Virgin Mobile asking when they will be sending out the update. I received a reply by text advising they don't send the update and that my phone will automatically receive it. Forgive me for asking but from readin this thread don't Virgin Mobile need to authorise it and release it to me?

Hey guys, currently in the process of updating mine now. Just worried as its now just sitting at the 'HTC quietly brilliant' splash screen for ages. I know updates take a while but how long should I expect it to stay like this

Took about 15 minutes (including download time) for mine to update. Shouldn't be long. In fact I'd be surprised if it hadn't finished by the time I finish this sentence and hit the submit button.

Yeah. According to HTC, what apparently happens is they'll release it to the networks to add their own apps etc. They'll then send it back to HTC who'll release to network branded users.

I have just spoke to a guy at Orange (UK) after he gave me a courtesy call about my new contract...I asked him about the Gingerbread update and said all his systems were still showing everything running on 2.2...he did say he would email be though if he can find anything else out :)

That's not a stupid suggestion and something i intend to do tonight. I went to the three shop and they connected the phone a 3 Mifi hotspot and it worked. I then walked around town looking for free wifi and was able to connect to websites like thecloud and btopenzone which whilst not quite surfing, could still be classed as transferring data between the router and the handset....

Right I have decided its broken. My phone has now been on the splash screen for 2 hours now. I dont know what next to do as it clearly isnt going anywhere soon. any kind of help please? :(

Happens from time to time. Mine stopped working last week, the best test is to try and connect another device to the same router, in my case my PC. Unplug it for about 10 seconds (gives the caps time to discharge) and then plug it back in.

Hi All,

I like most updated my Desire HD to gingerbread on the 16th May here in the UK.

I have an unbranded phone on t-mobile.

Since updating i've noticed the stock internet app no longer carries over my htc sense skin (i have the slate skin running but the internet app displays the stock htc skin)

Also my Weather and clock/weather widget doesn't retain information from the last time I updated it. Basically I need to update to see any weather info, not just current conditions.

Just curious if anyone else has noticed these issues?

Slight niggles i know, but annoying all the same.

Cheers
