HTC Hero: Tips, Tricks & Useful Apps [v1.6]

The only problem I have with the stock email program is that it doesn't update when I've read a message on my computer. so i have to open all emails twice. is there any way to avoid this?

Try IMAP instead of POP3, does exactly what you ask for.

I saved the zip file to my sd card.. when i open it, it asks where i want to unzip it to.. but it doesnt install anything (i`m using Astro file manager)

It will unzip the folder and release a file with the .apk extension. This file ending with .apk is what you must click on to install.

The zip file is more like a package/box, open it to get to the item :p

Well I can safely say there is no .apk file in there. Looks like i`m stuffed on this one. :(

Thanks for your help guys... but i`ve sorted it. I tried changing the file name to end in .apk and downloaded an app installer and it worked.

Wow this Tasker is hard to work out. Not sure if I like it. :(

Coming from the Pre as of only a few days ago.... I have a few questions.

Can you copy and paste text?

Why are there no 3D games on Android (Ifound this to be the most shocking, the Pre has 3D games and Android doesn't... weird) Is it just because I have a HERO on 1.5 or does it have something to do with SD cards not being secure?

coming from Web Os, what should I understand about Android first?

What am I missing?

long press on text to copy and paste, or in some places press menu then select 'select'.

There are 3d games, check out the games section of the site.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying what Android 1.5 has to offer and with my Hero, would I love to see the buttons moved a bit. I usually leave my phone in a side pocket, reaching for it I've hung up on quite a few people... It's gotten a bit annoying.

As for the 3D games... I don't see anything like what the iphone or the Pre has.... nothing from Gameloft at least or is there (could you provide a link to the game section of this site?) Again, still a noob with Android. I would also say I wish the Android market place a.) had a desktop version you could sync to and b.) had an image to go with the description of the app your about to download...

Speaking of which, any good apps for students? Help keep my assignments in order by due date and such?

Check out appbrain.com, lots of games and all kind of applications, with screendumps and short descriptions. You can tell it to install from your webbrowser, than start the accompanying appbrain application on your phone and install there. Lots of fun to be had!

wondering why the received emails on HTC Hero are all deleted after few days,
how do i save them on phone, any ideas??
Better late than never .....

Go into the inbox. Then menu>more>settings>send & recieve>download options. There you can set Options to just show today's, last 3 days etc. The last one "all" allows you to keep all emails on the phone

But beware - doing that over a long period does mean you end up with a lot of emails and it has been reported that that slows down the phone after a while.

  • A standard miniUSB cable will fit the Hero. Handy if the supplied "proprietary" one gets damaged or you need a second cable (as I do; one at work and one at home).

  • Long-pressing the home button will bring up a list of recently used apps.

Hope this is of use,

Miles.
