Help HTC Incredible Boot Loop - trying to help friend

It doesn't appear I had a reboot loop last night. My battery was below 50 percent when I went to bed so I had to plug it in and, therefore, that might have impacted my ability to identify the reboot loop based just on massive battery usage. I'll try to leave it unplugged tonight so I can be sure, but I use GO Locker and the default lock is activated upon a reboot; this morning that was not the case, so I'm fairly certain it did not reboot.

I did run the app suggested by iowabowtech and ended up with a huge log file. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?

Not unless it reboots at 2am, then we want to investigate to see what was happening at that time and hopefully pinpoint the cause. If the log file is real big, delete it if you want and start over again tonight. Eventually, you'll have it running and we'll catch it in the act. No need to fill up your sd card here so it'll take a little management on your end. Also make sure the log app isn't running all day, only have it going at night when the problem is occuring.

I came across this on a google search, and I am relieved to know it isn't just me, but exasperated! My job requires me to be on-call sometimes, and it can literally be a life-or-death scenario...and I'm on night shift. 2 a.m. is prime calling time some nights! I've had 2 am reboot loops every night since the 22nd, and I also installed the newest update. They seem to stop around 5 am EST. Airplane mode isn't stopping it either (just so I can get a dang charge on the thing). I guess I will be calling Verizon tomorrow. They need to fix this asap! I'm sure I'm not the only one who has to be available at 2 am. Plus, what a shoddy piece of software...really. After 1 year, this "Incredible" has really been anything but.

Glad (in a sick and twisted way) I'm not alone in this!

Sorry to hear you're having the issue as well, Misse. Since you have to be available around that time, have you ever been able to just let the process work itself out without pulling the battery? I did that two or three nights in a row and that seems to have done the trick.

Yesterday was another trouble-free day with the phone. I don't believe it rebooted last night. I got it charged to around 90 percent before bed and it was around 70 percent in the morning, but I think that usage was probably due to running the log app.

One other thing I did that I haven't mentioned and I don't know if it might have helped the situation, on Tuesday I installed Easy Cache Clean ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bazinga.cacheclean ) and Super Tool Box ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.lepeng.superboxss&hl=en ) and have been using those to manage my phone much more carefully. I'm doubtful that those sorts of things would help this situation, but hey, I figured I'd mention it since my phone seems to be working now.

Another thing I'll mention that may not be related at all, I've have a lot of problems with HTC Sense crashing on me. It wasn't a phone killer because it only crashed upon closing an app, which is mainly just an annoyance, but before the reboot loop started last week, that was the biggest issue I was working through. I thought Sense might be having something to do with the reboot loop, so I started using Go Launcher over the weekend. Don't get me wrong, I still had the reboot loop problems for several more days, but now I'm still using Go Launcher an the phone is working very well. At the first least, I don't have the Sense problems anymore.

Just some thoughts and observations. Please report back on your progress in solving this issue. And, NewPepper, if you're listening, I'm sure we'd all like to hear how you are progressing as well.

My phone was also doing the 2AM restart. I went to the verizon dealer and they said the only thing they could do was a factory reset of the device.

Before I resorted to that I decided that I would allow the phone to restart for a few hours because I have read about an update that is being pushed down from the network. So I woke up this morning (~6:30am) and my phone was really hot and only booting to the first white HTC screen before restarting again. So, I took out the battery and let the phone cool down. Now...the phone does not start up past the white HTC screen. I am able to get to the hard reset screen (by holding volume down and the power button), but it will not boot beyond that point. So, I am currently debating doing the factory reset myself or waiting until verizon opens to see what they suggest I do.

If I can ever get the phone to boot up, I will probably put cyanogenmod on there and hope that their software is better than the HTC stock stuff.

Are you already rooted? If so how did you root and is your bootloader s-on or s-off?

This is BS and simply untrue. Do you really think that the Verizon rep contacted HTC? Updates do not cause your phone to continuously reboot for 3 hours. Never has; never will. Updates take about 15 minutes and you're done. They are not followed by mysterious 2AM repetitive reboots, night after night.

I was woken 2 nights in a row with my phone cycling. the service rep contacted HTC. They are pushing a large software push which takes up to 3 hours. They have it scheduled to occur starting at 0200 hours in the morning to 0500 AM. I kept interrupting the cycle because it was waking me. Verizon says the cycling is part of the software upgrade and that I should turn the sound off and let it completely finish this time. It seems logical based upon my issues since Friday. Thaought others need to know about this. I asked Verizon why they did not send all of us a text link to a website explaining the process so we did not interrupt the update, they stated that would probably have been a good thing and did not understand why they did not do it.

OK, then tell those of us affected AFTER the update who are rudely awakened at exactly 2:00 am what the cause is???????????????????? This is really jacked up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2:00 am !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JACKED UP I SAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

been away for a few days and I've been putting the phone in airplane mode at night. It doesn't do the reboot loop when in airplane mode with no wi-fi. I'm back home now and will have it on wi-fi tonight to see if it goes into the loop. If I can stay awake that long, I'll set the log to start right before 2am. Will let you know what happens tomorrow.

Pb_shutr,

You misunderstood me. I'm saying that this is a BUG in the update. Not HTC trying to push more updates or the phone doing post-update configuration. That's simply a fairytale. It's just a bug - a bad update. If you're not rooted, there is not much you can do. If you get rooted, you can simply flash the older version 4.08.605.2 back onto your phone like I did. Well, I actually just restored my Nandroid backup (an image of the phone). These features are only available if you're rooted.

10-4 sorry!

Nuts, don't really want to root my Incredible, but the reboot loop is driving me nuts. Has anyone heard anything from Verizon or HTC about a fix?

Last night it does not appear that it did the reboot loop. Battery consumption was less than 10% over night, primarily WiFi and Cell Standby with a small blip of Awake time.

Like Fryskysman, my phone seems to be fine now. I'm still on Sense. Considering the number of nights plus the number of times I "tricked" the phone by manually setting the date/time I'd say it takes about 4 to 6 days to correct itself if you let the reboots run on their own. I have no idea why, but in total i'd say i experienced this 4 to 6 times and now it's been fine the last few days.

Fryskysman, anything new on your situation?

So, first time was the night of 6-29, done it every night since. Called Verizon today and they have over 400 calls about this. They said it has to do with a memory optimization update that does take 3 hours to complete and it will continue to reboot until it can do the update. But, they said a factory update will stop it. Nope, did it every day without success. Ugh, it's been 5 nights now. I spoke w/ an HTC tech rep, Kevin, who said that this is a mandatory system update and it will continue every night until it goes through. The endless boot loop is actually part of the process, but until it does it successfully, it will redo it every night.
The only advice they gave me was patience. Very frustrating, as this is the first issue I've had with this phone and I've had the phone since 7-23-10.

What sort of memory optimization routine can a phone do that can take 3 hours or more? Makes me worried WTF they're doing. Surely its my choice to 'optimize' my phones performance, not theirs.

How do you make the phone be quiet while it's doing this? I turn off all sound before going to bed and it still blasts out "Droid."

Interesting - I have found that the opposite be true. My first Incredible had a really annoying habit of getting all hot and flustered and rebooting multiple times during the day (more so during a meeting) and the only way to save face (kinda hard extolling the virtues of an Android to an iPhone user then hear it scream out 'Droid!' and casually explain that 'Yeah, it's just rebooting again') was to turn the volume off. I missed a few calls but was not as embarrassed as much either...

I've heard of apps that can apparently silence the reboot sound but I'm thinking you need to be rooted first.

But yeah, that 'Droid!', whilst fun when FroYo first came out, can be quite jarring. I think I may replace the MP3 file with a small whispering '(sorry!)'.

I've got the Silent Boot app, and it works when you shut the phone off and then reboot, but it doesn't help when the phone reboots itself.

It's pretty annoying that they don't have an option to turn that stupid sound off. Every time I go to a funeral (I'm getting older and going to a lot of those lately), I don't power the phone off, just silence it, but afterwards am relieved that it didn't reboot itself and blast out DROID!!!!! I'd just have to pretend it wasn't me.

2AM - It just started rebooting, and for the first time it's silent, thank goodness. I turned off all the sounds again and this time it took. I just can't figure out how booting over and over and over again every 10 seconds is accomplishing anything, but I guess I'll let it go all night this time.

I am flying 6000 miles in the morning on a business trip and this GD thing starts this BS at 2am. WTF?????? I am so GD pissed right now and don't have time for this! I've never had an update from Verizon that didn't have some BS tied to it somewhere! Why can't they just test their shet before they deploy it????? Unreal!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Another sleepless night here, thanks to my Droid Incredible. Thank you all for this thread...I was beginning to think I was going crazy! I, too, have been pulling the battery just to shut the thing off. When I turn sound off, it doesn't wake me until it's rebooted a few times then the blasted "DROOOOOIIIIDDDDD" kicks in again.

When I go to "System Updates", it says my system IS up to date - so why is it still in reboot loop??

I also need to be available 24/7 via phone, and this is getting ridiculous!

It took two nights and a total of about 6 hours for my phone to finish whatever the reboot cycle was trying to do.

During the day, while I was at work, I advanced my phone to the next day and set the time to 2 am, muted the phone, and let the reboot cycle do its thing. I did leave WiFi on, but I don't think that's necessary (as my phone started the reboot cycle when WiFi and internet were off). I also turned on Background data (in the Accounts and Sync menu) which I used to tell when the reboot cycle stopped: with Background and WiFi on, the phone will tell me if I have App updates available. I'd clear that notification as soon as I'd see it; each time the phone rebooted, that update notification would reappear.

The first cycle lasted about 3 hrs, and the reboot cycle stopped. I then corrected the phone time/date to the present, and was not woken up in the wee hours of the morning. The following day, I advanced the date and time, muted the phone, and let the reboot cycle happen. It lasted about two hours. Immediately after that cycle finished, I advanced the phone date/time one more day (so the phone would think it was 24 hrs later) and the reboot cycle did not happen.

Thank you all for this thread!

I wrote to HTC, and here is their reply (it took about two days to arrive):

The early morning reboot is the second part of the update. It should happen from 2am-5am. It is a memory optimization update being performed after the first part of the update. This should only happen once, although if you interrupt it through the night it will start over again the next night until it completes successfully. Once finished it will not happen again.

If you have any other questions, ssgiris, please feel free to reply back and I will be more than happy to help. Don't forget you can view our product support page online at www.htc.com/us/support/etc-droid-incredible-verizon/

Thank you for choosing HTC and have a great night.

All,

Thank you very much for your posts. This was driving me nuts. I have done the above procedure (setting to 2am and leave it). I checked back 6 hours later. Then reset forward a week to 2am. The problems seems to have gone away. Ridiculous that verizon/HTC did not make people aware of this. I bet they've woken up countless numbers of people with the 2am "DROID!" reboot.

Coincidence that the HTC Incredible 4g just launched and people are getting a strange "memory optimization" on their incredible? Trying to scare/push people to upgrade? I was a little worried myself that I would need to get a new device...

Thanks again folks

Take care

Robb
