....it worked great!

I rooted using unrevoked (with some excellent walkthroughs on youtube to assist) and was surprised just how smoothly it all went.

Running Oxygen v2.0-RC7 (Vanilla 2.3) and I am loving it. It's like having a new phone again.

Thanks to Rastaman-FB for providing the words to motivate me:

its not too difficult, just a daunting task first time round due to fear and lack of understanding.
even as a rooting veteran on other devices i still lost a bucket of sweat and my backside nearly fell out when i first rooted this device.

My Desire HD has taken a back seat for a while as I get to grips with Gingerbread.

I guess that the point of this post is to say if an old cynic like me can do it - anyone can!

its tru that it invalidates it however some people have had good success with a friendly htc team if its a hardware error.
i would recommend everyone check for an RUU from their phone vendor before they root.

As for Widehead, well done mate. its a long process and a bit hairy at times but when you get there you feel relieved and you can now test lots of stuff out, dont fear asking in the root section for help. we talk alot and are happy to help.
make sure you make backups in recovery (voldown + power) before you make major changes

Ill let you know now, gingervillain has poor battery life for me (apparently its the case for 2.3 in general) im now charging every day rather than every other, it does last more than 24hrs but i dont want to risk it (usually at 35% at end of the day before i charge it)
