Root I need help!!

JessDUB

Newbie
Ok so I'm new. I just joined and I need help.
I tried to root my phone. I was successful I think.. according to a couple friends. And the Superuser permissions icon is there.. and I got ROM manager.. did the clockworkmod recovery thing..
SO.. I went to put a rom on my phone..
I hooked it up..
did the Disk Drive (Mount as disk drive) option..
Dragged the zipped file into the folder with all my phones programs in it..
did the power and volume down thing..
clicked the zip file option (forget the exact words)
clicked my zip file i wanted to install..
then it said aborted. Tried again, same thing.

I dont think my sd card is mounted? I'm not sure, someone asked me that..

I need help! My battery dies 4 times a day, and besides that I just want to learn how to make my phone better! :o

Please help!

Well there are acoulpe of things you can do to make your battery last longer. . I got 16 hr out my phone with mild use other day put thats after many steps.. before you try flashing a rom if its just battery you want to improve try just flashing a kernel. when you do this make sure you nandroid back up. And factory wipe delvic wipe and cache wipe. When you boot in to recovery Does it say s-on or s-off?

Make sure that you place the .zip file on the root of the sd card. That means not in any folder, just the top level of the card. Also make sure that you wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache before you flash a rom. MOST IMPORTANT IS TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP FIRST. Nandroid backups will be your friend.

Or download the rom directly to your phone, it will be in your downloads folder on your sd card.;)

yeah thats what caught my eye too...just put it on the root for now. I create a folder called roms and throw all my roms i want to flash in there but worry about that later. Just put it on the top level.

I agree you most definitely need to wipe /data /cache /dalvik cache but that wouldnt cause it to abort flashing i dont think,

Did it say why it aborted? No script errors? What version of clockwork recovery do you have?

Also dont try and flash a rom from rom manager or wipe or back up from it really just do it all manually, you are better off.

Yeah we should make sure that when you do the "volume down, power button thing" (hboot) the screen it goes to says s-off at the top.

And make a back up of your current set up before you do anything i dont know if you did these things but they werent mentioned, devil is in the details

BTW welcome to the android forums :) you will find everyone here is very helpful and always willing to answer any questions. You should probably check this out too The Rooting for Dummies Guide it has an After Rooting Section with instruction on flashing.

You need to make sure that is on the root of the SD also you may need to toggle signature verification. Also always do a Nandroid before flashing.

lol yeah thanks guys now I'm more confused then ever!!
I might have unzipped it? the folder has the zipper on it, but i think i clicked extract files.. So maybe Ill re-download it.

Would it be easier if i downloaded it from my phone like Andygu3 said?

it says s-off..

im doing it now as i type it..
i did recovery.
choose zip from sd card..
chose .zip rom i want

it says...

ClockworkMod recover v3.0.0.5

Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported.
Amend scripting depreciated by Google in android 1.5.
It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the ClockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages.
Installation aborted.

you will need to change your clockwork mod version. Do you have rom manager installed on your phone? If so, go there and try and flash the alternate recovery or select a different version(2.6.0.1) to flash. Otherwise, go here http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html and download either clockwork 2.6.0.1 or Amon RA 2.3 and follow the directions there to flash it. Then make a fresh backup and try and flash the rom again.

it says are you sure you want to flash an alternate recover? ROM manager features will be made unavailable until you flash back to clockworkmod recovery.

you will need either amon ra recovery or cw 2.6.0.1 to flash both types of script files. Flashing a diff version of cw other than that one will not help.

The recovery you have right now only works with one type of script. Most of the current roms are written in a type that is not supported by your current recovery. You need to change it to either clockwork 2.6.0.1 or Amon RA 2.3 as those support both types of script. Rom Manager will give you the option to flash an alternate recovery(Amon RA 2.3) or it will have an option to flash another version of clockwork. You will have to do one or the other to be able to flash roms at this time.

ok so here is the thing. clockwork mod 3+ supports a script called edify which google is now using ie gingerbread. the old script was amend. both clockwork mod 2.6 and amon ra 2.3 both read both amend and edify. so basically with clockwork mod 3+ you will be able to flash certain roms and other .zip files, but not all. that is why everlybody recommends either clockwork mod 2.6 or amon ra 2.3. i would recommend amon ra 2.3 because it does a really good job at wiping and flashing .zip files. rom manager uses clockwork mod. since rom manager is buggy (i had issues with it not flashing roms correctly), people have been gun shy about using clockwork mod.

if you want to switch recoveries use the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide, of course if you need help, please feel free to ask.

edit: oops xtremedays beat me to it. you can also use rom manager to switch recoveries. but like it has been said, doing things manually is a much better option.

Don't feel bad if your lost. it took me a little while to understand all the lingo but these guys are very nice and very willing to help. I have been bugging them ever since I only wanted better battery life. 2 months ago now my phone is great and runs really good. ------and i love my new rom----------- I was in the same boot with the version of clookwork mod your running. the easiest way I got around it they have already mentioned. However rom manager does not offer to switch you to 2.6 as they suggested but it does offer 2.5 and it is working fine for me or I should say I have yet to run in to the problem we both had with the newer version 3.0.......

Have you flashed a gingerbread rom? I don't know if it will flash on 2.5 due to edify script...? The biggest issue is 2.5 will NOT back up your wimax rsa keys. You need 2.6.0.1. To be fully compatible with both scripts and to back up wimax. If you ever lose your wimax keys you will be effed unless you retained a back up from 2.6 or higher.

Do yourself a favor and take the extra step to flash ra 2.3 preferably or cw 2.6.0.1

+1 to amon ra 2.3. Also I noticed that amon ra does a much better job at wiping. And +1 on backing up the wimax keys. Make sure that once you switch over to amon ra that you make a nandroid backup and to check off the wimax keys option.

Be sure to tell the new guys that backups are not interchangeable i.e. a Clockwork backup can only be restored with Clockwork and Amon Ra back ups only with Ra. :-)

wow thats some awasome info.... on the same note I have tried to change my recovery to both 2.6 AND amon. I went ahead with 2.5 because I was not getting any more error messages. but I would prefer to have the suggested recovery. Only problem is when I boot into recovery it is 2.5 (this makes since to me cause if i'm using a certain recovery version how can I change that version when its in use) now when i flash the zip of either amon or cm 2.6 it just goes back to my current version or recovery.

Is there some different way of changing your current recovery program I even uninstalled Rom manager but I think as a default when I boot into recovery it defults to my current running version of clookwork........ when I flash the zip of either file amon or 2.6 it always goes back to what my phone is currently running.( which makes since cause how can I change a program when the program I am using is "in use"...........
