I think this is why we arent getting the 2.2 update

We will get 2.2 as an OTA update, just wait. It won't come before the Vibrant 4G is released though, as that would not be good for the new device's sales. I'd say 1-2 months after the release, then they'll give it to the rest of us.

What I'm wondering is, why doesn't the new one come with 2.3? It's along the time frame for that.

Im sure as hell not going to get the Vibrant 4G. I already have 2.2 w/ a custom ROM but it just chaps my ass that they put out a better Vibrant with an updated OS before getting it to us.

Ill wait for the dual core phones to hit the stores.

Not just the same time frame but along the same framework as the Nexus S. Samsung sucks, thank god for Devs

So Samsung has had all this time to essentially re-release the same galaxy S phone and rebrand it the Vibrant 4G (all they did was re-add the front facing camera that they deleted in the Vibrant and add a new HSPA+ chip). Seriously, how long does it take to add HSPA+ chip? (because the FFC slot was supposed to be there from the beginning)

So essentially the same freaking phone and they couldn't update the original Vibrant to 2.2 (when Samsung/Tmobile USA) have had access to Android 2.2 source code since May 2010.

Let's see, Vibrant was released in July 2010; they've had 6 months since it's offiical release PLUS an additional 2 more months to play with 2.2 since Google released it in May 2010.

That's a total of 8 months to update the Vibrant.

Steve Jobs was right about Android. Fragmentation; Samsung is the poster child for what's wrong with Android.

In my opinion, it shouldn't take manufacturers/carriers more than 90 days from release of source code to update their phones to the lastest, especially if it's their flagship phone.

Apple's iPhone 3GS (a phone that's been released over 18 months ago), gets their updates the same day as their current iPhone 4. Same goes for their iPhone 3G, a phone that's been out for 30 months (abeit with reduced features but still updated)

Didn't people say to wait 1-2 months for 2.2 after the Nexus S was released last month? Now Vibrant 4G will probably be released in the next couple of weeks and you want people to wait 1-2 months after the Vibrant 4G's released?

You are now talking about an April 2011 timeframe for a 2.2 update that was promised "sometime in 2010" by Samsung.

While I do think Samsung/Tmobile will eventually release a 2.2 update for the original Vibrant, it will be long in the tooth for a "flagship" phone. People will move on and remember this (like the Behold 2). I am not going to by an Samsung Phone for a very long time because of their lack of software updates/support.

I doubt there's that much of a conspiracy going on. I think Samsung just has a policy where updating phones is a much lower priority than with other manufactures.

It's a business decision they've made. Can't say it's wrong or not. Most people have no idea about updates. They are calculating that the money saved but putting few resources into updates isn't offset by lower sales.

I agree. Samsung is making a business decision by essentially telling the end consumers to shove it after the point of sale. I am the "techy' for a lot of friends and and workers at my place. Before I was excited and would recommend the Epic 4G, Vibrant, Captivate, and Fascinate to all of my co-workers and friends. But it's very hard to explain to those people about Android's fragmentation. They all believe if they get an Android phone, that they would get Adobe Flash support. But I have to explain it to them that Samsung's phones are currently stuck at 2.1 without Flash support. They don't understand the reason. Now I know for a fact 2 of my co-workers won't get the Fascinate and heading straight for the Verizon iPhone next month.

Samsung and or Google need to streamline the update process much better because now that Apple has launch a CMDA iphone (We all now Apple is targeting China's huge CDMA market with this CDMA iphone announcement), Google and their partner manufactures need to get on the ball with proper support.

There's a reason Apple (as much as some people hate them). There's a reason Apple has an outstanding consumer satisfcation records, especially with their iPhones. Of course there are a vocal minority are fine every little thing wrong with their iPhones but for the most part, the iPhone enjoys unparalleled repeat buyers because of Apple's continue support for their phones for at least 2 years on going.

I hope samsung makes a $hit load of new devices and sell about 1/3 of what the galaxy s did. That way they can feel like crap just like us US galaxy buyers. I believe we have been official screwed with 2.2.

I hear a lot of cat-scratching, but I will tell you this. As a huge Android fan-boy, Fragmented or not, it's creating an opportunity for everyone to become somewhat tech savvy. In turn, isn't that helping our development nation? I mean, hell, let's look at Motorola /w Motoblur phones. Do you think their customers are happy at their delay in releasing updates to it's "core" phones? I don't think so. If you wanted a phone to have the latest, most current updates... buy a phone without an over laid UI. Vanilla, TouchWiz, MotoBlue....etc. Go buy a Nexus 1, Nexus S, G2. Those phones will alway's be updated quick-like.

If that option, being somewhat one sided, doesn't suit you. Learn how to install a ROM. If your on a forum board, you are smart enough to install a basic ROM.

Nero V4.1 from TeamWhiskey was just released this week. It's 2.2 and based on the Gingerbread back-end. Hell, they even made a TouchWhiz3.0 version for you cat-scratchers.

yeah I just rooted and installed that on my phone in about 30 minutes. PH*ck Samsung

I'd rather have the Galaxy S than another phone that hard-bricks easily or does not have nearly the level of activity from the independent dev community. This phone works beautifully as a platform for experimentation and modding - to such a degree that I would argue it is even helping to expand the base of users involved in the field, which will result in a more active community for future generations of phones and users.

I am in this club.
I waited and waited for the OTA.
I finally got sick of the phone running slow, esp Gallery locking up every time I wanted to show a pic or video to someone.
Gave myself a crash course on ROMs and now I am happily running Nero and once again am proud to show off my phone.

I got tired of waiting for Samdung to put out 2.2 like they promised us last year and rooted my Vibrant. Got the awesome Nero 4.1 rom from Team Whiskey and all I can say is wow. All I can do is kick myself for not doing this sooner. I mean, I know how great these custom roms can be from my days with the G1, but crap, WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT! This phone flies with this rom!

Hey Samdung, how does it feel to know that some random people on the internet put out a free rom for your phone that is far better than whatever BS you've been promising to give us for over 6 months now?:D
