Root I would like some help selecting a Rom

M0ose

Newbie
I have looked at some of the Roms that are available.

I am new to Android phones and root.

I have s-off and rooted my phone using revolution and have clockwork recovery installed. I also have the super user app.

I got my phone from a friend (He upgraded to Iphone 4S), I do not have sprint service (no account or contract)

I am looking for a Rom that will get rid of the forced sprint applications.

I use WiFi and GPS very often. I do not use 3G or 4G.

Can anyone recommend a Rom and Kernel that will fit my needs?

Thank you
-M0ose

Also if anyone knows of a GPS program that will store maps to the phone or SD card, as I do not have a data plan. I could use that info also.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah mikg 3.0 is a good starting place. also try the freedom kernel as well. i would start out with the aggressive freedom kernel and then work your way down the list.

My friend, your friend did not upgrade, he downgraded...

+1 for mik3.0

But I would change my recovery to amon ra before flashing a new rom... these guys can walk you through it as they did me. You won't regret it.

I second that. Amon RA just seems to make flashing life so much easier ... in my opinion of course. ;)

Also most of the popular roms are going to already have Sprint's bloatware removed or at least give you an option to remove them yourself.

So GPS works with that Rom?

I am ok with changing recovery, but how would I do that? I watched a you tube video to do s-off and root.

Thank you

Yes the gps works well with mik3.0

You need to download the PC36IMG file that's floating around and put it on the root of your sd card, then turn the phone off, turn it back on while holding down the botton volume rocker... This will open hboot. Hboot will scan for the file and ask if you want to update, select yes, then it will ask you if you want to reboot, select no. Then select boot in recovery, then you will see the new recovery.

I got my file out of ocnbrez signature if I'm not mistaken

You should now be in amon ra recovery, and you can flash mik 3.0

I'm still fairly new to all of this. But I would recommend trying MikG 3.0 or Cyanogenmod. Once you've gotten comfortable with those, try out an ICS ROM. They're a bit buggy, but still fun. I wouldn't recommend ICS as a daily driver though. MikG and Cyanogenmod are very reliable and still 2 of my favorites.

And those PC36IMG files are located here:Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire

MOose, You do have alot of options without a contract. Another option for something that is really light for a Rom would be the TommyTomatoe Classic line.

That and MikG 3.0 both run very well and will not have any random reboots or bugs if you wipe properly before flashing.

This thread has ideas on how to use the GPS and Maps without a Data plan.
Free WiFi is everywhere's these days.

You basically want to have WiFi service when you map out your route and then the GPS satellites will get you to where you wanted to be. And since you loaded it up with a WiFi connection it will recalculate your route if you go the wrong way.

Thanks for all the info.

What I want out of GPS is basically for it to be more like a car GPS system. To have all the maps of North America loaded onto it and to not be forced to go to a WiFi area to update where I want to go.

Thanks again

I am not finding an area showing information for mikG 3.0

Can someone give me a link please. I have found the Roms and kernals area but did not find it there.

With my phone I have to remove the battery in order to get to the Hboot area because it will just power on normally otherwise.

However if I select restart, then when it is about to turn on I hold the volume down (not power) and it goes to the Hboot screen.

Dont know if everyone already knows you can do this.

my guess then is that you have either hboot 2.16 or 2.15 as that is a new feature that was introduced with gingerbread. so to get into hboot you will need to turn off fastboot. so go to settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.

I potentially messed up something, still working on it. Will edit this later.

My phone will nly go the boot screen -- nothing else. I still have recovery, but appairantly nothing to recover.

I guess I did not back up properly with Amon RA - I did back up with clockwork, but RA wont load it. Can I get clockwork back?

If you can get into amon ra then you don't need to go back to clockwork. Here's what you need cause it sounds like you don't have a rom installed on your root sd card.

Go into recovery and choose usb toggle mode and conect to your pc. There you should have the downloaded file for mik 3.0 and the appropriate gapps. Move the files to the root of your sd card, not in any subfolder. Then select flash zip from sd card, and find the mik3.0 file and flas it... it will ask you twice, hit your power button for yes. After you flash that go and find your gapps file and flsh that... Then the phone should reboot into the new rom.

Let us know how it worked out.

you do not need to flash gapps with mikg as mikg is a sense rom. gapps is for aosp roms.

make sure that you are wiping correctly as well. make sure that you wipe everything but sd card. sd ext is ok. it will not wipe your card. then flash the rom.

I got it to work. Did what you recommended (before I read your post)

Tried putting it in a folder first, did not work. Then I tried putting it on the main are a of the SD card and got it to work.

I have Mik 3.0 now and am gonna try it out.

Thank you to everyone.

Also, ocnbrze, the Don't Panic smiley helped.

What all do I back up? there are a few items that are already checked and some that are not.

ok i always keep the first three checked. those are the bare minimum that you need to do. but for your first nandroid backup i would keep the first three and also check wimax as well. once the nandroid backup is done, when you get a chance i would back that nandroid backup to the computer and even on the cloud like dropbox. the reason is that there is a very small possibility that you could loose your wimax keys by flashing roms and more so with radios.

please read this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html

now disregard the warnings. the chance of you loosing your wimax is very small like i said. and if you have a nandroid backup with wimax then you are good to go.

if you plan on partitioning your card then you will also need to backup sd ext as well. if not then it is not needed.

I am not sure what I plan to do, I am having fun learning all of this.

I tried to go to the market place, but it said I ahd to log in - already ahve. I assume it is because I do not have the proper Google market information and have to find that somewhere. (I remember reading this somewhere.)

After that I think the next step is to get a Kernel (but that will have to wait for another day)
