Root I would like some help selecting a Rom

Is there a way to change an application (or widget) name and Icon?

Yahoo mail is just called mail. I would Like to change it to Y Mail and put the Yahoo Y as the picture.

Thanks
-M0ose

I recommend this Rom: [ROM] Team Nocturnals Xplod E4G RLS (11/15/2011)

[ROM] Team Nocturnals Xplod E4G RLS (11/15/2011) - xda-developers

With the tiamat 3.3.7sbc kernel found here:

HTC Evo 4G

It takes a while to set it up and get used to it, but battery life is amazing, and its quite stable, maybe a lil slow at times, but stable...

As for gps maps with out data try locus free in the market, just make sure u have some free space on ur mem card, maps can b large...

OK this looks like a perfect thread to jump in on.

I will be getting an evo in a few days I am not inexperienced with android, though not an expert either lol This will be my first htc though I have a few questions, I know the answers are very subjective but if you would give your best guess I can look over all the answers. I currently do not know anything about the evo development.

In your opinion which is the best AOSP up todate rom and kernel, OC undervolt and trickle charge required. My usage is fast lag free fairly minimal yet longish battery life.
I like gingerbread, and when ICS gets stable enough for daily use that will be my goal.
I am not a fan of sense.

Welcome!

Based on your needs, I'd say try Deck's GB with Tiamat kernel (most people still prefer the 3.3.7 sbc, while others say the newest isn't bad either).

i have been running the ICS 4.0.3 from jaredthegreat..... it has a few minor bugs, but the rom works and its speedy.
bugs? video camera not working, screen flashes for a sec when turning it off, No WiMax, and a few apps hang every now and then (words with friends)

otherwise it is working just fine for me, rungs good, i have like 50 apps already in it to put it through its paces..... its currently at 1153Mhz and its stable.

definetly worth a shot to test and see if you like it... otherwise, go CM7 2.3.7 as its the best rom i have used out there

I will be giving it a look, but without video cam its no go for a daily, I have 2 young kids that I always take pics and vid of:D
I have used 2 beta cm7's, one for the optimus an one for the prevail, and loved them both but being betas they had issues I would imagine this one is rock solid so I will be looking into that one as well. Thanks

yea, this ICS is obsously still a work in progress, but its good for Daily Driven for me... i used it back in Dec and went back to CM7 as the camera wasnt working at all.... now that they got regular camera working in just a few weeks, im sure panoramic and video will come soon enough
but yes, CM7.1 is indeed rock solid for me and love it

yes you can use Desktop VisualizeR

you can even use it to change the icons if you like as well as rename it.

I got the app and have seen that I can create a short cut to an app using a different name and picture (this helps) But from what I can see this is just a short cut. In the apps tab it is still listed as it was before.

ahhhh i see what you are asking now. yes that app just create short cuts on your home screen. i'm sure there is a way, but i have no idea on how to do that.

Another question.... Is there a ROM that males the EVO not have Sprint signal. Such as phone signal and data. I only need WiFi and am wondering if havinig those turned off or disabled would increase battery life.

just turn off 3g and as long as your are connected to your wifi you are good to go. you will still be able to make calls and texts. and as long as your on wifi you can even send mms as well.

See my post just above yours :D as for not needing sprint service, just put the phone in airplane mode, then toggle wifi on, and ur good to go... with the rom/kernel I suggested above, u will get excellent battery life... especially on airplane mode with wifi!

I have herd that there are apps that will let me use internet phone service with my evo, even though there is no contract. Is there any free ones? (A game I play wants my phone number to confirm me or I cant play)

yes I think if your on the android use google voice and sipdroid
I seen a post outlining the proccess but I dont recall where it is

It is requiring a mobile phone number (love how it assumes everyone has a mobile phone now)

I assume it will want to send me a text message, is this possible?

last time I looked into it you could specifiy another number.
I know of a more complicated method that works perfectly as well I let me get that instruction for you

Also using google voice you can send txt messages over wifi, 2 weeks ago I tested it and had 2 people receive txts
I was not able to get it configured to receive the texts though, I was only playing around to check it out so I didnt try that hard.

Google voice wants me to set up a phone number of my device.

They gave me a number to use, but also wants the phone number of the android phone (which does not have a phone number)

Any ideas?
