Root ICS for evo4

Lurker
Hey everyone I'm trying to find a stable version of ICS for my evo 4g, i've looked around and i'm unable to actually find one so i figured i would ask the all knowing and godlike androidforum folks. any help would be much appreciated.

also you can always make a nandroid backup and try them all and tell us what you think of them. i would really like to know which one worked for you.

With that said, I am having a HELL of a time getting it to work. It rebooted on me about 5 times on initial boot. I was trying to flash it along with Mason RC3. Then I went stock, still no dice. Then I switched recoveries...same thing. Then I tried it without the baked in .14 FSO kernel and just the regular .14 kernel, still no dice. So I actually just reformatted, repartitioned and set up my partition on EXT4. About to give it a go again. UGH

Ok well I did some lookin around last night and ended up finding MIUI.us 4.0.4-2.5.25 Ice Cream Sandwiched and it flashed flawlessly, created backup, wiped and installed with no issues at all. So far it runs really good, the only bad thing I have to say is the camera is still a work in progress because you can only do 3M and can't use the front facing cam. i tried finding an app that might fix it but I had no luck. So other than that I'm all for it, but it definitely takes some getting used to.

Use ics camera from the market and you'll have the full 8mp

And no ics roms have front facing camera

Ok cool :) thanks for the help, i'm kinda digging the ICS so far. I can definately live without the front facing camera as long as this stay stable. I'm getting addicted to flashing my phones lol this was only my second flash, but i wanna buy a new phone just to flash it

Well one thing for sure with you we don't have to worry about what you didn't do I know you know what your doing so if your having issues then lets see what we can figure out is the problem. It was working with EXT 4 before correct?

1.0 was flawless for me with a2sd and my 2 GB ext3 partition. I tried that, no dice. Even tried a different recovery, three different downloads over wifi, two of which were downloaded to the PC and copied over to my phone. Then I tried repairing my ext. Still no good. I repartitioned with a 1 GB partition, EXT4 and still no good. I have no idea. I guess I will check the md5 again, but I've never had a bad MD5 on any download I've ever had.

Well found a new flaw with the flash :( it doesn't let me set custom ringtones, or atleast it doesn't recognize them because it plays the default ringer which is kinda annoying because its a really stupid ringer

A failing card maybe? try EXT 3 see if there is any difference. if not and the downloads are good then a failing card seems more likely.

yes one of the things I never liked so how you fix this is fairly simple. Goto the /system/media/ringtones folder select all and delete. Now add in your ringtones. do the same for notifications. after you have replaced there's with yours you will want to reboot into recovery wipe cache and dalvic then go and start setting up your ringtones.

Well, I tried it again this morning....repartitioned, EXT4. Same stuff. Bootloop city. Interesting thing I noticed...when it would reboot, it would go through the "android is upgrading" process and it would reboot at that point. I started writing it down...

Rebooted at
4 of 38 apps
20 of 35 apps
2 of 16 apps
9 of 15 apps

Then it fully booted. But I could only use it for a few minutes and I started getting soft reboots. Confusing right? Possible bad SD card?

I boot up the jmztaylor CM9 nightly build with flashable a2sd, and everything works flawless. Deck reloaded works flawlessly. Very, very odd. I checked my card to see if it's inserted properly. I pulled it out and put it back in. It's a PNY 16 GB Class 10 card. Never given me any issues of any kind until now, and even then, it's working on pretty much any other setup.

I have been on the hunt for a stable Android 4.0 ROM for my wife's Sprint HTC EVO 4G lately. I just migrated her to CyanogenMod 7.2 and she does, indeed, love it. The battery life has been tremendous. The available RAM is almost 100 MB higher than her stock HTC Sense 1.0 ROM was.

Anyway, I think I will wait a bit longer before testing out Android 4.0 ROMs on her handset. Reliability is paramount to her, so rebooting or other issues would not work. Reliable camera, video, and 4G is important to her too. I do look forward to reading about the continuing development of stable Android 4.0 ROMs for this handset though.

definitely something crazy going on there. Especially if other things work with no issue. that would pretty much eliminate an SD issue. you've had this installed one time before with out issue so i'm not thinking a bad download. Did you download to computer or phone? could be a freaky transfer but that seems unlikely if it "updated" and then booted up fully.Where did you dl it from? (full link) I want to see what happens with it for me. Also I've only known Since to "Upgrade" but only with user permission to do so. Never known AOSP to run an upgrade either.

There are no ics roms out there that have 4g, and it'll probably be a while before we have any.

Indeed. I am hoping we will see an official Android 4.0 ROM that integrates WiMax someday though. ;)

In a few years it will not matter anyway after WiMax is deprecated. Of course, by then we will have mostly moved onto new handsets that support LTE anyway.

I just got it from the link over on XDA. Only one hosting site. I have downloaded it to my phone twice and to the PC three times. No dice on any build. Even just flashing the ROM only. I originally tried to flash Mason .15 RC3 with it. But I tried 100% stock setup about 10 different times to no avail. I am completely stumped. Basically I gave up. I'm ticked though, because Team DIRT has ran great on my phone and pretty much nobody else is having any issues with it. There was one other guy on XDA who seemed to be having a similar problem to mine. Oh well, there's plenty of ROMs out there I guess.

Oh, and the "upgrade" happens when you reboot and clear cache and dalvik cache. It's an ICS thing, not an HTC OTA.

I finally figured it out. I posted this on XDA, but here's what I did. FIXED!

I PMed him because I couldn't get this thing to boot for the life of me. I had tried everything like you said. I had used 2 different recoveries, I had downloaded no less than 5 times, repartitioned 3 times and I could not get it to be stable. Mazda undervolted the rom by default. My phone HATES undervolting. Quite often, going down even -25 on a gingerbread rom will cause issues for me, so I had never even bothered with undervolting on ICS.

Here is the fix (note, I did all of this on my phone)

1) Unzip the rom zip file. I used root explorer to do this.
2) Find where it was extracted, go into /system/etc/init.d and DELETE 74havsvoltages
3) Use the multiselect tool in root explorer to reselect the extracted files/folders. The list should be

boot.img
check_data_app
/data
META-INF
move_cache_sd
/system

After you've selected each one, one of your options should be "zip". Zip that bad boy up.

Flash in recovery after wiping properly and you're done.

Booted up with NO ISSUES FINALLY. WOOHOO!

Again a huge thanks for Mazda to helping me out with this one. I clearly have one of the pickiest Evo's that was ever made.

The "upgrading" happens in every ics Rom I've tried on the first boot as well as after wiping dalvik cache and cache. It's not an actual Rom upgrade but something to do with how the apps are run and accessed. Probably zipaligning them or moving them to the card.

Edit:
Crap, forgot tapatalk opens you to the last unread post and not the current topic. I see this has already been addressed.

Your EVO must've been an only child, it has to have it its way :p
