If Sprint released the Evo3D and SGS2 and Photon on the same day which would you pick?

Which phone if all 3 on the same day ?

So - should I change the thread name to include one of the new Motos?

No sarcasm, sincere question - let me know your thoughts! :)

I say yes, for sure. If it's going to compete with the EVO 3D, I'd really like to hear anybody's feedback on the comparisons.

From my take, only having had an Android phone since the EVO release, it seems like HTC & Motorola have great phone support as compared to Samsung, which is part of the reason that the SGS 2 would be 3rd runner up for me, as far as upgrade selection is concerned.

Like I stated before, EVO 3D is going to have alot of competition this year. I'm not really into Moto phones but this thing looks like it's going to be a beast. Plus this has a kickstand for crying out loud!

Lets not derail this thread... but is the Photon being released June 8th? Or announced June 8th?

Announced June 9, but being projected for a July release. So it's not being projected for the same day release, but the main topic of the thread is if the SGS 2 or the EVO 3D is released on the same day, which would you pick.

Right now, I'm saying neither because I'd pick Motorola Photon 4G. Hopefully, Early Mon adds that because I think it's just as fair a comparison.

That's good news for the Evo3D. That means (probably):

June - Evo3D
July - Photon
August - SGSII

Hopefully...

Yeah, seems very logical now. Even though I was kinda skeptical that they'd have such a huge event, prior to an EVO3D launch on June 3, but some people have made some really good points about that, that actually would make it tremendously advantageous.

Only drawback I can see with that is, if the EVO 3D launches on 6/3, then they hear more official specifics announced by Sprint on 6/9, there might be some early returns for people that would prefer waiting for the Motorola phone, under the 30 day return policy. And those that did return the EVO 3D, can have their upgrade date reset back to the original date of eligibility.

You could say the same thing about the Nexus S 4G. However that phone seems to be doing really well in light of the Evo3D announcement and imminent release.

Just do a staggered release.

SPECULATION:
Evo3D - June 4th
Photon - July 5th
SGSII - August 6th

Something like that... :o... It would prevent returns, or at least some of them.

But the Nexus S was announced way before the EVO 3D was announced. And the Nexus S was released, after the EVO 3D specs were announced, so if people really wanted the EVO 3D, they could've waited just based on the official specs alone.

In the case of the Photon 4G, the full specs aren't announced and everything that's been talked about is merely rumor. If there are people that pick up the EVO 3D anywhere from June 3-June 8, but then they see talks about the Photon 4G w/ "official" specs on the 9th that suit them better, they could easily return the phone right away and wait for the Photon 4G.

Well IF the Photon specs are the same as the Droid X2...
my list would go like this:

1. SGSII
2. Photon
3. Evo3D

One being the phone I would choose first and three being the phone I would choose last.

First of all when youre testing out a phone, its best to NOT use one thats been ran through the motions all day in a store. Especially when you have a store like AT&T with a company that has double the users as Sprint and there couldve easily been three times the number of people using the in store atrix than the nexus. My brother has an Atrix and its not laggy whatsoever. I dont like motoblur but the phone definitely isnt laggy.

Assuming that is the only Atrix I've ever laid hands on. Assuming is rarely a good thing.

The Atrix is sluggish, and not especially responsive for being a dual core which people keep touting as the greatest thing since the Ewok. This is typical of android however, where 80% of devices feel sluggish compared to iOS, WebOS and WP7, irrespective of the hardware.

Only a handful of Android devices don't feel like sluggish. Feel is obviously subjective, but the Nexus S for me is the first Android phone that exhibits a highly polished, smooth and responsive user experience.

You don't have to take my word for it though. Try both; side by side if possible where the differences stand out prominently. The Atrix just feels like crap in comparison.

Wow after all this bitching about moto's encrypted bootloader there are still some who pass up the Evo for the exact same.specs and the Tegra 2 which has been out for what 8 months? Does anyone else find this weird? They both have 4.3 inch screen, qHD, etc, what is so enticing about the photon??? Did I miss something?

I might be mistaken, but it might be due to Motorola's comment previously that they are also looking into the locked down situation. If the Photon is released unlocked, it might be the answer some people were looking for in regards to their next phone.

Still... even if Motorola unlocked it which still isn't for certain what makes the Photon worth getting a boner over? Why would someone choose it over the E3D?

From what it looks like its a bigger Atrix with an older processor and an encrypted bootloader.

I'll take a step further. Motorola has yet to make a phone I would ever consider buying. They sell their dreck Droid line on Verizon, and I hope it stays there because those phones are awful.

The Atrix is laughably bad.

Given their track record, which has lasted years, I have no faith or reason to believe they are suddenly going to conjure up some blockbuster for Sprint.

I'd love to be wrong because more viable options is always a good thing, but I will remain skeptical until the June 9th announcement, and even then, I would probably pass and get the E3D instead.

Like I said though, I'd love to be wrong.

I'm curious about the Photon, but I would almost be willing to bet money that it will basically be a repackaged Atrix.

Meaning a subpar Pentile-based display, locked down device, and I would not be surprised if it shows up with 2.2 and only has 512 mb ram.

The DroidX2 is launching with 2.2. and only has 512 mb ram, just to give an example.

Both the EVO3D and GS2 will likely be significantly better devices, but who knows? I could be wrong and perhaps Moto might surprise us.

Hey who changed the title of my thread ? Arrgggggggggggg I've been hijacked.

Oh - that was me. I asked here publicly if that was ok, got a yes, waited 6+ hours without a no and made it happen.

Thread was already getting hijacked and would've caused 2 threads, your orig and a Photon one - and that would've led to an SGS2 vs. Photon thread here in the 3vo forum and my dog wouldn't have liked that at all (he reads most of the threads here, too, and is sometimes very picky).

Look at it this way - you're a far-sighted seer and you meant for this to happen all along! ;) :)

Let me know if that doesn't square it for you.

I don't really care; I find the comments on photon amusing given that we don't even know if it is based off the atrix, driod x2 or some other moto platform. At least with the sg2 is readily available (though in all likeliness american providers will want some customization to make it 'different').

Anyways nothing interesting seems to be happening these days...

You're talking as if HTC phones have been flawless though. Whether you agree that Moto phones dont have the same "wow" as HTC phones, there's no way on earth you can deny the fact that they have better build quality. From the tearing screens to the light leakage to the cracked top by the power button to the htc letters falling off the phone to the dust under the screen, they BOTH have negatives.

Basically its all about preference. Just as im sure many here prefer HTC I can guarantee you there are just as many that would take one of the Moto Droids over it. If this photon or the SGS II come out with unencrypted bootloaders and the 3D doesnt, its not even a tough decision for me. Especially considering the battery life has been relatively putrid without the ability to use a custom kernel.

So to recap... pros of the SGS2 (relative to Evo3D)

-Higher batt life (this is news to me and a huge draw)
-thinner and lighter than Evo 3D (also cool)
-no AES signed bootloader

Cons:
Samsung updates? Incidentally, why is it that development is so slow on Samsung devices? I only know in terms of the Moment but Haxsung devs (last I checked) were still piddling around w/ Froyo while we Hero users have had Gingerbread for some time, ironically off a 'Samsung' Intercept port (if I'm not mistaken). I remember reading once something about Samsung not being transparent w/ their devices in terms of a full release of code (is that the jist? can one of you explain; more so if this will pertain to the SGS2?)
-possible GPS or other Radio issues? Is this based off anything meaningful other than past phone mishaps.

What else am I missing?

Can anyone confirm whether Tegra 2 is going in both devices and whether both have mini HDMI? I could personally do w/o Tegra 2, as it's handicapped (confirmed my nvidia) for my intended use which is stutter free playback of native high profile h.264, which is why I got the missus an iPad instead of a Xoom. It would be kind of bad ass to carry around 720p rips on a smartphone.

In a weird way, I'm kinda hoping that HTC borks the bootloader. They would make my decision (and I would imagine many others) very, very easy.

-Higher Internal Memory
-Larger reserved space for Applications
-8MP Camera
-Super AMOLED Plus Display
-Mali 400MP GPU (In my opinion, I believe this will be a faster GPU.)
-2MP Forward Facing Camera
-1.2ghz Dual-Core Cortex-A9 (Shown in multiple benchmarks to be faster.)

I'm not trying to say one is better than another, but if we're listing technical specifications that are higher or have been proven to be faster. That would be the whole list.

Either phone is more phone than any of us realistically need. I just want the facts to be available for people to make the proper decision.

Good list, I'm compiling all of it! Larger space for /data partition is important as the Hero and Firerat mod taught me. I jive w/ Super AMOLED as only a subjective pro as imo, AMOLED never became the knight in shining armor that Samsung wanted to be. that being said, i prefer blue hue over red. Digging the cortex and 2mp front facing (what is front facing mp on 3Do?) Bonus if that GPU can shine w/ high profile 1080p/720p h.264 where Tegra 2 flops.

EDIT: YES! I'm finding hints from various sources that the SGS2 gpu has been optimized for HP h.264. This is fantastic news!

I think I've come full circle since the bootloader news. :/ I hated Samsung before, but through forum therapy, I've come full circle! Kamsahamnida Samsung! lol :)
