Root I'm so fed up

I have tried every possible combination of work arounds, changes, system settings and the like ot get unrevoked to work with my phone to no avail, I always get phone communication unexpectedly interupted. I just want to root this dang thing, what are the other methods available to do this, I got this phone specifically so i can run CM7 on it. Please any help is appreciated.

Rooting my Eris and rooting the Dinc was like night and day. I'm not yet to familiar with clockwork to help but someone will chime in and get you up and running.

So you loaded the driver that came in the Unrevoked bundle according to the provided instructions right?

If so, any chance you have HTC Sync installed on your computer? If so, delete it, then retry. Some of the earlier rooters also suspected problems with PDAnet being installed on the PC although I'm not sure if that was ever fully validated.

You could also try a different SD card if that's possible or moving off the contents of the current card to the PC and formatting to FAT32 via the PC...a good idea for a soon to be rooted phone anyway. Then restore contents and give it another shot.

If ALL else fails, try a different PC or better yet a Mac.

I rooted from the sticky at the top of this forum. Rooting the eris I think was actually harder than rooting the Inc. If you read the instructions carefully you should be able to root without a problem.

Different phones, you really HAVE tried everything! J/k I know what you meant and understand your frustration. Have you gone into device manager and checked for recognition after the driver install? Can you connect to the PC in disk drive mode and explore the SD contents? Only other thing I can come up with considering what you've tried is a bad USB cable. Seems like the only thing that might be common to all scenarios.

i actually had a cable one time that would charge the phone(tho real sloooooooooow) and seem fine,but if i tried to use it for data transfer would ultimately cause windows explorer to crash

im betting that youve got a bad cable,or for some other reason, your phone is not consistently being seen by unrevoked.

what was the answer for having htc sync currently installed on the rooting computer?

no htc sync, tried 3 different sd cards, installed the driver, un installed reinstalled, removed anything that could possibly affect the rooting process. Windows 7 kept trying to auto download drivers I turned it off and I finally got it to hang at phone settling, so now I will try it one more time, with a different sd card and a different usb, which this will be the 3rd combination, I seriously cant figure out why this is so complicated, I've tried with linux it wouldnt recognize my phone, I went through all the steps for that too. If this doesnt work I have to try to find someone with a Mac to do it for me.

You have to look at it both in hboot and in normal operating mode - both screenshots for your Windows version must match what you see. IIRC I had to install the drivers both ways too in order to get it right. It's a bit fuzzy now, but I remember that was the hardest part.

Also, what operating system are you using on the desktop? That might help people to advise you better.

windows 7 home premium, on a dell n5010, 64 bit, got it to restart and hang at waiting for phone to reboot, again, after 10 minutes I pulled it off the usb, this was after I had uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them, everything looked like the screen shots except for after I installed the HBOOT drivers it recognized my phone as ABD interface not android phone, as it showed in the screen shots, I tried to run unrevoked again, it hung up then said communications unexpectedly...yada yada, so im at a lost, hopefully somebody has been through this or seen this and knows how to deal.

Do you or have you tried a XP machine. Windows 7 (specifically 64 bit systems) have given plenty of people problems.

Have you tried using a different computer to do it with?
Seriously, because if your USB is being interrupted, it may have nothing to do with the phone. Do you have another computer you could try it on, or know someone who would let you borrow theirs?

I have ran unrevoked as an administrator, I bought the phone off ebay, that wouldnt root, i ended up needing a insurance replacement, that didnt root, then I had to replace the replacement, that is what I currently have and that will not root as well. I dont know how to tell if its slcd or amoled, how can I tell? I dont have access to another computer right now, if I did it would be another windows 7 64 bit, I couldnt even get the linux cd to boot on my computer, it has to be something with the computer but it rooted my friends evo like a snap...

If it's failed to root 3 Incredibles, it's clearly related to either that machine or possibly still the USB cable. Do you have any of the following installed on your PC:

1.) HTC Sync
2.) Doubletwist
3.) PDA net
4.) Any other software that you've used to interface your Incredible to your PC via USB connection

If you have anything installed on the PC that fits into the above list, delete the program and retry rooting with Unrevoked.

Some people have also been successful with z4root to gain temporary root, then get superuser from the market. Then use rom manager to flash clockwork. Then you can flash s-off.

Yeah... in theory, I've only seen a couple people attempt to do it that way, but it worked.

having unrevokeds forever s-off patch will let you stay rooted permanently. more info here if you havent seen this page: public:forever [RootWiki]

for sh*ts and giggles not too long ago,i ran the back to stock PG31IMG file and unrooted my phone. true to their word,i remained s-off. i then flashed Amon recovery(personal preference over clockwork-you could do either) and was running an unrooted,stock rom with a custom recovery. i made and restored a couple backups of the stock,unrooted rom just to see if i could. i i then flashed cm7 overtop of it,and voila,i was back where i started from in the experiment

i then restored the unrotoed stock rom,and flashed the superuser app in recovery(from here: [APP] Superuser 2.3.6.1 - Now on the Market [2010-09-05] - xda-developers ) to see if it would work and rebooted to a rooted,stock rom. downloaded and ran set cpu and a couple others to make sure i was really rooted.

the main reason i did all this was to make sure when the GB ota hits ill be able to install a stock recovery and accept it with the confidecence that ill be able to flash a recovery and still remain rooted afterword. 2.2 and 2.3 are different,so its possible that flashing the superuser app to root the OTA will fail,but at least ill be able to back up that stock rom and go back to cm7.

now wether z4root will work,and let you install clockwork,superuser,etc. i cant say... but i do know for a fact that if you run the s-off tool you wont have to ever be unrooted again

EDIT: im about to try it. as soon as my is charged enuff to put it back to stock rom and recovery,im going to try it for you.

so i tried this and yes,it was that easy.

i unrooted my phone,and checked for software updates,just to make sure.

i then moved the z4root app,and the superuser app that i linked above to the sd card.

-i ran z4root and obtained temporary root. (superuser app appeared automagically,i didnt have to download it)
-i downloaded rom manager from the market.
-i made sure "erase recovery" was checked in rom manager settings,then cleared download cache
-i flashed clockwork recovery and booted into it. at this point,you could do alot of things:1) you could flash the superuser app i linked if you wished to continue on a rooted stock rom. 2) you could also flash the custom rom of your choice. 3) i guess you could also do nothing,if you dont care about being rooted wichever of those things you do,you definately should flash unrevokeds forever tool(im allready s-off,so i didnt.otherwise i would have to make sure it works.if you really want me to,ill turn s-on and redo the whole process)

what i did was reboot to make sure temp root was gone... it was. rom manager wouldnt let me boot back to recovery,and set cpu couldnt get root access. superuser app was still there,but not doing anything. so i powerd off,powered on into hboot(power+volume down),selected recovery and there was clockwork 3.0.0.8. this time i flashed the SU app and rebooted. root access restored. yay! rebooted one more time to make sure it "stuck"

so to the OP,if you havent done this allready,quit stressing out about unrevoked and just do this. its maybe not the typical method,but it worked.

now im flashing Amons recovery back so i can restore my cm7 backup.
